He didn't realize at the time that people were quite happy to just hear him talk. The stunts and crazy stuff he did was cool, but the best part of the show was always right after the monologue when he'd sit behind the desk and just talk about stuff that was going on. And that was every night. Whenever the interviews didn't go well, it was because the guests were boring and/or a***holes.

I grew up a huge Leno fan, and still am. He is one of the greatest comedians ever. David Letterman is the king though, because he gave more comedians their shot. Also I found out about a dead comedian while tuning into a random Late Show one night. His name is my all time favorite comedian, Bill Hicks.

Interesting to see younger more serious, focussed, buttoned up, ambitious Dave. 10 years later he'd totally relaxed into himself I think. Less and less of the skits, more and more of just him talking, story telling, being 100% himself. By the end of CBS, whether it be age, his heart ops, the infidelity scandals, becoming a Dad.. he was just better at everything and also seemed a much happier and better human being. His Netflix shows are superb.

I remember the scandal, him sleeping with a staff member. I was thinking he wasn't married at the time, so it wouldn't have been infidelity. I'm not telling you you're wrong, I'm probably mistaken myself. I do remember him handling it as well as a person could. Someone tried to blackmail him, instead of trying to pay them to keep it quiet, he immediately went to the authorities and just admitted it. I don't feel he owed anyone an apology except the folks in his personal life that he felt he owed one to. I hate when a celebrity is expected to publicly apologize when something like that happens. I don't care if he's banging a dozen chicks a day, it's none of my business.

It was more or less the same as Charlie Rose got sacked for. Lucky for Dave he outed himself because of the extortion and it was before metoo. What Charlie Rose did was wrong and so embarrassing, sad dirty old man stuff. Especially as he spent so many hours talking about people like Clinton doing exactly the same... what was he thinking ffs?! The world of long form interview is poorer without him but he brought it on himself.

@@TimNelson I watched Charlie Rose every night, and in 2008 or 2009, thereabouts, he appeared on his show with a black eye, cuts and bruises on his face. Like he'd been in a fight. His female producer said at the time that he'd been walking down a NYC street absentmindedly reading his iphone, when he stepped into a pothole, tripped, and fell face first on the pavement. "I can even show you the blood on his phone," she said. I thought 'BS, he was in a fight, but why make up a story'?
