I remember seeing this on the big screen. The moment that British flag parachute opens synced with that first few notes of the 007 theme song. The movie house just erupted in cheers.

I don’t know if Rick remembers, but I was sitting at the table, in front of the Chamois, in Squaw Valley when he first put this stunt together. Not the “James Bond Gig”, but the original idea of jumping off ‘El Cap” in Yosemite. There were about 4 or 5 other people there. Most likely the usual gathering of ski patrol and rock climbers Norm Simmons, Mike Hoover John Carnell Paul Sullivan and the like. I don’t think he had yet done any Sky-diving, it was just a kind of “pipe-dream”. I mean base-jumping, hang-gliding and even Ski Boarding was still in the future. When I actually saw the film I was aware it was even him. It was already a fete-accomplish by that time and I figured some stunt man had ripped off the idea.

still would like to know how in the world he ejected his skis in mid air approaching terminal velocity and how the ski didn't hit the open parachute??

cityofchamps66 have a look at the movie about Shane McConkey. McConkey borrowed Sylvester’s idea of strings attached to a pair of modified ski bindings (Tyrolia) which enabled quicker release of the skis. You can see this in the pic of him at around 12:45

I guess they figured since both objects falling about same speed the parachute would just push the ski aside and not have enough velocity to tear the fabric... but that was still pretty sketch.
@randomhuman973 жыл бұрын
I guess it's all about the timing of the parachute release. He could have kept those on until he lands, but then the landing will have to be perfect or he'll break his legs

I could never understand where in Europe was this location because I could not think of one. Of course now I know it is not in a European public ski area but a Canadian inaccessible one.
