Thank you James Carroll, from another exile. I too have been told to just go to a Protestant church. I have and its nice--but its not my spiritual home. I will always be a visitor in such churches. I want to go to Mass, but I can't get past the misogyny of the Church. Their hostility to women affected my family profoundly. Also, when the Church turned a blind eye to clerical sexual abuse, they made it possible for one of their "Christian brothers," to molest my sister in law, a fact which makes me so angry I still get the shakes. No. I'm not going back to Mass until I see a woman saying it.

The Episcopalian Mass is no different from the Roman Catholic Mass. Wake up and stop your daydreaming of the "wonder" of the Roman Catholic Mass! The Episcopalian Church is a church of the 21st century and the Roman Catholic Church is a church of the Middle Ages. Shouldn't this be your basis for attending a relevant church!
@mightymissk3 жыл бұрын
@@leoinsf My understanding is that Protestant Churches, including the Anglican Church and it's American cousin the Episcopalian Church, do not believe in the Miracle of Transubstantiation. Like all Catholics, even as an exile, I do. Although I am furiously angry with the all male hierarchy of the Catholic Church for their misogynistic policies, that doesn't mean that I don't accept the basic tenets of the faith and it doesn't mean that I subscribe to anti-Catholic bigotry. And I'm getting a whiff of that bigotry from your comment.
@@leoinsf We're talking about Christianity here, a 2000 year old religion based on the proposition that God became a man for 33 years, was crucified, died, was buried and then rose again on the 3rd day. That's the of Christian faith. If you can accept this extraordinary story in the Gospels on faith, why is it so hard for you to accept that Jesus really is present at Mass? Oh right. Its the anti-Catholic bigotry kicking in eh? I notice you were so busy being condescending that you didn't even bother to address that.
@leoinsf3 жыл бұрын
@@mightymissk My only anti-Catholic bigotry is one of logic and relevancy. It is obvious that certain Catholic issues were a product of the Middle Ages and deeply felt. However, we are not living in the Middle Ages and there is nothing wrong with using modern intelligence to question Middle Ages logic. Please know that questioning is not necessarily anti-Catholic bigotry. It is a necessary ingredient in modernisation. If we used your reluctance to use logic in the medical and in the scientific area, we would be bloodletting (a Middle Ages concept) and you know where this would lead.

One is never a born a Catholic (or anything else), but only ever into a given religious milieu. Questionable whether men can be feminists, even when supportive of it? Surely an exclusively female thing? Church's supra secular reporting structures probably spin-off of Christ's reassurance to Pilate's authority that His "... kingdom was not of this world"? James Carroll is a boon to the RC church specifically, and Christianity generically. Would that it would hear his word. Good interview. Great series.

Why is feminism "Surely an exclusively female thing?" Who are you, the Pope of feminism? Of course men can be feminists! If they don't hate women, if they don't regard female people as objects of temptation and scorn, then they already are feminists. I've been in debates with other women, where my only ally was a young man. Misogyny is a BELIEF SYSTEM, not an inherent male trait. Its misogyny that is the problem, not men.

anyone can be a feminist...just as we ( women) have been victims, of, supporters, or just a neutral part of patriarchy for centuries. If you can’t imagine yourself as a feminist, you don’t know what feminism is...do a little research.

James, you are verbalizing what I see about my former church. The Catholic Church has appeal for the lazy-brained Christian who finds strength in ritual and in not questioning anything. Meanwhile, it is the questioning Christian who is the Jesus-follower because Jesus did not preach acceptance of the status quo. James, please know that no-one is a "born Catholic" and "has the institution of the Catholic Church in their "bones." Please take a big grown-up breath and come to the realization that the Catholic Church is not going to change because it is institutionally built to fight reality and "live" in the past. When you say that the Catholic Church does not live in a Jesus world, but in a Middle Ages world, you are saying that the Catholic Church is not going to change: ever! You know that abolishing the priesthood is never going to happen in the Catholic Church and know: you are living in a dream-world and your Catholicism is flawed. Wake up!!!!

It is my opinion that Jesus established the priesthood after choosing 12 men who we refer to as apostles. Yet there is more. Jesus is a man, the Son of God, and chose Peter to take his place when he ascended into Heaven. He changed his name from Simon to Peter - a name which means "Rock", and gave him the keys to the Kingdom - the authority to decide. In other words, Peter - the first leader or pope - is acting in the place of Jesus - the Vicar of Christ or pope. When Mass is celebrated, we are taken back into time at the Last Supper when Jesus says, "Take and eat. This is my body, which will be given up for you." The priest is acting in 'persona Christi' - acting in the place of Christ. So it would be difficult for a woman to act in the person of Christ - the Son of God - not the daughter of God. The Church was established by Jesus who is God. For a person to challenge that Church would be like challenging God. With all due respect to James Carroll, the Church is what it is, and we may all pick and choose what we would like it to be or do, but that is what caused the Reformation and its now 30,000 denominations - a loss of real unity that the Church had before. I'll pray for you James that you and all of us can submit to the will of God, and not necessarily push our own will on others. And for real charity in continuing to reach out to those most in need. Women have a part in the Church as did Mary - the mother of Jesus.

The priesthood doesn’t denigrate all that aren’t priests just because they’re not priests. There are priests out there who have such attitudes, but the same attitude exists among some clergy in every other church too. Sex abuse also occurs in every other church too and often at a higher ratio of occurrence, so I don’t see how his ideas would make any difference whatsoever.

@@reviewreviewer1 We have, and I urge you to read the whole passage in context. Consider that the power to forgive/retain sin is in us all, as we are all given the Holy Spirit the moment we choose to be baptized in the name of the Messiah. The apostles were not priests. Christ never sought to disrupt or replace the priesthood (Aaronite/Levite) that His Father in Heaven instituted. Also, Christ *never* recommended or even condoned the withholding of forgiveness for sins. Yes, we have the power to do that, but He also warns us that if we refuse to forgive others FOR ANY REASON, God also will refuse to forgive us. He said this plainly *and* in parables. Pray on this hard, and consider the wider narrative weighed against the entire legacy of scripture. God bless you, brother, and keep on seeking our Lord.
@reviewreviewer13 жыл бұрын
@@MrAmericanaSam Christ says it specifically to his apostles, (as he does with some other things) which is why he makes a distinction between his apostles and the other disciples. You should have told the early Church the apostles weren't priests. He accepted the priesthood as instituted, but the new covenant did fulfil the old. The priesthood in fact ended with the destruction of the second temple. Gamaliel even joined the Church and followed the apostles. Read Christ's words again. He said that whatever sins the apostles didn't forgive weren't forgiven, so yes, he did condone the apostles exercising such authority. Yes Christ said this certainly, which is why we should forgive, and we the authority granted to the apostles was very different. I consider the narrative the way it was understood by the apostles and their successors.
