Uncle Brizz.. Yes, but his band was on fire BECAUSE JB wouldn't settle for anything less.. He PERSONALLY rehearsed and worked that band, and EVERY band he had, into to a fine-tuned machine.. There's video of James fining band members for missing licks in the middle of live shows.. He would 'flash five' fingers at the player for however many dollars it would be..

1968 was also the year I discovered James. I'm a little White boy with a new transistor radio. The usual Top 40 wasn't doing it for me one afternoon so I started flipping through channels and came upon 'There Was A Time'. I was compelled to bop to the beat. I'd never heard anything like this. My mother was not amused hearing that come from my room and requested I find a 'station where they play good music'. Yeah, right. I don't entirely know how visible James was to White audiences then. I know my parents had never heard of him. When I scanned this audience, they appear predominantly White. I'm betting very few people had any clue who he was. Later, a friend of mine had me over to is house to listen to records. His way older brother, who was in a band at the time, had a sizeable collection of James' records. Great! I managed to become acquainted with several of his tracks. Legendary.

James Brown is my second favorite artist ever but Elvis was the first "real" entertainer. He put the concept of singing and dancing, show business and lifestyle into one package. Modern celebrity culture largely stems from Elvis. Even musicals like Grease or Saturday Night Fever are largely based on the persona of Elvis and movies like Loving You.

@littlejimmyscumbag25518 жыл бұрын
Read what I said, "the concept of singing, dancing, show business and lifestyle into one package." Everybody has been singing and dancing since the beginning of time. Elvis' influences came from many black entertainers and many more white entertainers as well as some Latin and European influences. But the concept of the "CELEBRITY" comes from Elvis. He was the first real celebrity where he became a figure onto himself and became apart of the fabric of society. That's the basis for the modern celebrity.

As already noted by the previous poster, that was comedic actor Phil Silvers, not Fred Silverman who was a big-time TV executive for many years. Johnny Carson used to joke about him on the Tonight Show back in the day. The Hollywood Palace was a weekly TV variety show that was on ABC if I remember correctly. Phil Silvers was a very funny guy and was the star of an absolutely hilarious sitcom called The Phil Silvers Show from 1955-59 in which he played Sergeant Bilko (some people think that's the name of the show). The show was centered around the antics of a crew of soldiers in a military motor pool. I love that show -- worth checking out if you can find it. They don't make 'em like that show anymore. Think I'll go have a look around youtube....
