I had the honor of playing bass behind the drummer on this album, Billy 'stix' Nicks. I played in a Motown group with him for almost 10 years until he past away at 83. The drum kit he played on this album and toured with Jr, sat in my rehearsal space for years.

One of the most creative and rhythmic bassist of all time. A hero to so many of use and someone whose style I try to emulate to the best of my ability. These recordings are great, I have a 63 Precision at home and it sounds just like the one James plays...too bad my fingers don't sound the like the ones James had!

Paul said he just wanted to play like James! And James wanted to play like Charles Mingus! All bass players who want to be good need to understand that this is how a bass needs to be played, not the one note every measure way that is popular today.

It said that Jr. Walker got his name from his family and friends. He was called Junior by his stepfather, and Walker by his friends because he didn't have a bicycle as a youngster so he did all of his errands by feet. So upon entering show business Autry DeWalt Mixon didn't quite have a catch so he decided to put together the name Jr. Walker and it caught on.

YIKES! This remix you did makes me appreciate this song way more than I ever did. You really highlight everything that's happening on this song. I think had Motown put it out like this, it really would have sailed high on the charts. It's so complex, with the two drums slaughtering it out like dueling gunfighers (I always knew there were two, but your mix REALLY clarifies it) the 3 guitars slashing the groove and of course, JAMES. What on earth can you say about James' unbelievable gift on that bass? Thank man, for putting it out there! (P.S. If you don't have a vid for "Mutiny" the bass line on that will put you away.)

Now THAT is straight up profound. His contribution to the world is virtually limitless. Jamerson gave us all the rhythmic power AND all the melodic content we could ever dream of, and then some. The power of his soul is with us, even now.......

The guitar work here is extraordinary! The Oreo Cookie Section was always spot on! If anyone knows for sure, please let us know, but I think it’s Joe Messina in the left, Robert White on the right, and Eddie Willis in the middle. I think there might even be a fourth guitar on here. If so, The All Stars’ Willie Woods perhaps?

This guy plays bass like 67Stu plays piano. He also played upright bass, by the way. He gets good credit in "Standing in the Shadows of Motown"
@GeorgiaBoy19614 жыл бұрын
67Stu: With you all the way... the guitarists for Motown, the guys you mentioned plus maybe a few others later on, were so good at doing what the song needed, blending with the other instruments and weaving together cohesive, yet funky parts. Just their guitars with Jamerson and the drummer, sounds fabulous all by itself. Speaking of Junior Walker and the All-Stars, I was lucky enough to see/hear Junior and even shake his hand after the show, not all that many years before his untimely passing. What an incredible performer and a fine gentleman as well. Everyone in that joint was getting loose and getting down when he played....

Hi Ludsonio I just was turned on to the movie DVD Standing in the shadows of Motown. I heard it's been out two years...but it is an awesome documentary/movie about how Jamerson and other men WERE the sound behind Motown and not Berry Gordy and they became known as the Funk Brothers..and going on tour...a few of them are deceased such as jamerson, but the others are still getting down.

My dad got this album in 1968-69 , when he bought a gram from the RACS in Tooting! Not sure if the album was thrown in? Point I am trying to make is that I didn't know that JJ was the bassist. I just assumed that JR Walker had his own group (The All Stars) and he had his own bassist)! Shows how much I don't know!!
@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles7 жыл бұрын
Jr. actually did have his own band, but as was pretty routine back then, Motown and other record companies would sometimes substitute professional studio players for actual group members. Quicker to record that way, and the producer gets more of the "Hot Sound" he's looking for. Once your ears get educated, you'll be able to figure when it's the All Stars on a track and The Funk Brothers. This one is so Wicked Good, with two drummers attacking the beat, those insane guitar licks from about 3 players and of course, the UNHOLY bass line that could only come from James, you know instantly it's the Funks.

The drummer on this track is Billy 'stix' Nicks, founding member of the Rhythm Rockers... who went along to become Jr walker and the All-Stars. I had the privilege of playing bass with Billy the last 7 years of his life. He recorded several times with Jamerson. Billy had great stories of Motown Studios and touring with many Motown acts... so good to hear this track
@bradleyscarton39313 жыл бұрын
I believe there is a second drummer on this most likely Uriel Jones.

heard from an OOG (note the two O's....he's about 90) ex-tour manager that James Brown had a standing offer to any of the Motown Funk Brothers to join The James Brown Orchestra. But the Funks stayed put in Detroit because, despite offering a big raise over JBs existing band members and because of Brown's autocratic, impulsive ways, Berry Gordy still paid them much more as independent contractors...meaning they could tip over to do songs on other labels ("Cool Jerk," "Agent OO Soul") in Detroit's wide-open music scene.
@teebee4045 жыл бұрын
You know Barry Gordy was the one who formed Motown giving him his props for that. But not for the Motown sound that alone goes to God for giving such awesome talent to the funk brothers especially James Jameson n the rest of the funk brothers Barry should have acknowledged them in Motown 25 that's why I'm still quite upset with him I don't think I can forgive him for that 😣😣😣

Right, God gave them the talent. Nothing to do with the thousands of hours spent practicing, playing in sweaty bars, honing their skills. All this "God given talent" bullshit disrespects all the hard work, dedication and sacrifice every great artist or athelete makes to master their discipline.

@@runcibusarse-weasel964 - How right you are. Jamerson was born with the aptitude to be a great musician, but it is hard work, drive and dedication to his art and craft which made him what he became. The greatest ones, they all make it look so easy and effortless, which is maybe where people go wrong in saying those kinds of things.
