The fact that toothless in the HTTYD trailer looks EXACTLY as the original, same cartoonish design, same level of photo realism, it's like, what's even the point then? It's baffling to me

Title question: Shareholders, same as Avengers Secret Wars and any other movie (also some of them are good, for instance i think junglebook cinderella and little mermaid have better stories than their originals, aladdin isn't better but it's a fun enough side-move and lilo & stitch has the Marcel-The-Shell guy on it so I'm looking forward to that. We are both too cynical and also the right level of cynical about these)

Why is animation still seen as something to go "beyond"? You realize that before Snow White, people mostly just pointed cameras at things? Do you realize how revolutionary it is for every single frame to be entirely artist-rendered? If you watch an animated film and think, "I wish it were acted out in front of a camera with photorealistic CGI animals," you seriously lack imagination as either an executive or an audience member.

Kind of self-evident, is it not? A lot of these remakes have made enormous amounts of money. That lifeless _Lion King_ remake was technically the highest-grossing animated film of all-time until _Inside Out 2_ thankfully deposed it.

Kind of different, but as a lifelong fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender… I just cannot bring myself to watch the Netflix show. I haven’t heard it’s terrible, I’ve heard it’s okay (mind you, just okay), I just now it’s not going to have the same impact or even close as the same show. Also, for as big a hit as it was, I feel like people stopped talking about it really quickly. Mind you, that’s at least partly because Netflix dumps so much crap that nothing sticks for long, but still.

I think Chris Evans after marvel has not been able to find his footing at all like I remember couple of years ago he had some decent roles and performances……now it seems like he was one of the worst to be hit by post marvel acting syndrome

I prefer animation to live action and the live action versions being primarily being CGI feels so pointless. I'm surprised they didn't do Snow White before getting to New stuff like Aladdin, Little Mermaid and Moana. I really really disliked the new Lion King, especially since they took out Be Prepared, it was so unnecessary and I felt like I wasted my time. Most parents are just going to show their kids the original animated ones as they still hold up and they hold a kids attention more anyway.

Disney could do remakes of Sword in the stone, Black cauldron, Treasure planet and Atlantis. Thoses movies deserved a second chance! Maybe new elements can be add to the story like flash-backs of the Atlantis crew's pasts| childhood or make princess Eilonwi brave and proactive instead of always laughing. Small changes who can make the characters interresting and likable 🙂

My conspiracy theory is that it's Disney's attempt to get teachers and professors to purchase their IP twice. There is a lot of money in the lazy school day market. Disney pays once for the IP and wants us to pay twice (supposing you purchase and not subscribe.)

Thank you! I was technically in high school when HttYD came out, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it (that score was ROBBED at the Oscars). I've seen it enough to know that the scenes from the trailer were shot for shot the same. All I could think was... Why? Like, yeah, those scenes are iconic, but why not do something a little different? Why not make the dragons a little more life like? (The Detective Pikachu comparison is also spot on...I thought they looked so good) I'm not... Mad about this (mostly because John Powell is doing the score again), but I have no incentive to see this movie... Because I already own it and have seen it many times. And I don't think young kids will prefer a live action one anyway.

I think the reason we don’t have more inventive life action remakes is the response from fans. Take Snow White for example, they are taking many creative liberties with movie and the Internet is up in flames over it. But at the same time, you also have people who are angry about live action remakes being one-to-one copies. You just can’t win with live action remakes.

"who are this colored films made for" asked an old man wishing he could go back Black and White movies. "who are this cartoon movies made for" asked a stoopid person thinking cartoons are only for kids "who are this live action remakes for" asked a random KZbinr who thinks he has a say in what different people like and dont and that he is the voice. LET IT GO, you are not the investor, producer or anything related to them, they make movies so people can watch them, same with corn, the fact there is more of it means that the demand is there.. lets leave this type of stoopid questions in 2024... YALL SHOULD GO TO SCHOOL OR SOMETHING.. AS LONG AS THERE IS A DEMAND, NB: movies dont cost as much as you think to make, if they did, the entire movie(hollywood) would have fallen, it is a conspiracy to cut an average man out.

As far as the dragons its really hard to bring a fully animated character who isn't human to live action and keep the essence of the character. Looking at examples where this has famously gone wrong like "live action" lion king, the first draft of sonic, Appa from the ATLA movie the overwhelming audience feedback is to make the characters more cartooney because they look weird as actual animals so I'm not surprised at all by the design of the dragon.

I think the other huge factor that affects these new line of live action remakes is that they remaking 3D animated films and specifically with these there isn’t going to be enough of a separation visually to even have the remake be warranted

All the live action remakes have gone by me: they all look and sound trash - except how to train your dragon: because it looks so faithful to the original, with the original creator/director behind it. I remember watching the live action 101 dalmations and enjoying it but not remembering it: the cartoon was better because it was a cartoon - same goes for lionking and the rest of them: they are animated movies in my mind and making them live action is like seeing a play - theyre different cos they have to be when “performed live” and i think its silly to tell a story differently if theres nothing wrong with how the original was told Updating the graphics was a great shout - imagine they did that with all the animated films (faithfully) so kids could enjoy the beloved films instead of being put off by the aged animation - now that would be amazing. But changing the story for the sake of it being different sounds like a selfish take: you want something different because otherwise why bother making another one right? Thats exactly why i dont watch the remakes because they’re telling the “same” story but its not the same - its “updated” and at the moment disney have a habit of changing things to make a point and it takes away from the original story that had such important meaning - like the prince not killing ursela at the end; men just get sidelined instead of championed along side women and im tired of being a guy in a world where hating men is so okay - disney really fucked us guys over and i’m rather sick of it 🤷♂️ Rah. Rant haha

It's insulting to the medium of animation. It's basically "let's take this kiddie movie (animated) and turn it into a REAL movie (live action)" and that is how many of today's kids think about it. Completely different than just re-adapting the source material. Consider the completely different discourse back in the 2010s when all those Snow White movies were getting made. People might not have liked any specific movie, but they were all new takes on the story, not just trying to "update" an existing one.

The way I see it the draw of a remake is sorta like going to see a play you like by multiple different theater companies you know the overall plot but the fun is in seeing the different interpretations and the fun of seeing different actors takes on the roles

I’m still not over the loss of 2-D hand drawn animation. I love Moana the live-action remake is not for me, but if you’re going to put The Rock in there as Maui, it makes no sense not to bring back Auli’i Cravalho to play Moana.
