Love James Arness. He was so good in his acting, and did provide many enjoyable episodes. He did have tragic occurances in his life, regarding marriage and children, don't we all? God did grant him a very good second marriage, a marriage that he said was "the best part of his life." Glad that he had that. I was sorry to hear that he passed, but that is what awaits all of us. There's denying level of professionalism by the cast and crew of the show. 👍👌

You're not alone. I, and some of the others on our discussion forum also only just discovered (or re-discovered) the show in the last few years. Trust me when I tell you, the episodes are even better when you see them complete. All of the channels that currently show them edit out quite a bit, and INSP even refuses to show some episodes atall, due to subject matter. You can view all 635 episodes, clear and uncut on our forum, JamesArness.Proboards.Com (it's free and easy to join).

Ken doesn't disguise his voice here like he had to as Festus.
@calvinhandley23733 жыл бұрын
He was disguising his voice in a different way here compared to Gunsmoke. Ken was an accomplished singer before he turned to character acting. He appeared on Gunsmoke in a number of different roles, some good guys, and some bad guys, and he threw different voice styles at all of those characters. In the color episodes (Season 12 and later) Ken Curtis added more "hillbilly" to the character, both in his behavior and vocal inflections. In the B&W episodes Festus was less bumbling, and a little bit is a schemer. This shift seems to have started after Dennis Weaver left the series for good. To me it seems like the writers sort of combined some of Chester's qualities with those of Festus.

And that cheap producer, John Mantley would not pay Curtis what he was worth to reprise his role to play Festus in Return to Dodge.
@OhShaw Жыл бұрын
While Mantley was cheap, Curtis wanted more than Amanda Blake was getting. It's also too bad they didn't bring back Dennis Weaver and/or Burt Reynolds, both of whom showed real interest. In fact, Burt would have done it for practically nothing.
@jameshoran8 Жыл бұрын
@@OhShaw It would have been great to have Quint, Chester and Festus in the story, but the plot would have made it difficult. I believe there was only one episode where all three were in it. Burt would have been great and did the intro to Arness's book.
@OhShaw Жыл бұрын
@@jameshoran8 That sure would have been a treat for fans to have ALL the guys back. A good writer could have come up with a story to mskr that happen, but as it was, Mantley went for money-saving flashbacks, and was bothered that a script had been unofficially approved by Blake and Arness before he had been consulted, so he had it re-written. Besides wanting more money, Mantley's re-write was the other reason Curtis turned it down.
