The man's been accused of sexual assault, is being questioned on international television about it, understands how quick public opinions about him can change because of it, and is thinking about the implications it will have on his life. Whether the allegations are true or not, he's scared. The whole "he's scared because he's guilty" argument isn’t really an argument; an innocent person can be scared if they’re accused, as can a guilty person. If he’s guilty, he needs to own it and face the consequences.

Not convincing enough, he could have done better to try and display that the accusations weren't true. Just seems like someone who has been caught and crumbling at the sight of truth and implication. He has been in this business long enough and should have anticipated the questioning.

I can definitely understand that. You're right, it's certainly nothing like the accusations from Harvey's accusers. And in looking at it that way, I can definitely see how anything he says at this point could be an "atomic bomb" for him. I just hope, for his sake, that this all gets cleared up. It's one thing to lose an actor to drugs, death, etc, but when it's sexual allegations, it just leaves a bad taste. You look at that artists entire body of work you suddenly feel jaded, like all of the lessons you learned from that person are now tainted.

It becomes a catch-22 at that point. If you try to clarify what happened, even if it is completely true, then it's used by opinionated spin-journalist to claim that they are just making 'excuses'. The reality of this whole situation is that a girl deliberately targeted Franco to entrap him and use those few messages to try and bring his whole career down. It's a completely different situation than Bill Cosby who deliberately drugged women to sexually exploit them. Who is preying on who in this situation? It comes across more like the young girl on the other end of the phone.

I don't think that the women are completely lying, and I don't think that James Franco is completely guilty. Not everything is black and white, and I think that they all had different perspectives in the different events, but I feel that people are overlooking a very important aspect of these events: INTENT. We should not hang Franco out to dry, nor should we ignore what these women are saying. We don't know all of the circumstances of these situations or the mindsets of those involved, and it's very possible that James Franco was acting purely artistically and not in a manner of perversion. It is also possible that he's worked with many women that are comfortable with his workmanship which has blinded him to the fact that there are other women that are not comfortable in the same situations. The case with Violet Paley is of course different, but it was also the starting point of a consensual relationship. She says she was not comfortable with the act at that point in time of their relationship, but the fact that they entered into a consensual relationship points to the reality that she most likely displayed interest in James Franco sexually. He may have been jumping the gun by exposing himself in the back of a limo, but some people take less time to become sexual than others. There are plenty of women that move too fast in a relationship too, and I don't think it's a bad thing if the interest is on both sides and as long as it is not forced. I think that the women's Tweets should be used to advise men of uncomfortable situations to not put women in for the future, but I do not think that the information currently known should mar James Franco's character. If it comes out that his actions were more malicious than current information dictates, then lets mar him then. As Mark Twain said, “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”

Facts: there are no charges or even accusations of assault being made against Franco. We have to come up with a very clear definition for what "sexual misconduct" is before we start trying to ruin people's careers over it
@the_glitter_is7 жыл бұрын
Anything sexual in nature that is unwanted, harassing, makes you uncomfortable, feel threatened, etc. And a person should really know the boundaries of what is appropriate, especially in the workplace. Treat women with respect. I think people wanting clearer definitions or worried they will get in trouble for anything are perhaps unwilling to change certain behaviors or recognize the problem at hand.

Well for starters, one doesn't need to be charged in court for their behaviour to be recognized as sexual misconduct. The majority of women who are sexually assaulted do not press charges because of the tendency of juries etc. to not believe them. And don't worry about Franco's career... he's made enough money already that if he doesn't want to he'll never have to act again. And if you listen to his response, it's pretty shady. Dodging questions and waffling like nobody's business.

@katiestolealltheunicorns93097 жыл бұрын
deadhomelessbum I don't know if it's impossible. I just think people are scared of that grey area so they make an assumption and don't try to get to the bottom of it. It's easier if we have the conversations, because there are levels of misconduct, below Harvey Weinstein levels, where I think a lot of men and women and especially powerful and famous people need clear boundaries about what they can and can't do. That's not to diminish the crimes that do happen, but it's human beings who commit them, and I think people want to know very clearly where the law and where society draws the line. I think a lot of people think women are lying not just in situations where they're not lying at all and rape has happened, but in situations where poor communication has happened and a woman has wound up doing something they weren't comfortable with and wondering if they were coerced somewhere along the way. Sometimes they were sometimes they weren't, but this is how poor men and women can be at communicating with each other. I know there are a lot more different kinds of situations, and and it doesn't help when anybody muddies what happened in a given situation. I know sometimes women do lie about being assaulted, but we sort of need to get to the bottom of why that is too, and not just spit venom. But people want to make it black and white in situations where there's any nuance, and I kind of hate that. We need a solid vocabulary for all these things.

civil court cases are decided based on "balance of probability" not "beyond reasonable doubt" the stats on the number of women who have experienced sexual harassment v the stats on the number of men who have had false allegations made against them personally means that on the balance of probability these allegations are true. I'm still undecided on this case, but overall, I am going to believe the women over the men because the stats say they're the ones that are most likely telling the truth

@lilaclizard45047 жыл бұрын
:S even more reason they're innocent until proven guilty! If someone is the victim of murder, they're not assumed to have manipulated & incited the the person who murdered them - until proven otherwise, so why is a victim here guilty of manipulation & deceptive actions to harm the perpetrator - until they prove otherwise? You're not making sense! Statistics here are VERY clear! EVERY woman on the planet has at numerous times in their life experienced sexual harassment! How many times have you been falsely accused of sexually harassing a woman in your life? On the balance of probability (which is the requirement for a ruling in a civil case) the statistics show that the woman is telling the truth & the man is lying (unless there is additional information to counter these stats in an individual case. In this case there's not, but rather there are multiple people supporting the women's claims & only 1 person who is not)
@lilaclizard45047 жыл бұрын
Yes they should both be treated equally, but in cases where that is not possible, just like with everything, the favouritism should go to where the statistics say the truth lies - and that's with the women. Just because men have got away with saying "oh but there's a 1 in 100 chance that a man might be disadvantaged, so 99 women must be required to suffer to ensure that one man is kept safe" for so many years, doesn't make it ok or something that is going to continue into the future! If there's a 99% chance that one side is right, that side is now considered right until proven otherwise - the way it should be!

If you're accused and you deny it, they'll say you're lying and you're victim blaming. If you don't say anything, people still assume you're guilty. Ok I am not a fan of James Franco and I support “me too” movement but according to what I read about the accusations on him (if they were ever true), that’s disgusting but also of the women willingly did that and now starting to act like they were forced I believe that’s something unfair about this whole thing. Unless you really didn’t want to do it and you were force to then it’s a bad thing. Alright wrap it up, ladies or men, if you willingly did that and now want to say you were forced then shame on you. If you were sexually abused without your will then shame on them.

Everyone has Skeletons in their closet. Yet everyone on twitter acts like they live in a glass house. As someone who drives for uber/lyft I cannot believe how many people are verbally abusive to us drivers... male, female of all ages. I have been hit several times in the arm and been fondled and sexually harassed by only the women though. Just tonight a girl n the backseat began pulling on my long hair then asking if she could braid my hair as she ran her fingers through it... so imagine if a guy did this?? it'd be assault. here are far too many double standards in Hollywood.
@aMEXICO20107 жыл бұрын
Newcastle Music Studios i’m sorry to hear that. more than anything nowadays people have lost more of their self respect and respect for others.
@beebuzz9597 жыл бұрын
It's NOT a double standard, it's more someone hitting on you. But if they grabbed you inappropriately, it didn't back off when told to, then that's the assault. Men are not as likely to back down from a woman pursuing them as women do men, nor are they as apt to report it. I also must say that though women do get aggressive with men, I don't think they're as apt to. But there point you're making is there's a double standard in Hollywood, but based on what? Your example is of women in your car. We're those people from Hollywood? If not then even though it exists, it is NOT Hollywood. And who's saying it's okay for them to do it? Nobody! It is NOT okay for ANYONE to force themselves in another person! And there have been men who've spoken out against other men who've assaulted them in Hollywood - Corey Feldman reported it happens to him, and that's also why Kevin Spacey lost his job, because Hollywood says it is NOT okay for men to be asualted either.
@beebuzz9597 жыл бұрын
Newcastle Music Studios Also, I'm VERY sorry you've been treated that way!!! Punching is never okay, not is vernal abuse, or fondling! But are you saying some woman running her hand through your hair is sexual assault? It is not. It is hitting on you, a bit too forwardly, but still not groping. And I'm not saying it's alright, but that's hitting on you, not groping. And if you tell her to stop and she didn't, that's not alright either, and makes what she's doing even worse! But still not groping. But If she reaches down between your legs, that's groping for sure! And if you can stop her ahead of time, it's not getting, but an attempt to grope. If she stops, even though it's inappropriate to attempt, it's still only attempted. But you aren't groped unless she grabs your crotch. The reason I'm saying this is because there are much worse levels of assault, and I don't know what you've experienced, but as a woman who's been hit on by a lot of guys, I also know trying something and forcing something are two completely different things! Trying is just that, trying. Sometimes it's inappropriate, but it's still just trying. And forcing is never okay! It might seem similar, I'm guessing mainly if you've never experienced them both, but I have. And there difference is HUGE! One is a nuisance that just happens because people try to get sex and stuff and that just happens, but the other's an outright offense and completely wrong!

Beanie Green... Women by far have it much worse and men are more aggresive without question. I lived in los angeles for 5 years n worked n the movie/tv industry and from what I saw on a daily basis was both sexes offering business favors for sick n twisted sexual favors.... what I mean by a double standard is women call out men on it but when men say something no one seems to care... Not to mention growing up in foster care I constantly was sexually harassed and told I had to undress in front of women/foster moms etc I didnt know and was uncomfortable with nevertheless no one gave 2 fucks abput how mpst foster kids are treated. There are many boys and men who are abused and it gets overlooked... outside of hollywood the best example is probably the catholic church. I feel although there are far more female victims... the male victims to do not receive an adequate amount of representation in the media. There are several shelters for female victims to retreat to for things like domestic abuse.. yet for men there are are from what I last heard almost none. Another part of the double standard is women who may be aware another woman is beijg victimized or even introduces her to the Perpetrator is in fact conspiring in the Crime. As Seal called out Oprah via a pic on twitter where Oprah has some girl sandwhiched between her n Crazy Old Harvey Weinstein... anyway I am only to heighten awareness that both sides are perpetrating these things despite media representation that seems to single out men etc.

@julie1234047 жыл бұрын
WhereisZEMBLA woody allen and roman polanski are living proof that hollywood doesn’t care about victims or removing power from abusers. in the wake of harvey weinstein and the me too movement, actresses like meryl streep and kate winslet continue to praise and defend two proven abusers. kirk douglas, who had been accused of raping natalie wood, just received a standing ovation at the golden globes. james franco is being accused (emphasis on accused) of sexual misconduct. this will go away until they announce the oscar nominations with him on the list and then they’ll probably give it to him anyway, depending on whatever facts come to light by then. what sucks is that morally there is no right way to approach this situation. false accusations can ruin someone’s career, so he should remain innocent until proven guilty, but not believing victims results in the enabling of a vicious cycle. it’s complex and shitty for everyone involved
@Alexis_0057 жыл бұрын
He doesn’t deserve it anyway! Yeah sure this is why he won’t win the Oscar and not the fact that he sucks.
@julie1234047 жыл бұрын
WhereisZEMBLA i totally see where you’re coming from and franco’s accusations are definitely not weinstein/spacey’s level! sexual misconduct is (in my opinion) something that you can redeem yourself from, which i think he’ll do. the world will forget because the public generally enjoys james franco, then he’ll probably be nominated at twitter will go crazy with anti-franco stuff, and he’ll still probably win considering the weak film year we’ve had. this story won’t gain the same sort of traction as spacey/weinstein, who will hopefully never work again, because sexual misconduct is not the same as assault/harassment. that’s sorta what i was trying to say when i compared them-i did a terrible job. EDIT: we also have to remember that social networks do not represent most of the general population. taylor swift, for example, is the most hated women on twitter-she just had the highest album first week sales of 2017. donald trump is most hated man on social media-he somehow became our president. bernie sanders was favored by twitter/tumblr, who both have a lot of users-he lost to Hillary. young people, social media users, usually tend to be more progressive than the older population. the academy is a bunch of old people who have probably done a lot worse than Franco. no matter how the Oscars choose to approach this, there will be a huge amount of social media criticism. i want to clarify that i’m not usually in the business of defending people who are accused of this stuff, but i just have a gut feeling about these accusations being more opportunistic than anything. he’s def a little bit of a creepy dude tho, that’s for sure. if more facts come out i will have no trouble dropping james franco from my life LOL

I'm confused as to why some are shocked. Not about Franco(which is not surprising, has overtly flirtatious, not malicious though) but how many. Yes sexual assault happens everyday and many of us have done it and not known. Rather hide, apologize. Now if you raped someone, you need to go to prison, but if you slapped a girls butt or kissed on the cheek without asking, apologize, then change your behavior.

As a woman, regarding "perspectives"...if a guy catcalled or was inappropriate..it was uncomfortable. However, I also knew he wasn't a bad guy (typically), he was just a young guy doing what he thought was ok, I never took it personal. The only prob (90s, my experiences) is when you confronted them & they STILL did it. But for the most we just knew it was about them, not us, and we moved on. My BIGGEST memory in this vein is when a boy in high school kept grabbong at me & the female teacher did nothing. He was just a boy testing his boundaries....but she was an adult meant to establish those boundaries.

I see it simplistically --- if someone feels uncomfortable or violated with what another person does to him/her then the violator should be penalized. In due time this becomes inculcated into the values/culture of the society and the violating behavior is removed/changed. Thanks for sharing your vivid not so pleasant experience.

It’s unfortunate that it’s such a difficult situation to judge. You don’t want to ignore the fact women get hurt. However you don’t also want to ignore the fact that some women have some dark motives. I remember when I was younger a girl made up a rumour about me raping her. We’d never slept together, we hung out at a party and I never spoke to her again. However I heard that she’d been telling people this awful story about me for months/years after the fact. I couldn’t wrap my head around why? To what end does this validate you as a person. What do you gain from this? Sympathy, empathy, a story to tell on a dark and gloomy night... still baffles me to this day. However it passed and although I often see her in the town we live in I try to forget about it... I try to chalk it up to the stupid lies some people tell to make people listen to them... and I walk on by with my head held up.
@Sleviron3 жыл бұрын
you're an idiot for just accepting those rumours. people like her should be in jail... these things are serious and ruin peoples lives more than most rapes would. that word has such impact in the current generation that people rather worry about a rape that was concensual but afterwards it wasn't, more than a murded or a assault that left the victim permanent damaged both physically and mentally. prioritizing like this really shows that humans are scum that never deserved to inherit earth. in my country a guy who stabbed his 2 children and threw them off a balcony got 2 years. while "minor" rapes almost always give double that amount.

Canceling a person just because of some wild allegations?? And they extremely mild.The things i've read are: 1) he pushed a girl in the show "Freaks and geeks" who played his girlfriend when he was 19. It was improv and she touched or slapped his arm in some way and he screamed "Never touch me again" and pushed her. I'll admit its not right but she should've told him beforehand+ maybe he had a traumatic experience? He apologized btw.. 2) he was giving acting lessons and at one point you also have to exercise sex-scenes. Look at Game of Thrones, spartacus or the Wolf of Wall street. Sex is omnipresent and i'm sure most actors have played or will play some sex scenes. The girls he teached (who willingly signed a contract) said afterwards it went beyond the "industry norm". Very unclear but one thing is certain: none of the sex scenes are comfortamble for anyone but if you think it goes too far, you just stop. They didnt say anything but complained afterwards. 3) he directed movies and one had some sex scenes in it (OMG it must be the first movie with nudity). After that they complained the compensation was not worth the work. They signed a contract and were able to work with a very famous actor. 4) he wrote with a 17 year old and invited her to his hotel. A grey area in my eyes because a lot of modern and civilized countries like Germany or France allow men to have relations with girls up to 16 year old. As long as they dont have a special bond like teacher-student or trainer-player. Why should Franco be penalized if she turns 18 in a couple days? I don't think that he did something wrong here 5) some women said he gave them a weird vibe. Like what? Aubrey plaza gives me a weird vibe. Will i spread some false rumors about her? To summarize: Except pushing a girl when he was 19 (who should've consulted him beforehand) HE is the victim of diabolical and twisted women who will say anything to further their "career". No proof, no explanation just nothing. Reminds me of the countless cases where women accuse an innocent man of rape and when the truth comes out they get a slap on the wrist. If I were him I'd film and monitor everything around my house to always have proof, because you can never trust them...

This is coming from a guy who used to really like James Franco and his work, I think it’s weird that people are quick to take the side of an actor who we don’t know at all but superficially like and praise him for his response even though multiple women at that time had already come out against him but are otherwise fine accepting the women’s accusations.

Can we please call out what exactly Sexual Assault is before this becomes a joke. If a man touches you inappropriately and you say. "That's inappropriate dont do that again" and he does it again That's assault. If a man whistles at you and jokingly says "looking good" and walks away and you are like "I gave him no permission to that, That's not a compliment to me" but its a compliment to him! Its perceived differently. You have to understand that. If there is no line drawn in your relationship, someone cannot guess what you may or may not take offence to. Obviously there are default lines everybody knows not to cross but for other instances please speak out. Then there's not of this. "False accusation"..."how were we suppose to know" its a simple "I told him not to and he did it again" even if its as simple as a hug. James thought he had a great relationship with this person and from his perspective it might have been so but she could've found some things he did inappropriate and said nothing at the time. If I had a lets say "flirtatious relationship" with my co worker and she reciprocated it or seemed fine with it. Only for me to find out years later it made her uncomfortable, I would feel terrible but also confused as to why she never brought it up. Speak out ladies. Draw the line. You'll be surprised how many guys perceive thing differently and every women is different. Some dont mind. Some are just as playful, friendly & touchy with both genders. Gotta let people know if something makes you uncomfortable.
@sonicthehedgehog19847 жыл бұрын
stigma oftheripper2 Me : "Obviously there are default lines everybody knows not to cross.." You: "WhaT DruGs ArE yOu oN" And yes there are some guys who think whistling at a women is a compliment because there's not enough women or men in there lives who have this conversation and thought them otherwise so my point is it needs to be addressed instead of people assuming everybody should know the right & wrong way to compliment a women.

Val Kilmer? Sexual harassment can be just saying "damn girl" to a woman on the street. This causes alarm and annoyance. Hence it is criminal sexual harassment. Cry more about that free speech

His body language is not in sync with what his mouth is saying. 0:45 "the ones I read were not accurate" - his head nods yes. Franco already had the "perv" reputation so I don't think the allegations are false. But must also say that some women might be taking it too far. We haven't heard about Ally Sheedy litterally since the Breakfast club and now all of a sudden she brings this to the table right in the middle of James' win and all the stories in Hollywood. The other actresses from his movies too. I mean why did you wait so long to speak out or even accept to work with him if his behavior was disgusting. I only feel half bad for all the Weinstein women and other predator's victims, because as long as it served a purpose and gave them the career and money they were seeking, none of them said anything. They let this go on and on and contributed to other women being abused. Not ok.

That is what is called a true gentleman.. Mr James Franco my respect to you, even if you did it or not that is a separate issue that i am not trying to deny could had occurred or not, what i am recognizing here and applauding from you is the gesture of showing that is ok for this type of news to be public, it is ok to talk about it, what is not ok is jumping on the scandal wagon and scream bloody hell without thinking on the consequences that this allegations will bring not only for the victims and perpetrators but to the innocents at home. It is ok to stop it, as long as there is no more collateral damage. All parts of the story need to be heard in order to have all the details of what happened. Mr. Franco again my respects to you for not jumping on the scandal wagon and for showing the world how a true gentleman answer when he is questioned about his intimacy and love life. Trully your mother and grandmother should be very proud of you sir.

Huge fan of James Franco’s WORK. “This is the End” is one of my favorite movies. We went and saw “Sausage Party” for my bday and I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. Same with Louis CK. Funny, Uber talented guys. But we gotta remember these guys get paid to act like someone they’re not. They’re just people - total strangers to most of us. People who make huge, f’d up mistakes, who can and do use their fame and fortune to influence others.

blake sanchenuss yeah, I think you’re having a reading comprehension issue. Truth does not eventually come. People come to a consensus which is not the same. And by all this comment section the consensus is he is okey actually, and ignoring all the reports, truth is not as easy to find, many times something is true that you will never find any proof for it. People like actor people defend actor till its gone and there is no real aftermath, while continuously spreading fearmongery about false acusations, and how they eventually come for all, this awful women. So that we continue to never believe in the basis of what if Im the next, and keep choosing the consensus of not guilty. It happens even with the ones that are proven guilty, and they will ask "is there no forgiveness.

It's widely known in Hollywood that James Franco is disgusting and predatory. I wanted Seth to really press him, but then again, Seth is a comedian, not a journalist. I wish Seth would have risen more to the occasion, but I also don't know if that's what his role is. He's not Lesley Stahl. He might have done all he reasonably could have.

you do know he was actually caught sexting an underage chick a couple years ago?
@lauragallaher45297 жыл бұрын
Derrick Winding he originally texted her thinking she was an adult, was a month off from being 18, and 17 is the legal age of consent in both her home country of Ireland and in the state they were located, New York. They weren't sexting, just discussing meeting up (but never did) its a bit creepy and power dynamics due to age difference would've been wrong if they had an actual relationship but she wasn't underage, and she was fully consenting of everything they discussed over text, she wasn't hesitant at all
@dman31457 жыл бұрын
Laura Gallaher the fact that u have to state the law for age of consent lol, there is never a reason that a 30+ year old should be texting a 17 year old to meet up lol
@jared18557 жыл бұрын
+Derrick Winding because of an age gap? if she's over consent and gives it then the age doesn't matter just because you're creeped out from an age gap in something you literally have no impact on or matter with.
@Irock24127 жыл бұрын
Derrick Winding yeah, I’m going to have to agree with Laura on this one. She was of legal age and therefore nothing wrong with it. Just because you are offended by the age difference doesn’t mean you’re right.

Based on the actual accusations, he didn't do anything wrong. Nobody accused him of rape, or groping. He asked some actors to remove their tops for a scene inside a strip club. Boohoo, some dumb thots who had coasted their entire lives on their attractiveness realized for the first time that their success wasn't because of their talent.

He eventually admitted having done sexual misconduct with some women, his response here was fair and true enough considering the position he was in at the time, this man loves his work to the point he became a workaholic as his agent said. We all make mistakes and we can admit we did them and apologize for them, doesn't mean we don't deserve a second chance.
