It could have to do with the stiffness he displays. His shoulders are way up high. Maybe if he relaxed a lill he'd be able to open his lower and back ribcage capacity

It's not just confidence, he has met vocal coach before (you can see videos of it if you look up for it) and I think he worked on what they told him he should work on, voice is an instrument and you have to "force it" to make it sound like you want it to sound

James charles is actually a decent singer, he just needs to work on his confidence in his singing. People are just quick to hate on James over past mistakes, he's human like everyone else give him a break. Coming from someone who used to be in chorus. I noticed that a few of the weird facial expressions James is making, are messing him up. I also noticed that James is shifting and locking his jaw weirdly in some moments. This makes it harder to produce a nice clear sound on some notes. This happens because it closes off the back of throat, this overtime can also cause vocal strain, which is something you don't want. Also I see James having a lot of tongue tension as well, this can cause bad pronunciation and flat notes. If he worked on relaxing his tongue and jaw, he would sound so much more clear and overall better.

I used to be a soprano in chorus and it was a little difficult to control your voice at times. This leads to voice cracks and wrong pitches. Clenching of the jaws I guess are used as a crutch to keep his voice in control but I do agree with the facial expressions. Still though, he’s come so far.

However the tensing, shifting, or locking of the jaw can mess a lot of people up. Not saying that he can't move his jaw it should just be minimal and relaxed. no, any vocal technique teacher would tell you that his shoulders and back are becoming tense which can cause your neck to pull back a bit and your shoulders to raise, which is not good. A lot of people i mean a LOT of people have this problem, and it takes a bit of work. I used to, and still sometimes, do have this issue. But any vocal coach telling you to do that is um... well they’re doing their own thing. I have practiced with a vocal coach but now have been taught by a technique teacher for years, and have learned the difference from experience and explanations. A coach will help you with performance and just making you sound good in general, without the teachings of specific technique other than breathing correctly ( which is also sometimes not taught). While a technique teacher teaches you and helps you developed good singing techniques so your sound will last better in the long run, so you won’t screw with your vocal chords, and so you can sound better to the trained and untrained ear. Last year I was in a musical, and had a solo number which I worked on with my teacher. I was having major issues with tensing up my neck and back while belting the highest notes, and trust me lifted shoulders DO NOT help you hit high notes in any way. It is much easier when your neck and shoulders are relaxed, which i will say isn’t easy for everyone or me. his shoulder raises are also often from taking shallow breaths and no breathing using his diaphragm. Anyways have a great day/ night, i just thought i’d put this out there. No hate at all towards you or james charles, besides he is clearly doing something he loves.

@@LoveYourself-un5ct I'm a classically trained singer and I sing for paid side gigs in cafes and parties casually. I genuinely don't think MOST people are spewing on him just because he's James Charles. As a person who's been professionally trained since a young age, you start to take notice of the large and small things that could be wrong with his technique. He has major potential to be a great singer but I feel like stylistically, he's trying way too hard to add elements that he thinks sounds good and fancy (like messy vocal runs where they aren't needed, lack of breath control, tension and stiffness in the muscles, and strain on the voice in general). None of us are trying to criticize him to be mean. I for one really enjoy his voice when he's singing casually and not trying to impress an audience. it's much more pleasant when he's relaxed, which isn't really showcased in this particular video. Other than that, no hate here! I love James! :) ❤️

Cause saying that doesn’t help anyone. Even I can see there are some things wrong with the singing and again I’m no professional, but I feel like when experienced people like u actually point out the mistakes it’s much better than just seeing like a plain hate comment by someone who doesn’t know what their talking about. Having opinions is ofc fine tho
