What's really said is that the costuming in the is music video from the late 90s has better costuming then most period pieces of it's time. Hell some period pieces today would measure up.

Its funny you said that cos I was thinking the same thing....but another thing i thought of they used certain artists music like britney spears and Madonna song and it sound amazing for that time period so they could use this and she is a British artists as well.

I find the reverse ‘cultural appropriation’ so fantastic, it’s like black artists taking 17th century baroque (an era of enslavement and colonisation) and sticking a middle figure up at it by bringing so much more edge and sass! Have always loved this time for RnB

I meaaaan there were the odd Black Aristocrats of that era too (of a darker hue or white passing). It just wasn't as widely documented. It doesn't serve the narrative if there's depictions of those being "enslaved" as wealthy or affluent. So I don't really know if it counts as "reverse cultural appropriation" when we were more than just slaves in parts of the world (tends to cause uprising, y'know?). But I do agree that it's edgy and genuinely a VIBE seeing these kind of visuals created
@finleyshaw75332 жыл бұрын
Well it is still cultural appropriation by that logic. Because it is a person of colour copying causation culture. Cultural appropriation is stupid because it implies that wearing clothes from other cultures is offensive when most peoples do not care

I remember watching this on KZbin and the quality was crystal clear but not now. Jamelia is brilliant and the choreography sublime yet this video seems to have been subjugated because of its content - black people being as civilised as white people in an age of enslavement - and possibly suppressed because of its political sentiments. Interesting yet as KZbin, bought by Google, doesn't even recognise the artist's name and gives the red squiggle to call her a mistake. Music and dance and lyrics brilliant ; the treatment of the artist and her music despicable , probably racist, suspect to say the least and very unfair.

It's just a damn video concept. Don't get yourself pressed about an old music video from nearly 2 decades ago. People are overreacting these days. Black culture has been used by white media and companies to profit from for decades.

It’s actually Ethiopian dress 👗 that the brits copied and those dresses big circumference lower parts were inspired and based on a original African dress as well. Classical was taught to Europeans by the same African moors who’s ancestors are the same as those dancing in this video. As for the language that was forced on them by the British. Not appropriated by them in any way.
