Funny enough, James Gunn just made a post on his insta about Maxwell Lord with comic panels of him and the JLI The caption of the says "Calling Maxwell Lord a villain seems reductionist. As he was originally portrayed in JLI made him on of my favorite characters." Which is pretty interesting.

The fact that Maxwell Lord is in this universe, along with Guy Gardner, possibly Ted Kord if the Blue Beetle movie is canon and Booster Gold makes the possibility of a JLI movie or series an actual possibility and that's honestly some of the most exciting news from the DCU so far like imagine a JLI series but it's literally a sitcom!? kind of like the first few episodes of Wandavision but with a more unified style.

my favourite thing to come out of all these castings is the feeling that the DCU is a world that has already been existing for a relatively long time even in superman legacy. We arent starting superman as the "first superhero of this universe" instead we are getting a universe that feels lived in, feels filled with heros who have already been doing their thing for years at this point. we arent building to a JUSTICELEAGUE TEAM UP MOVIE after a ton of origin stories, it feels more like we are exploring the underdogs of this universe of powerhouses. Honestly i really like this take, and im excited to see how it plays out. Im hesitantly intrigued at the very least

Exactly! And having a new hero who “does everything” pop out of nowhere is a super interesting thing to explore as well. If he does everything and is so powerful, how do the other heroes react? How do they respond? Do they treat him as a rookie drunk on power? Are they fearful of this new all powerful wildcard? So many cool scenarios can be explored and I really do hope they go that route in some way rather than simply tell an origin story

Personally, I would agree, like that threatening but not evil presence that he had in Iron Man 2. Sean Gunn would nail that, almost a nice-guy type of villain, like he seems genuinely personable and happy, but deep down he is filled with this desire for control that leads him to do terrible things.

Max Lord in Supergirl just disappeared after filming moved to Vancouver, so it was never entirely clear where they were taking him, but he was starting to lean more friend than foe? So maybe DC is swinging back to "complicated ally" with Max. Certainly James Gunn had posted "Calling Max a villain is a little reductive." So it'll be neat to see where this goes.

The “evil Max” is in some good stories by some good writers & artists, but I always loved the character in JLI for being multidimensional - same way I loved Waller in Ostrander’s squad. Honestly, the part that scares me right now is that so many characters are being cast and announced for what appears to be a single movie (with future appearances expected)...which makes me fear for that one movie, sounds like it's getting overstuffed. That said, as Nando says, GotG & TSS were solid, so I'm...willing to give Gunn/Superman: Legacy a chance.

I like to think of it like game of thrones personally. The cast is MASSIVE yes, but that doesn’t mean they all get their spotlight immediately in this one film, I bet you 90% of them will only get a little bit of screen time, with the main focus on a handful of characters, all these actors being cast are in preparation for future appearances, and their role in this film is showing that they exist and have existed in the world for x amount of time. And it’s also good to lock down actors for roles that you know Will be explored later, that’s just good planning :D

I kinda hope that they bring him back to being like a heroic believer (kinda like a Coulson-esque fanboy) who assembles the Justice League for the first time and maybe this incarnation will have a roster reflective of both JL international but also the familiar faces you'd expect like Superman Batman Wonder Woman or Aquaman, mostly because I know the writer J.M DeMattius was always extremely dissatisfied with the heel turn of the character in later iterations beyond his original run, and I honestly can imagine James Gunn being a huge fan of that book as well

I feel pretty confident, and I've said it before, that given Gunn's clear love of Grant Morrison it seem like the goal is to have something like the JLI, a 'losers Justice League' if you will existing initially, leading up to the the 'real deal justice league' becomming a thing once Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are all established. I would guess that we'll get a JLI film (not necessarily actually called that) which would work to introduce the trintity to them and make it clear that the JLI aren't up to dealing with the real threats and so the Trinity step in and revamp it, probably by kicking out Maxwell Lord who I imagine will turn out to be corrupt in some way

Or the fact that James Gunn cast his brother in the role? Or is it both reasons? I would assume it's small role. Probably only a background character or cameo. I am unsure where James Gunn said it, but he has said his Suicide Squad movie is not canon to the DCU. The DCU starts when Creature Commandos airs. Everything before is not canon to it. Like, Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle will show up in the DCU, but his movie is not canon in the DCU.
