Al, I'm one of many many people who lost power thanks to Hurricane Helene. It's too hot to sleep, so I'm sitting in my car, charging my phone. I treated myself to a little computer time (even though I'm trying to save all kinds of power) and you popped up! Lots of scary things in your podcast tonight, but a relief for a minute from my personal problems. Of course, America's problems are my problems as well. Thanks anyway. Fascinating discussion with Mr. Buie.

Thank goodness for each of the doctors I’ve needed when I lived in England and have had for several years here in USA. The only doctors that act like true doctors are those who are Immigrants. They actually LISTEN to my needs; they ask relevant questions and they read my medical history. These medical professionals are empathetic and respectful. They are not afraid to actually examine my body and see where the actual pain or discomfort is coming from. They follow the Hippocratic oath. It is an Oath of Ethics sworn by every medical Practitioner. I believe most American doctors have forgotten what it means to have received a medical certificate and sworn an Oath. Most doctors act like they’re doing us a favor by treating us. Most doctors refuse to answer legitimate questions about our healthcare and the drugs they are injecting into our bodies with disastrous consequences. Ironically having lived in Europe and South America and knowing people from Africa and the Philippines…they presume that doctors in USA are tops… that their treatment is outstanding. When they actually see how we are treated they are dumbfounded, they are so disappointed that the American medical community over all is walking into an area full of ‘land mines’ as you enter you are holding your breath and praying to get to your destination without getting killed. I am not speaking only hearsay…I have lived it. Members of my close family young and elderly have died from neglect and misdiagnosis. It is very frightening. A sad statement. I feel blessed that finally I have found an Immigrant Specialist who is willing to help me. It is early days, yet I am hopeful! My pain is constant and as high as it can be without being hospitalized. The meds is useless…so once again I have another consultation in a couple of days. My body cannot handle much more. Ironically if an animal suffers greatly it will be gently given a dose and quietly without suffering it will pass away. But a human being who has been in extreme pain for 7 years is given one procedure or another… is injected with steroids, ketamine and who knows what else… one becomes a Guinea pig…each ‘specialist’ seeing how he can charge what knowing he’s/she’s not going to help because they’re not bothering to study the whole case. We are a bother. I finally asked my GP a few months ago, when…at what point in our experience are we treated as obsolete and ignored?! He was dumbfounded that I asked such a thing. I share my story in the hope there are Medical Practitioners that still care about a patient. And that this practitioner will find it in his/her heart to take 5 minutes to listen and actually try assisting. All we each need is a quality of care and life so we can feel we are valued and that we matter and that we have a purpose! Thank you.

It can't be stressed enough that the public needs clear and concise explanations of how tariffs work and who pays what because trump has told millions of people that foreign countries will be paying the U.S. government money for imposing such tariffs. He tells them we will be taxing foreign countries which is so blatantly false and misleading. People are buying what he says because they have no idea what tariffs are or why sometimes they are good for U.S. businesses to compete in the market but not for raising revenue for the government.

Instead of running on universal healthcare - which would have passed if Roosevelt had survived to the end of WWII - we should stress universal citizenship education. I don't remember having a class called civics when I went through junior high and high school in the 1970s. There was Model UN as an afterschool program, but that shows you how screwed up the UN is - it doesn't tell you how america works politically. The rumor mill was constantly saying, "Your vote doesn't count" when I was growing up. Nothing was effectively counteracting that, and no one was trying to track down where that nonsense was coming from. No one is informed that Congress is written into the US Constitution to be hobbled and slow by white, landed gentry, who didn't mind viewing human beings as cattle/rabble/unruly mobs or owning them as slaves. I found that out after graduating high school - that should have been in my junior high texts. I had a class in high school called Buying a House. We should have had one for running for congress and passing a bill. Instead, I learned the bill part as a Saturday morning cartoon - along with reminding me about conjunctions. If the species is smart enough to learn about bills being in committee by musical animation, then we should be able to follow how the rest of the government works in a teacher led class. But both parties want to keep that a mystery apparently so we as "citizens" don't worry our pretty little heads about it. 🙄

on tariffs the important part was never mentioned .. so if the 'typical' family pays an extra $4000/year .. where exactly does the money go ?? does it make its way into the US treasury ? and then who decides how and where does it get spent .. ? only telling us that it is bad and leaving out the other 'detail' doesn't make it an explanation .. we expect more from this analysis ..

Maine and Nebraska both split their electors in the same fashion. The Nebraska Politician that said NO was once a Democrat, switched parties but has ambitions to run as Mayor of Omaha, a very blue city. He would get crushed if he voted to change how the electors are allocated. The Republicans tried to pull a fast one. They waited to try to do this after Maine would be able to do the same thing. (Maine has a 90 day delay on any law changes). I think in its next session Maine needs to change how they allocate electors to neutralize what the Republicans in Nebraska will eventually do in regards to changing how they allocate their electors. This will prevent this drama in the future.

I was in total agreement with everything Jamal said until he spoke about “time” as an additional consideration He states if one party wins in successive elections “that should count”. ( it feels like he’s implying that they have a mandate because they won several elections cycles in a row). The fallacy of his argument is two fold. Currently there is extreme gerrymandering of districts in predominantly conservative controlled states. Where in some instances even though a state’s population is roughly 50/50 Republicans/Democrats because of gerrymandering the Republicans get more than 60% of the the house seats. The other fallacy of his argument is the Senate is undemocratic. Montana with roughly 1.1 million people gets two senators. California with roughly 39.5 million people gets two senators. A persons vote for senator in Montana counts roughly 39.5 times more than a persons vote for Senator in California. So in both the House and the Senate the election of members of Congress is skewed towards Republicans. Jamal is an intelligent man. He needs to reconsider this assumption. Maybe his next article?

It's politically self-defeating to give money to lower/middle income folks because it causes inflation. They quickly forget the benefits (more money) but remember the pain (higher prices), even if the benefits are greater than the pain. Giving money to the rich is politically brilliant because they use the extra money to buy assets. The stock market goes up, voters are happy, and upper income voters remember their benefactors.
