James Joyce, the famous Irish novelist and poet, was born in 1882 in Dublin. He was a member of Ireland's revolutionary generation, born the same year as Éamon de Valera, a leader of the 1916 Easter Rising. While Joyce did not directly participate in the political revolution, he brought about a significant cultural revolution through his modernist writings like Ulysses, which was seen by some Irish revolutionaries as an "eloquent prologue to the Irish revolution".

The Sisters is a short story in Dubliners. The Rainbow and Women in Love were originally planned as one book called The Sisters or Wedding Ring but that one book doesn't exist. It's published as two books.
