The trailer evokes a different feeling from the past few years superhero movies, and it’s that it’s not ashamed to be itself. There’s no awkward, self-deprecating humor. It knows it’s fantastical, and the movie seems to be embracing it. I just felt awe and hope upon first watching it, like the Superman of old. I really liked the trailer. Made me smile. This coming from the biggest MOS/Synder/Cavill meat rider. I’m optimistic but also a little pessimistic. Everyone’s complaining about the suit, trunks, teal colours or bad colour grading and unfinished effects or too many characters. No none of that. It just looks and feels too familiar. In a strange way I feel like I’ve watched it already. Like I know what to expect. A few shots were too similar to MOS. It kept reminding me of MOS and a little bit of Superman Returns. Despite the addition of new heroes joining the fray and the introduction to Krypto this feels like a retread. A compilation of all the best parts of previous Superman works but this could be its downfall.

THIS is what Superman is supposed to be: a symbol of hope. He can be goofy and sort of campy at times, but that’s what makes him so endearing. If he didn’t have the powers of a god he’d be an everyman. The immense power he possesses never corrupts him and he stays true to himself. I’ve seen people saying, “It’s corny.” GOOD. It should be. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see a Superman that smiles again instead of being depressed and frowning all the time. We live in a time where the whole “evil Superman” trope is played out imo. We have Homelander in The Boys, Omni Man in Invincible, Superman himself in the Injustice games, etc. Even Cavill’s Superman was conflicted and unsure of himself most of the time. We never really got to see the “Boy Scout” side of him in the Snyderverse, and based on what I’ve seen from this trailer, Gunn is finally giving us a feel good Superman movie. It’s long overdue, the character hasn’t felt like this in a film since the Christopher Reeves days probably.
