James wrote this when they found out his father had stage 4 kidney disease and no donor could be found. After releasing this song, thousands of people responded by offering their own. Later they found a distant cousin who was compatible and he had the surgery and is doing ok now.. During the recording everyone in there was crying. Only his father was calm asking why is everyone crying? I'm still here. All proceeds from the song went to charity for returned injured soldiers. James and his father were in the army. Yes it is his real father

James really did "chase the monsters away" when this song was released, Someone in Australia heard it and they were a distant cousin who came forward to get tested and was a match! So this song saved his dad's life...how amazing is that?

'I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye' is what they'd say before they were deployed - James was a Captain, his dad A Colonel

Charles Blount was a kidney donor in the past but was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. This was a tribute to him and was done in a single take. His father asked why is everyone crying? I’m still here. He was the only one not crying. After the video a distant cousin also named Charles Blount was found to be a match and donated a kidney.

Something that gets less focus for this song is that it isn't just about death and dying, it is about reaching a stage of life when you have become a caretaker for a parent, so the roles are now reveresed.

You will be glad to know this song saved his dad's life, who is on the video. A distant relative saw this and donated a kidney to his dad who was in stage 4 renal failure. This was done in one take and James refused to let them clean the track up so you get all the emotion. His father was a career soldier and James also served active tours of duty before becoming a singer. He said his father was always his hero. The whole crew was in tears during this which made his dad somewhat uncomfortable saying to James in the car " whats all that crying about I'm not dead yet". With typical soldiers black humour James apparently replied never mind dad if you do die I'm sure the song will make millions. James donated profits from this to health charities.

I appreciate your honesty reaction. Yes that is James Blunts father. At the time he was dying of kidney this was the first time his father heard the song but thanks for the song a relative was a match for a kidney transplant and saved his father.

He always express his emotion very well in his songs, in Goodbye my lover you could feel the saddest, but here is much more, and singing and recording this video at that time his father was sick, and was going to die if they didn't find a kidney, thank God they found it, I am marvel by the strength that James need to do this, and I am still marvel by the fact that his dad (first time he here the song), wasn't crying like a baby, what a beautiful tribute from his son to him..

His dad was dying but got a transplant. You should watch Dean Lewis's How Do I Say Goodbye, that's a tear jerker as well.

PARDON this is James Blunts NATURAL voice, what's he supposed to do, change his NATURAL voice to the same as Mr Tongi? who was using this true story to gain sympathy for himself and be noticed, a lot of research was put into this song by Mr Tongi for the most reaction, which is what happened, Mr Tongi wouldn't have got past the first audition without this song, his voice is just mediocre the same as thousands of others Americans love a sob story, which I take it you 2 are. James WROTE this beautiful song with his sister when they found out their father was DYING, the emotion is 3000% real, have you 2 tried to sing a self written song with your dying father sitting beside you and trying not to cry? and all you 2 could winge about was his high voice, you 2 need to look at yourselves before criticising others thats 4000%. My god what idiots you 2 are. Oh yes just another little bit of information, James Blunt gave all the profit from this song to charities of his choice, British veterans and kidney research. I wonder what your Mr Tongi will do with his? PRATS 🥵 Oh dear forgot to say, James and his DYING father were both high ranking in the British armed forces, James a tank Captain and his father a Colonel. James also saw action in Kosovo, his worse high voice and all....

This isn't another "version", this is his own song that he wrote when he was saying goodbye to his dying father. His father had stage 4 kidney cancer at the time. There was little hope. Happily, he found a kidney donor, --a distant cousin, so his father is now doing better. The emotion you see is real so the delivery wasn't perfect, you're right --that's the way he wanted it.

It’s okay man you’re allowed to cry. This made millions all over world cry! “Ok what is going on right now?!?”😅 Thats called emotion/tears! Let em flow, be vulnerable! That will only help the channel! Saw you wipe a few tears though that’s a good start at least 🫡😏🫡. It’s an emotional masterpiece of a song! Video def made it sadder. We gotta to a point where men don’t have to say “I’m okay admitting it. I get choked up.” Dope reaction overall homie. -early 40s man who is best boys with my early 70s pops + father of 2 with 10/7 year old girls who cried his eyes out to this video 🥹
