My boyfriend gifted me 'The Thought of the Heart and the Soul of the World' when I was battling cancer. Hillman gave me back my sight and my voice when empirical psychology could not. May he rest...

James Hillman is formidable. I had the pleasure to meet him briefly at a conference at Pacifica. His thoughts and ideas are challenging, but I always gain something important from them. I am so grateful for his contributions.

It's pretty ironic that the company that produced this video no longer offers it on their website, but have hundreds of training videos of just the kind of reductive, soulless, cognitive-based psychology that Hillman despised.

The interview took place at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA, where James Hillman was also on faculty. The interview misnamed the school by accident, or lapsus as "Pacifica Graduate School".

Yes. That’s why I dropped psychology from my requirements years ago in college. The only part I wrote and studied was Gestalt. Jung was not regarded as viable fodder to munch on in those days.

It`s because the medical establishment seems trained not to question root causes these days,probably cause there is no profit to be made in actually healing a disorder and you need to know the root cause before you can heal.

Perhaps it should be obvious that what politicians do is no measure of how psychologically astute the society is, nor is it a measure of how nice a politician's parents were or any such factor. Governments naturally grow and seek ever more power. Too many psychologists and social thinkers equate government with society. They talk about what "we" do, but "we" the people, in every nation, have very little say or control of what politicians do. People who have power will always abuse power. The problem is with power itself.
@clinttaylor15164 жыл бұрын
Michael Damian However, in America, the voters DO have the power, at least theoretically, to determine the course our government takes by who gets voted in or out. So the psyche of each citizen is essential to be engaged in this process. Hillman was highly critical of how so much of modern psychotherapy exteriorized the problems of people, rather than as being a part of a “ sick “ culture. He called for a radical revolution, or at least revision of the psychotherapy industry in the West. See his seminal work “ ReVisioning Psychology “.

@suddenlyitsobvious Hello. You seem to have a considerable animus against Dr. Hillman. Have you read any of his work? I will admit that this video hardly presents very much of the substance to be found therein. And it would perhaps be unfair to expect any kind of in-depth recapitulation of a decades-long engagement with psyche and its pathology from a 7 minute video interview.

I don't feel like it is necessary to viscously tarnish his 'reputation' as afigure in psychology,even if your generalization about the commenters on this video are true. People interested in his kind of thing willingly accept what you call inflated discourse just like they will certainly ignore certain aspects of factual science. But that's why Im not convinced by your generalizations of anything.
