For me, the "I'm not your son, you're not my father" means simply that they are now equals. They are loving each other and saying goodbye as equals.

Honestly what he meant by I'm not your son you're not my father were just two grown men saying good bye. It's a mental pep quote to himself and his dad to stay strong with leaving eachother behind. "Don't look at this as you're losing me or I'm losing you. Were grown men. Let this be a part of life and carry on to live your life while you're still here".

James Blunt's father Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease.Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father" His father got a transplant and is doing well. 😀 Greetings from Norway.

Bro, I’m so glad you chose to record and react to this one. This was sooo good. This is a heavy song and really amazing. It’s also crazy that nearly the entire song was a single still shot that really only panned out for yet another single still with his dad. Yet, it was incredibly engaging, mainly because of the quality of the vocals and lyrics. Shared on FB.

I loved the phrase that we are just "2 grown men saying goodbye". You know that we are all at that point with our parents where we know we are both just human & make mistakes-it's a time that we realize that our parents are just as human as we are.

Just watched you for the first time and as some who lost my dad at 13 and didn´t get a chance to say good bye, I was balling like seeing a puppy get hit by a car. Background on the song to wrap it up for you....Blunt and his dad, and the man in the video IS his actual dad, are both from England and military veterans. The dad was career military and James also served, I don know for how long or where, sorry. As someone who had a British dad, the stereo-type of being all buttoned up and never show emotions is true, and in this video, Blunt is trying for the stiff upper lip, but we saw what happened. His dad had been suffering from Stage 4 chronic kidney disease and James wasn.t a transplant match so AT THE TIME of this video, his dad WAS in the last months of his life. BUT...Thanks to this video saying goodbye while he could, trying to not get mushy, a distant cousin saw this video and contacted them and it turns out that guy WAS a match, donated his kidney and James'father is doing well! Honestly, if I did not know the story, I would have tried to donate my own kidney! I watch this often to remind me to tell the people in my life that I love them or youŕe being a dick, whatever so no one will have to wonder. If you want to watch a more uplifting song by James Blunt, check out ¨The Greatest¨, you will like it, especially after this year.

"I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye" is him talking to his dying dad man to man. I had to look this up as well, and apparently it's common for men especially to interact with their terminal fathers in this way, they are taking the "im your child out of it" and speaking with them as an equal, and this could also be to comfort his dad, as if to say "I'm a man now, i will take care of everything, you can go peacefully and don't have to worry about me." That's how i interpret it.

His father was dying of kidney failure. There was very little hope. It is his real father in teh video, and that is raw emotion. This was his goodbye song. Luckily a distant relative saw this video, got tested and was matched, so donated a kidney to James' father.

It's a song for his dad; his dad was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney cancer. However, he's had a transplant & is, last I heard, doing well. This was the first song for & first time he sang to, his dad. He's telling his dad, "now it's my turn to take care of you".....James is going to continue to his dad's legacy & take care of anything. Thanks for recognizing g it.

Charles Blount his father was slowly dying of stage 4 kidney failure, he needed a donor kidney to survive, you can't just get a kidney in a supermarket, James and his siblings were tested but weren't a match, Charles Blaunt was on the NHS waiting list but his blood group wasn't a common one, so really no hope, as you realise someone has to die first. James wrote this song because he thought there was no hope, hence the raw emotion. A distant cousin, found out about it, was tested and a match so a man donated one of his kidneys, a live donor. Both the operations were performed and his father is still alive....

@@jennywren7822 yeah my comment looking back at it doesn't say what I wanted it to say. I meant that James Blunt wrote this for his Dad, who then got surgery and made it through. This was written before his Dad had surgery, but I should've specified a time period. I have a habit of missing out words that I should probably add in, I'll start a sentence and start saying the end before the middle, I do it all the time. Sorry for the miscommunication.

I interpret the "I'm not your son, you're not my father" line to mean that it's too painful to acknowledge the father/son relationship as the father is passing away, so it's easier to digest if they're just "two grown men saying goodbye".

His dad ,man sitting beside him had stage 4 kidney disease, the doctors didn't think he might survive, so james wrote this as a eulogy for his father, thankfully after this song was released a donor was found and his father is in good health, both james and his father were military officers, so both did not show emotion to each other publicly, but as father and son very close, also james prevented the a war starting with Russia and the allies during the Balkans conflict,he refused to shoot Russian personnel at an airport, they weren't heavily armed ,james reported that it would be murder, he ordered his men not to shoot, this video was the first time his dad heard the song, ,james emotional reaction is real, everyone except his dad was in tears, his dad joked about it, also the record company want to use auto tune but Jame's refusal was final, all proceeds for this song went to the British kidney foundation, there is another must see song you have to see it's called no bravery kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZmXYoqumt9shqc

I'm still here" James and his father were both ex British military and us Brits are famed for our stiff upper lip and all that lol A distant cousin, also called Charlie blount (Jane's real last name) came forward and was a match, last I heard he was recovering and doing well Also try "goodbye my lover" by James Blunt

The comments here werre close but a bit off. The im not your son lines are about how their are roles that come along witb fatherhood and being a son. You assume a role as a father, one with unique responsibilities and demands. You act a certain eay, talk a certain way around your child. You do this because you are fullfilling your duties as a father. You would never act atound uour son the way you act around your friends. And a son will assume his own role. Acting one way around his friends and classmates and another when he is with his father. James is saying that the time is up, life is coming to end and we no longer need to inhabit these costumes of father and son. These costumes have served us well but at the end of the day they are a charade and a barrier. Let us simply be who we actually are, just two grown men, grown men who have lived lives, lives with regrets, mistakes, triumphs and everything in between. Let us spend the last moments of your life experiencing our true selves. That is the purest form of love aftetall. Uunconditional

***If you decide you want to make reaction videos you MUST be 100% authentic about them. What I mean by this is to actually LISTEN to the words while WATCHING the video and then let those words sink in so you're not only understanding what the lyrics are telling you, but also be AUTHENTIC in your reaction to the video. DON'T be moving around and making sounds and then repeat the words he's saying like as if you're really listening to them. YOU NEED TO HAVE AN AUTHENTIC REACTION to what you are listening to and it was so painfully obvious that this was NOT the case during your "reaction" to this song and I KNOW you weren't being authentic because you weren't even paying attention to what he was saying in the song and it wasn't until 3/4 of the way through the video that you FINALLY LISTENED TO WHAT HE WAS SINGING ABOUT! I have watched close to 100, if not more, reaction videos to this particular song and everyone, except you, caught onto what this song was about as soon as he got to the "I am not your son, you are not my father. We are just two grown men saying goodbye" which is pretty much at the beginning. Yet in your case you didn't even realize what the song was about at all! You were whooping about how he sounded, but had absolutely NO true reaction to WHAT HE WAS ACTUALLY SAYING. It was more like you were putting on a show for the people who were actually tuning in thinking they were going to see you having an authentic REACTION TO this video only to realize this wasn't the case.. And I'm thinking that this is how you conduct all of your REACTION videos. You make your noises in regards to what the singer sounds like and you pause the video to say something about the singers voice or a musical instrument, BUT you pay NO attention to WHAT words are actually being said. This is not a true reaction video and the reason why it isn't is because you're too busy pretending to be listening to it, yet not ACTUALLY HEARING the WORDS he's saying. The lyrics to the song are the reason for the song, and the music that accompanies it is just to make sure the listener remembers the song so that it's etched into the listeners mind. So if you're not paying attention to what the singers words are then you're doing an injustice to the song. It was so painfully obvious that you could care less about the message that the singer was trying to convey to his audience and of the story behind it. But instead you were only pretending to react by making comments that would essentially fit any and all songs. In other words, what you were saying and doing is a generic reaction and would fit any song. So you could literally change out the music but still leave in your commentary and no one would know. Unfortunately this song is a VERY personal and true story about his own father and it comes straight from Blunt's heart so it wasn't that difficult to see that you weren't really listening to the words he was saying because your demeanor did not fit with the gravity of what the song is all about. It surprised me on how long it took before you did finally realize what he was singing about and you can actually SEE it registering first in your face and then the rest of yourself seconds later. But you should've caught on a LOT sooner than 3/4 of the way through the song. But you should've caught on right at the first "I'm not your son and you're not my father....." part, but it was as if you never heard any words at all and since that's the spot where everyone else's face all of a sudden drastically changes to a more sorrowful expression, that was when I realized you weren't listening to it at all. I really like watching these reaction videos but I want the reactions to be authentic ones since that's the point of them, and the pausing of a video, rather once or several times is also not allowing for a true reaction. Watch the whole video uninterrupted and THEN make your comments or pose any questions at that time. Continually pausing it ruins the experience, especially so when it's just to ask a bunch of questions that really CAN just wait until AFTER the video is over, but I'm finding that if it's an emotional song like this one is, people overuse the pause in hopes that they can then curb their emotions so they aren't or try to stop themselves from crying, but then it isn't an authentic reaction either. Watching the persons true reactions to the video is the reason for it being called a Reaction Video and if you don't, can't or won't show certain emotions then it doesn't make any sense making reaction videos. I truly like the energy you bring to your channel so I apologize if I'm coming across as a beotch. HOLEY CANNOLI THIS COMMENT JUST MORPHED INTO WHOLE EFFING NOVEL!! Sorry about that....truly. See? There's things I really need to work on myself!! And one of them apparently is to stop overusing words for a friggin comment. 🤣🤣🤣 (FYI: IF you feel the need to reply or send me a message please make peace with the fact that I will never read it or even see it. I refuse to do the back and forth debate on my comments and I just don't want anyone wasting their time).✌❤
