The MG ZT-T has become a stalwart of the DriveTribe channel, but that didn't stop James May having his way with it. While backing his Tesla Model S into a parking space, he managed to prang the MG with the Tesla's front bumper. Mike has brought the car to The Smallest Cog to sort out the scratches, as well as the odd other problem here and there.
The DriveTribe MG ZT-T is now for sale here: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325074504195

Let me tell you a story about the parking sensors, Astra K ones to be exact. We had more than a few of them in our rent a car fleet, so often we would have to move them from one parking spot to another. And yeah, you never put the seat belt on for moving the car 20 meters in a parking lot, but then seat belt alarm would go off, and in their infinite wisdom Opel/Vauxhall engineers decided that once seatbelt alarm started to beep, parking sensors didn't need to beep anymore... Well do I need to go on?

The electric door switch removal reminds me of my Rover. It was not the upgraded version, so it had manual handles. But as with all rovers, and as with the video, everything was easy to disassemble, even without tools... ... so my mates took the whole thing apart as we drove, and for a laugh threw the parts out the window. I never got anywhere without 2 journeys. 1 there, and 1 to pick all the bits back up...

@@DeathEgg666 Against USA Import constraints and laws. Several imported north of the border over in Canada. Including one owner I sometimes correspond with. You'll need to wait a few more years for that twenty five year time constraint to take effect. Even so, some stateside enthusiasts have got their hands on some including some with V8 Mustang power. Writing as a serial MG ZT owner, you missed out over there in the States. The1.8T version is regarded by many owners as the best engine option in the range. Yes better than the various V6 Lumps and specs and even the 75s/ZTs fitted with the BMW Oil Burner Lump. One exception, the mere 800 odd fitted with a Ford V8 Mustang Lump. Found that difficult to believe until I bought the first of several ZT 1.8Ts ten years ago. Now my actual hands on experience shows I was wrong about the best engine options. Check out "furious driving's" "Rover 75 1.8 Turbo Goes for a Drive" on YT. Driving the 1.8T from about twenty minutes in. He was surprised by how the 1.8 Turbo version goes and he has much experience of all many of cars. He's not wrong and one of the very many who like me, were equally surprised when they first got to drive the 1.8T versions of these fine old cars.

I think the only sensor you should have for reversing is a reversing camera, but with a fisheye lens which not only allows you to see a much wider view (ie. So you can see further to each side) but makes it harder to solely rely on it which forces you to use your mirrors and actually check properly. I'm glad my car comes with the noise sensors activated by a button, I never use them cause I find them useless. Guaranteed James was ignoring the sensors because of the amount of times they'll go crazy when there's absolutely nothing there

What I learned from this video: In UK you signal "into" a roundabout before exiting. At least if ex-The Stig does it correctly as I assume he does. Here in Finland you only signal when exiting (because until that you just follow the road; there is nowhere to turn to towards the middle of the roundabout, unless of course there are multiple lanes). Maybe this explains some wrong-signalling drivers in Finland...

Same happened to me. Last customer of the day came to front desk asking "who's red Mazda is this?" I told him it's mine. So he just replied "I just damaged it". Went outside to check, and he reversed his Tesla model 3 into my front bumper. My car was the only one on this side of car park. There was enough space for few trucks there. My front bumper came off and I was left with deep scratches. Soul Red is beautiful Mazda colour, but none of the paint shops wanted to take care of the repair due to complicated paint process.

It's a small comfort that at least the guy didn't drive off without confessing.

Except I suspect this was all set up so they could get the mg into the workshop and fix it up and of course make this video. They manufactured an excuse.

I'd buy it just because you guys drove it and May hit it :) *I love driving my vintage shooting brake, its got a small block 283 V8 in it and she gets up fast. I'd love for her to get work done at smallest cog!! They're the best!

Passenger side front fog light looks like it's on the way out! You could get a decal made up - an arrow pointing to the scratch with "Capt Slow did this!" 😃

THe way you treated the sratches was like my little old ST. Got every scratch out the second I noticed it, except one. My rear quarter was scratched by a Rhino headbutting my break light, at Wobourn Safari park. And with video proof. So I left it out of pride and humour.

Great video and respect for the the old Rover. I'm surprised it didn't write off the Tesla, doesn't take much.

Those tyres had a lot of life left in them if you wouldn't have run them with too low pressure at the track. Get a IR thermometer next time and check tyre temps outside, inside, center. They should be uniform across all three. If the center's too hot, lower your pressure, outside's too hot, raise it.

Surely with the build quality of a Tesla he wouldn't notice the damage that much.
