James Cameron was working as a truck driver when he first saw Star Wars in 1977. He quit his job and turned his skills towards becoming a film maker. I bet he thanked George for inspiring him. It's incredible to see these two pioneers sitting down together and reflecting on the genre that they helped forge. Amazing.

He didn't quit his job right then. He spent the next several years reading books on filmmaking he made copies of from the Library while working as a long haul trucker. He talked on Stern about it. He apparently gave himself a college level education in film making just from the library and was able to convince someone to fund his first project just to prove he had chops to shop around at studios.

@@Ratchet2431 Structurally, the prequels are indeed brilliant. Someone using a civil war he started to seize absolute power? That's a classic authoritarian move. The execution...sigh. Famously terrible dialogue, WAY overboard on CGI, basically made watchable by a couple of great actors who managed to salvage key scenes. Ewan fought George on the Mustafar scene. George was like, "You're furious, you're raging." Ewan was like, "Obi-Wan wouldn't do that, he'd be heartbroken." Ewan won that one. The scene would have been a disaster with George's vision.

Cameron gets it. He GETS the best part about the prequels. I consider them amazing movies, although not perfect, as no film is perfect. But they are extremely good art IMO. And I always knew someone like Cameron would get it, doesn't surprise me at all. The themes explored, from the pitfalls of being a control freak, fear of not being able to control things, attachment to abstract things like not wanting to forget a memory. And the themes of populism and the dangers of people giving away their own liberty because of blind faith in the leader. THAT is just amazing. I only wish they had shown what exactly it IS about Palpatine, that makes the senators trust him so much. WHY is it that like Hitler, Trump or Modi (not that they are all equally bad) lead people to give up their own rights in favour of the leader's power? We know the answer to this. Now give an explanation to why it is the case with Palpatine too. Only thing missing IMO That being said, these films are far too imaginative to really claim they are "bad movies" because they have SO MUCH good about them. Quite unlike the cash grab trilogy

honestly believe it or not there was a touch of philosophy and history in The Force Awakens and Rogue One. TFA resembling the NATO especially the Gulf War of 1990 and R1 simply being Pearl Harbor. Its TLJ where they fucked up. I'm not defending the new trilogy they tried and failed to think like Lucas. Rogue One was the only film I liked of what Disney produced. TFA wasn't lazy but lackluster and imitating. TLJ, I dont even know wtf is that.

Even back in the day people hated George for the prequels, I defended them for how good they are to me. If it wasn't for him and many other creators or films or music or shows that inspired me and many other aspiring creators, we wouldn't have found ourselves. Star Wars films (including VII & VIII) are my main inspirations for storytelling along with many other films or music that help me create my own original plots or adaptations. George Lucas was the main reason why Star Wars got popular, he did the writing and direction behind the scenes. He pulled his own weight and wanted what he made to be what he wanted to see in theaters or in his house, but what really helped was the people around him helping his vision succeed. His wife was the main editor after the horrible editors picked for the first film but because he had people helping him, he became a legend worth praising. But it was a shame that even he knew people wouldn't look at his prequel series if he directed them and asked for help, but there was one thing all the directors said, 'no', why? Because it was his vision and that he should work for it to see his vision come to life. A cocky move but it's his work, not Spielberg's, David Lynch's or anyone else's, it was a George Lucas original. Plus it was a lesson of self discipline, because the more people bashed on George, the better he made the prequels (the second was alright and felt like a Star Wars film before it got good, by that I meant it had a lot positives and negatives but it was different from the original trilogy because it was in the past) as you could see in the third film. It was my favourite and had great action, great musical score and perfect acting (no matter how bad you think it might be, The Room was a prime example for how to not make a film). George will always be one of my influences for storytelling and world building, the negatives obviously have to be taken out and figure out what really works and what feels engaging and what feels exciting. Also because of the prequels, I have a love for music in fight scenes that are in sync with each other. Thanks George for starting something incredible.

It is so sad how false hatred can lead to a tragedy (of Lucas). He has "failed" because he made so fantastic first trilogy later the fans thought that with the prequels Lucas made a bad decision. I think those fans were ungrateful to Lucas who has decided to show more about the story on the screen. Then he just sold his child (he got tired by the criticism) and now we won't know what would have been the real story of the last Skywalker trilogy. :( One thing is sure by his interviews that we would haven seen more about Skywalkers in ep 7-9. But Disney have thrown out the old ideas.

Anna Sárközi I completely agree. I love the prequels. It was an incredible story and people didn't like it because they didn't play into nostalgia. He told the gritty backstory of politics and failure of government and Jedi.

(Lengthy but read to the end if you can) We know what the real story was. Luke marries an assassin called Mara Jade, originally meant to kill him. Han and Leia have three children, Jaina and Jacen (twins) and Anakin - the empire fractures into small sections - Enter Thrawn to bring it all back together for a final push - fails because he fails to see the traitor right in front of him despite his military genious. Later, Luke founds the Jedi Academy spitting out students both good and bad. Both the bes and worst being Kyp Durron, turned to the dark side, annihilated a few systems before Luke manages to turn him back without killing him. Kyp pays his dues and dedicates his life to make amens - All that crap changes with the arrival of the Yuuzhan Vong - an extra galactial species that the Jedi can't sense by the force. Chaos insues - the galaxy is enveloped in flame - war rages, the Jedi unite, defeat them, but it costs Jacen Solo his soul (huge parallel here with Kylo Ren) and he becomes Darth Caedus - murders Luke's wife, Mara, and is later defeated by Jaina who trained in combat techniques of the Madalorians with no other than Boba Fett (escaped from the sarlac shortly after ROTJ). Ben Skywalker, son of Mara and Luke, falls in love with a Sith girl - you can imagine Luke's reaction - and FINISH - because Disney was sold, they threw the canon out, we never got to see the end of that tale, and it was usurped for the pile of trash that was the Last Jedi. Too lazy to write a complex back story for Luke, they were content to have him go into exile for 20+ years because it means they don't have to explain ANYTHING. The expanded universe is the one I accept as Star Wars. I liked the Force Awakens and many promising things happened and I thought the new trilogy, while not amazing, would be good. TLJ was a disaster.

This makes me hate the new movies even more. Instead of the first order suddenly being in charge with no explanation it should have been the rebels were now the government that was struggling with governing a galaxy and there was resistance from certain groups that feel left out of the rebuilding and gather support like a napoleonic figure after the French revolution succeeded

Yes, there's so much that could've been done with the New Republic and new terrorist groups attacking and so on.

AzerGhost16 When Hitler died the Nazi army died as well right? Yes many soldiers and other members survived but they never gain power again! Same with The Empire and The Emperor which is clearly based on.

AzerGhost16 The last jedi was a complete mess filled with sjw propaganda,a dump twilight romance between rey and kylo,and plot holes everywhere so You shouldn't be taken that film seriously

AzerGhost16 Honestly riam johnson should have be given a solo film like rogue one or something then he could have done whatever the hell he wanted and no one would care but what he did with luke skywalker divided a whole fan base (which is a colossal one)

@Ian Seager ... What? There is literally an explantion for the rise of the First Order in Rise Of Skywalker. Palpatine literally tells Kylo Ren he created Snoke and was the puppet master behind the scenes in which the First Order was able to rise.

Say what you want about the prequels but they were bad because Lucas wabted to do too much, not because he didn't care about film-making. He tried to do new things and avoided what pretty much every film maker and publisher does, which is to take the safe route and put out generic crap. Disney being a perfect example.

I feel quite sorry for George Lucas. The prequels were not bad, and because everyone complained so much, he sold to Disney, and then we got Rian Johnson's truly dog shit movie that has ruined star wars beyond repair. Well done everyone!
@ArtixxPlays6 жыл бұрын
He had to sell LucasFim because the company was low on funds and he didn't want the crew members to lose their jobs. Selling to Disney saved their jobs and saved the future of Star Wars, that is until Rian Johnson shitted on the legacy.

Toxic ArtixX I'm sire he said he didn't want to be shouted at anymore as well though....either way, we didn't know how lucky we were until he stepped off, which led to us getting what must have been the worst possible person. To write a script.

"Ruined Star Wars beyond repair". Talk about strange, strange melodrama! Star Wars is as alive as it has ever been, the comics have been good recently, Rebels was decent, the new films are popular, Filoni's Resistance is on the way etc etc. I'm excited to see where things go! Blank canvas
@crazytrain77216 жыл бұрын
r3genschirm yeah I'm sure, when I say beyond repair, I'm talking solely about the movies. Sorry but TLJ was so unbelievably bad, and the biggest let down after such a long wait. So many missed opportunities
@regenschirm6 жыл бұрын
So because of TLJ, Star Wars 9 is ruined beyond repair. And Rian Johnson's new trilogy, also ruined. The Obi Wan trilogy too, if rumours are true, I guess that's also ruined because of TLJ? The list goes on. For me, TLJ was a mixed bag but generally enjoyable

I ser many people complaining about the sequel trilogy as if it betrays those themes and ideas, and while I would say that ep. IX definitely does, VII and VIII, either by design or by accident (I think by accident in VII and by design in VIII), did honor these same ideas. The empire fell but the victory was weak and insufficient, and that allowed for an equally imperialist power (the First Order) to rise very easily; and then the whole story arc with Luke critiquing the role of the Jedi in the fall of the Republic, AND FURTHERMORE, the notion of finally addressing class issues, and how capital is the primary driver of imperialism, it was all just so good. Sad to see it all dropped in IX, but hey, at least Star Wars was good for a few more years...

You can hear the difference in their viewpoints, if you read between the lines. Lucas is all out critical of America, Cameron keeps trying to defend America.
