Dean has such depth in his character here. He looked deep inside his own fears and loneliness. And put those emotions into his character. Great acting .

I love the way James Dean's voice breaks in some places, yet he doesnt the loose the character in the flood of his emotions, a proof of his unfiltered and raw acting! Reagan did a good job too, an organized and composed demeanor thruout.

Reagan was not a great actor, not at all. If he were he'd have stayed an actor and not gone into politics. He probably knew that. Reagan was a great showman. The smoke and mirrors kind.
@Nikes62

Reagan was one dimensional and of the wooden variety, his acting career came to a grinding halt. He became successful as a spokesperson for Westinghouse, then as the narrator on the TV western "Wagon Train", his last acting job, then shortly after he started his long foray into politics as gov of California. Even his first wife, Jane Wyman did not think that much of him as an actor.

Reagan may not have been a great actor, but was not a bad one. He was very dedicated to his career and had some truly good moments on film. His ability to memorize a lot of dialogue helped him become an excellent public speaker, first as a General Electric spokesman and then as a politician. Regardless of whether you agreed with his politics, he certainly succeeded in the careers he undertook.

On Nov. 13, 1986, President Reagan declared in a national address, “We did not - repeat - did not trade weapons or anything else for hostages - nor will we.” He lied. Arms sales to Iran acted as leverage to assist in getting American hostages released from Lebanon. Missile shipments were huge. Two thousand and four TOW missiles, along with 18 HAWK missiles. By early 1986, profits from the arms sales were being channeled to provide unauthorized support for the Contras. Have we all forgotten the facts? Look into it. Unfortunately we need a leader with substance, not an actor.

Thanks for the civil response! Rare from either "side". Yes, it is possible Reagan was unaware of what was done- unfortunately, that is the problem. He made it clear what he wanted and fostered the environment where this could happen. It is also clear that Reagan did suffer from early stages of the horrible disease that killed him while in office. I agree that Reagan was the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with, but we need more from our leaders then that. Thanks!

This is my favorite thing that Dean did. It has a slight "Pulp Fiction" feel to it. You can see where Tarantino got some of his ideas from in 1940s and '50s movies. Pill poppers getting into trouble and falling on dark times.

Wow! High and intense drama. I had never seen this clip before. All TV in those days was presented live and everyone was very convincing. Dean as always, so powerful. Imagine if he had lived instead of having his young life cut short so suddenly. Only 24 at the time of his death in 1955 and even then a true star which still shines brightly.

Wow! It took me a while to watch this because I don't care for Ronald Reagan's acting, but he was actually very good in this. And I loved Jimmy's bad guy performance. It was very intense! This is truly a gem. Thanks for the upload.

Reagan could have easily played Joe Friday on Dragnet. He has a very "Jack Webb" style demeanor in this film. Great actor.

Two distinct acting styles collide. This is the best example I can think of if you want to SEE the fact that acting changes over time, and rarely but occasionally, two very different eras run right into each other. Don't write RR off, look tat 5:00 in the scene and you'll see he's just as powerful as JD, who at that point is getting overwrought. Amazing opportunity to see this.

James Dean was smoking hot! Even though he was around way before I was born, I can't help it... I sincerely CURSE that day of September 30, 1955. Why in God's name did he have to set foot in that damned Porsche, drive it through that fucked up intersection and crash into that Ford Tutor? I find it a sinful, tragic abomination that the world had to lose such a BEAUTIFUL and GORGEOUSLY SEXY-LOOKING specimen of a man...... FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU!

backdoor68 Yeah you know Clint Eastwood is pretty old too (and around the same age Dean would be right now if he were still living) and he's still going strong! Who knows? XD ha ha ha. (Plus don't forget to mention Jack Nicholson, Christopher Walken, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, etc... all around the same age as JD)

+That's What You Get For Waking Up In Vegas I agree it was such a waste--unfortunately Dean was a speed addict--and got into the very dangerous sport of racing---he terrorized more than a few friends in his Porsche racing around the Hollywood Hills in the weeks before he crashed his car--WArners seeing what was happening forbade him from racing during film production. alas, they couldn't stop him from doing so after filming....he was a beautiful actor with awesome talent.

Interesting how the make-up on Dean "unprettied" him e.g., darkened his eyebrows, gave him a 5 o'clock shadow. Lousy material, but Dean and Reagan made the most of it.

They both played their character well and delivered their scripts well. Mutual respect and individual actors playing their roles as best they may and in big screen blck & whte. Now are the days. We are still actors watching actors and acting as doing the best that we can to better give and get back and practicing better agreements that we make along that way which we prove as the correct way and in.the right ways. Chuckle, it is another great "old b&w movie clip", of written scripts delivered by human actors. It is another part of the human arts. "Well done"?: well, that may still be debatable. Chuckle.

@searcherboy. You also failed to mention that Reagan beat his two Democratic opponents in the elections of 1980 and 1984 by 48 and 49 state LANDSLIDES, something that has never been seen before in American history, I guess you missed these FACTS as well..

He was a leading man at Warner Bros. for many years and made over 50 feature films and then a lot of TV shows once it came to be. He was not only the host of this long running "General Electric Theatre" Show but was lead actor in more episodes than any other star of this same series. Just about every big name in Hollywood appeared in various episodes of the show over its 8 year-run. RR was in Hollywood for almost 30 years.
