James was friends with Charlie Crockett. He stared in Crocketts’ “That’s how I got to Memphis” video. This night he told a joke to the crowed that he shared with Crockett without mentioning Crockett’s name. He said that he had a friend who was popular in the country music business that got bad news that day. He was told that he had to cancel his concerts because crowds of 500 people or greater were not allowed to gather. James went on to say, “I must be the luckiest man alive because that’s not going to affect me at my concerts.” James informed me that Charlie Crockett asked him to go on tour in Texas with him. He gave it some thought and decided that he was going to go. He asked if I would like to travel with him to some of his shows. He was excited about the opportunity. My girlfriend and I were excited for him and looking forward to it. We traveled with him to many of his shows and always enjoyed his company. He was a truly close friend, but more than that, he was a Pal. I called him a friend once and he responded, “Let me tell you something. Don’t ever call me a friend again. From now on it’s Pals. Pals are closer than friends. Your my Pal.” We miss you Pal. Love you always and forever. There will never be another James Hand. You were the real deal.
