In this video I show you how I made my portable sketch easel inspired by James Gurney.
This is an easy how to video. I describe, step by step, how I made my easel and what materials I used.

Just discovered your channel after watching a review of a carving knife on another channel. You’re Rooster carving video popped up. Needless to say, here I am, still on your channel after subscribing. I’ve watched you carve a rooster, paint a dragon and make an easel. Apparently I’m having a binge fest on a bunch of your past videos. Love your content and your concise instructions 👍

Thank you for sharing an easy, affordable DO IT YOURSELF plein aire work station for watercolor using a minimum of tools and supplies that most people have on hand and can readily find at any local hardware store.

omg thank you for this video! I was making my own and had no idea what tool i needed to set in the t-nut so i just resorted to carving a little mote for the T part of the nut. Also drilling into the plastic hinge wasn't something i thought about to make the easel close shut lol i wish i had known that earlier before buying hinges that has the tension screws on the sides

You did a great job and your video is very clear and easy to understand. I also made a James Gurney sketch easel. The only difference is I drilled a hole in my easel which is big enough for me to drop a silicone water cup into it. So that my water is recessed and I don’t have to work around a protruding water cup. So I just pop in my collapsable cup when I start painting. I also did not do a nice job drilling those holes for the magnets because I used quarter inch plywood which makes my pallet very very light. But not deep enough to embed the magnets. So I used little stick on magnets that I got from Home Depot. And they hold very well.

That sounds great. I thought about making a hole for the water cup, but wasn't sure about the placement I wanted. The water cup is small enough that it hasn't bothered me and it is easy enough to change the water. In time I might do what you did and be brave enough to drill a hole for a cup. Thanks for watching, and for the comment. Happy painting.

Great video, I too want my own field easel and the prices out there are terrible for what is offered. YOU ARE correct it is a simple design. Anyone can make their own if the already have a tripod sitting around 😊

Looks super easy, thank you for sharing. Now, if only I could find some super nice friend who could cut some wood for me.... By the way, may I ask where you found those cute little cups that stack so well?

I got the cups from the dollar store. They come in a set of three. Lol, If you don't have a super nice friend with a table saw, you can always buy wood and get it cut at big box hardware store. Thanks for watching!

@@LaurasArtBasement Thank you very much. I'll take a look, they seem very handy for all sorts of things. And yes, I think I might go to a hardware store and have them cut the wood instead.

What size pieces of wood did you use?
@LaurasArtBasement
@LaurasArtBasement Жыл бұрын
My wood was 14" x 11 1/2" and 5/8" thick to start, so when cut the two pieces are 11 !/2" x 7". But like I said in the video that is just the size of wood I had on hand. You can do this with any size that fits your needs. Thanks for watching.
