I get the wanting to hear Kermode's opinions specifically on these films but bitching about the stand in presenters everytime Kermode goes on holiday is getting really tiresome. James King is a fine film critic, leave him be.

Really REALLY wanted Mark to review this

You know what, Kermode isn't there because it was out during school holidays. Don't know if you've noticed but Kermode and Mayo have negotiated contracts where they don't have to work during these times, probably so they can spend time with family. For one, I'm happy for them to keep doing it.

I absolutely, LOVED IT. Not only was it thoroughly mesmerising, it felt like such a fresh, innovative way to tell a story such as this, set inside the complexities of theatre, in a completely ORIGINAL way, which literally happens with 1 in every 500 movies we see at the movies. People who go and watch Taken 3 instead of this are actually committing a crime to themselves!

A masterpiece of a movie ... Stella cast ... Excellent performances ... And sublime cinematography ... A must see !!

Pros: Sanjeev Bhaskar reading out my comment at 4:20 (wheey), Birdman being probably the best film of 2014 Cons: where the heck are Kermode and Mayo? missing out on one of the films of the year yet again...James King does the most middle-of-the-road reviews

Kermode you cannot leave when such a promising film like Birdman is screening! You can leave whenever Pudsey 3 or Nativity 23 is playing...

Close to unsubscribing from this channel because it seems James King reviews all the important movies. I subscribed for Kermode. If he's on holiday why desn't he just review the films when he gets back?

Well, that was interesting. Even if it doesn't work, Birdman is consistently interesting even if it isn't a masterpiece like some are saying. It's terrifically acted, very confident, very well acted, pretty funny, pretty interesting, and a little messy. Michael Keaton does, however, live up to his own hype for his performance and it's refreshing to see Emma Stone utilize her more sarcastic and realistic persona here; she's really great. I appreciate and enjoy Edward Norton's self-deprecating attitude as his obnoxious character fits in with the film's meta humor. I do feel like they could have done more with their meta tone since there seem to be a few missed opportunities regarding possible jabs at show business. The movie itself is kind of messy, but never distractingly so. González Iñárritu's direction maintains a lightness about it, and it kind of reminds me of Wes Anderson lite or something specifically in terms of awkward and physical humor. I wouldn't call this one of the best of the year, but it's still really solid regardless. 8.3/10, one thumb up, really good, definitely above average, etc.

Great that James reviewed this instead of Mark since it's one of my favourite films this year. Mark Kermode should really be reviewing films more genuinely and on-topic. James King reviews films a lot like Roger Ebert.

Kermode will probably hate it. He doesn't particularly like the director. I on the other hand think the guy is a genius and can't wait to see it.

I love Emma Stone. Can´t wait for this film. There are 3 films from 2014 I have yet to see cause I live in Europe and I can´t wait: this one, Wiplash, and The Imitation Game.

Long takes where it's difficult to see the cuts? This movie sounds a bit like Children of Men, which had an amazing 25 minute long scene near the end.

I have no interest in anything King (very boringly, drone drone drone) has to say about anything. So dull. So, so dull.
