Veteran television and screen actor, James Garner is guest on The 'Charlie Rose' Show during this intimate, detailed career interview in 2002.
James Garner (1928 - 2014) was an American actor and producer. He starred in several television series over more than five decades, including popular roles such as Bret Maverick in the 1950s Western series Maverick and as Jim Rockford in the 1970s private detective show, The Rockford Files. He played leading roles in more than 50 theatrical films, including The Great Escape (1963) with Steve McQueen, Paddy Chayefsky's The Americanization of Emily (1964) with Julie Andrews, Grand Prix (1966), Marlowe (1969), Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969), Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971), The Castaway Cowboy (1974), and with Toshiro Mifune, Blake Edwards's Victor/Victoria (1982) with Julie Andrews, and Murphy's Romance (1985) with Sally Field, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Garner's career and popularity continued through another decade in movies like Space Cowboys (2000) with Clint Eastwood, and The Notebook (2004) with Gena Rowlands. and his tv role as Jim Egan in 8 Simple Rules (2003-2005).
The Charlie Rose Show (PBS/1991-2017) is an American television interview and talk show, with Charlie Rose as executive producer, executive editor, and host. The show was syndicated on PBS until 2017 and is owned by Charlie Rose, Inc. Rose interviewed thinkers, writers, politicians, athletes, entertainers, businesspersons, leaders, scientists, and fellow newsmakers.

My favorite actor of all time…and never a whiff of scandal around this great man. IMO, Rockford Files is the greatest show ever made. RIP, Mr. Garner. ❤️

I had the pleasure of writing James Garner a Western film script, when I worked as an actor/ screenwriter in Hollywood, and he was a joy to behold. Genuine, honest and with a unique way of including you in his life.. Hollywood could take a lesson.

I was just reading his stats. He and my dad were both born in April, 1928, and both were married in 1956. Both were married to one woman. James died in 2014. My dad died in 2020. Both were amazing.

That is the film where I fell in love, so to speak, with Julie Andrews, Her “duets" with Carol Burnet were just a kind of confirmation that she had real “quality”.

Mr. Garner is one of my favourite actors. Every man's anti-hero. Rockford files was at 5:30pm, when I was a kid. Choking down dinner as fast as we could, then rushing to the TV. Worth the heart burn.

I have always been a fan. Great interview. I compare his attitude toward acting lessons to great musicians that cant read a note but great music pours out of their soul.

Garner punched a writer thru a dressing room during the filming of Rockford because of plagiarism. A man's man .

"You regret what you don't do, rather than what you do." Rose stated that after Garner spoke about Laughton's admonition to him. I think the idea fits for an actor, 'playing" a role. However, in the real world, we all have regrets about what we do AND don't do. It's the nature of life, we're never perfect; just doing our best...

What I liked about James as an actor is he always had at least one episode per season where his character made reference to his home state, Oklahoma. RIP Jim

I love this man, he isnpired me as Rockford when I was a teenager. To become a PI. He aged very quickly later on. Not as quick as William Holden but still... Takes nothing away from him if yes: Did he have a drinking problem?

The Honorary Permanent President of Raider Nation! Mr Garner was on the sidelines of Raiders games for many decades. 70s, 80s, 90s, I know for certain. But I bet he started in the 60s and made it at least into the 2000s back at the Oakland Coliseum.

However, he was mistaken on Rambo First Blood, no policemen or national guardsmen were killed…except one, indirectly caused by a helicopter pilot after being hit by a rock flung by Rambo

I agree this interviewer is not so great. He asked Jim a question then interrupts him and gives possible answers. When he asked him what his favorite actors to work with are. He answered his own question, then moves on.

Do you have a copy of the original script? That's how actors choose their roles. They read the script and either accept the role or pass on it. Why do people assume, because they saw the final product, they have any idea of how it started. Films go through many changes between the manuscript and the cutting room floor.
