The Man with the Golden Gun is the twelfth novel (and thirteenth book) of Ian Fleming's James Bond series. It was first published by Jonathan Cape in the UK on 1 April 1965, eight months after the author's death. The novel was not as detailed or polished as the others in the series, leading to poor but polite reviews. Despite that, the book was a best-seller.
The story centres on the fictional British Secret Service operative James Bond, who had been posted missing, presumed dead, after his last mission in Japan. Bond returns to England via the Soviet Union, where he had been brainwashed to attempt to assassinate his superior, M. After being "cured" by the MI6 doctors, Bond is sent to the Caribbean to find and kill Francisco Scaramanga, the titular "Man with the Golden Gun".
The first draft and part of the editing process was completed before Fleming's death and the manuscript had passed through the hands of his copy editor, William Plomer, but it was not as polished as other Bond stories. Much of the detail contained in the previous novels was missing, as this was often added by Fleming in the second draft. Publishers Jonathan Cape passed the manuscript to Kingsley Amis for his thoughts and advice on the story, although his suggestions were not subsequently used.
The novel was serialised in 1965, firstly in the Daily Express and then in Playboy; in 1966 a daily comic strip adaptation was also published in the Daily Express. In 1974 the book was loosely adapted as the ninth film in the Eon Productions James Bond series, with Roger Moore playing Bond and Fleming's cousin, Christopher Lee, as Scaramanga.

I have watched the film, but listening to this audio book has been more rewarding, fires up my imagination allowing me to walk the streets of Jamaica, awaking my senses and ultimately rekindle my love of everything 007 related. Time to rewatch the films. Also love the natural cadence of narrator.

Thoroughly enjoyable … This always gets a bad press as an unfinished novel ….. I’ve always enjoyed it and it’s better than some other of his novels in my humble opinion . I also love the movie so I clearly have bad taste if you go by what the critics say

Knowing the 1974 film, it is nice to hear the original 1965 novel many fans had forgotten. But, it is sad that Ian Fleming died before he could finish it, so it sounded unpolished or incomplete, with the anti-Bond villain himself doesn't sound as smart as in the film with Christopher Lee, because he is crazy, and rather tortures than kill quickly. I like the part when the novel said the Golden Gun was a gold Colt. 45. (39:11) The game Perfect Dark actually had a weapon based on the original version of Scaramanga's weapon, the DY357-LX. But, the golden derringer with snake venom in the end wasn't expected. Scaramanga dang near got Bond!

@@alwaysOPEN4business As if you have any clues at all. For the record, Colonel Sun has no correlation to the Bond franchise in any way, shape or form (unless that's going to be the next film) YET, they lifted the passage that Blofeld (who was given the name Oberhauser when he shouldn't have been, by the way - that's from the Octopussy book) said about being present when a man was deprived of his eyes. What I said was to mark those words (see above) because, for those who DO have a clue, the director would be extremely remiss not to use that particular line - even if the film is a continuation from No Time To Die OR Die Another Day - which, is what it should be. But, Hollywood, you know.., It's not like they ever followed the chronology or anything, is it..(!)

Fun fact: the movie featured Christopher Lee as the villain. Lee was a close friend of Ian Fleming during the War, and the latter based the character of James Bond on the former's exploits as a spy and a Nazi-hunter. Lee was the first considered for the role of Bond in fact.

This was actually quite tiresome. Ian Fleming didn't finish this book - it was finished by his editor. Fleming told the publishers that he'd not be writing any more James Bond books. The book came out almost a year after Fleming died. Most people agree that The man with the golden gun was the worst Bond story. Maybe it would have been far better had Fleming been able to do the final draft.

If you find awful accents off-putting, be aware that the narrator is amongst the worst I have ever heard, which is fairly odd as this book features a LOT of characters from Forn Parts. He seems to think a Jamaican accent is somewhere between a Welshman doing a Pakistani accent, and a Pakistani man doing a Welsh accent with deviations into some kind of generic Cockney, but in no-way even accidently veers close to Jamaican. It's sufficiently distracting I kept having to rewind to listen to several characters as my brain was in revolt the first time. The Americans are, if anything, even worse. I have no idea what he's going for, but at various times Scaramanga seems to be from generic Yankimerica, Boston, New Jersey, Texas, Wyoming and California, often shifting mid-sentence.
