It was also Dan Gurney (not Ken Miles) who did the fastest lap in the race, and also in qualifying for that matter. In 1967 Gurney came back to LeMans and won it in great style and managed a (then) record 388 laps compared to the 360 laps of the winners in 1966. Miles inherited the lead when Gurney's radiator started leaking. The movie completely omits this part. Never heard of Ken Miles till I watched this movie. What a beautiful story and American triumph. Well done by all literally everyone involved in making this. Made me proud to be an American again and reignited my hatred for Ford.
@Loulovesspeed3 жыл бұрын
If you are truly proud to be an American, then you should try reading the truth as to what transpired in that famous finish line fiasco. It was the governing body, The A.C.O. that screwed Miles - not Ford. While you can take issue with Ford's idea for the 3 car finish, they were smart enough to get approval from the ACO before proceeding with it. The ACO initially said "no problem". Unfortunately, they changed their mind at the end of the race, and that is what screwed Miles out of his deserved win. Put the blame where it belongs!

Not Miles, not Shelby. Phil Remington was the true innovator and mind behind the GT40 program. Nobody did more for this program than Phil.
@redwankabir85064 жыл бұрын
It was miles and Shelby who made the car go faster it had a shelby engine and Miles made it go faster.
@Loulovesspeed4 жыл бұрын
@Redwan Kabir - Actually, the GT40 didn't have a "Shelby" engine as you say, but rather a NASCAR engine that was slightly de tuned and reworked for endurance racing by the other major contributor to the car's success - Holman-Moody.
@dohcsmr11754 жыл бұрын
Loulovesspeed The MkII and MkIIII did have a NASCAR type of motor that was detuned. It was an Aluminum block and heads. The NASCAR motor was iron. Phil Remington was in the wind tunnel 3 months before the 67 LeMans race making changes to the MkIIII body and developed the brake change system of replacing the disk and calipers in a minute and a half. Yes Miles did most of the testing and recognized what needed to be changed but it was Rems fabrication skills and talents that made the GT40 program successful. Ford vs Ferrari is a good movie. It just is not about racing as much as the Ford Machine and how Miles was robbed of the triple crown of endurance racing. All Shelby engines were basic American hot rod motors. This is what makes this story so interesting. A bunch of hot Rod mechanics took a car that was basically hacked by the British, given to Shelby and his hot rod crew, completely rebuilt it and won the 24 hour of LeMans 66 and 67.

@Dohc SMR - Thanks, but I already knew that! Actually, it had aluminum heads but a cast iron block.

Nice to see someone giving Remington his due. I've a second cousin that is married to Phil's only daughter, Kati. Sadly, I never met Phil, but I've been in his home, and I made it to his huge Memorial Service at the Riverside International Raceway Museum. Talk about a who's who of motorsport folks in attendance.

Christian Bale was anything but under rated in the movie. Virtually all the comments I've read agreed he did an outstanding job as Ken Miles. Miles' own son, Peter, spent a good deal of time on the set coaching Bale on his father's style.

@@75aces97 - Exactly right! Enzo, for reasons only known to him, did not attend races in which his cars were entered outside of Italy. Hollywood is Hollywood, and all movie makers create, distort or outright change events purely to draw as big an audience as possible. It disturbs me that so many, particularly young people, believe 100% of whatever they see in a movie as fact! That's downright scary when you think of the ramifications involving that error in thinking!

@Pulsonar4 жыл бұрын
Bruce McLaren drove the #2 GT40 car in NZ colours (black/white stripes), he was a prodigious driver, engineer and businessman, but also a Ford 'YES' man. 1966 was also McLarens inaugural year as a F1 constructor, but it was a disaster. This LM '66 'win' was the best thing to happen to McLaren that year at his 6th Le Mans attempt (3rd attempt with Ford). He was quoted as having no regrets about this win that cost Ken Miles the unprecedented triple crown, a driver he knew well and shared drives with at LM '65 and others. McLaren was more complicit in Fords PR and political scheming at LM '66 than I first realised, his sucking up to Ford also helped keep his McLaren F1 team business alive.

He brought me up on Hondas as well, so I've got an S2000 and an '18 NSX pictured left. There's two cars in the Ford lineup I'd have in their place: new GT500 and GT.......the 350R is kinda cool too. I was never into racing and did not look up the events of the race before watching the film. Having said that, the ending of this film has got to be one of the most heart wrenching endings of any film I've ever seen. Just knowing that the douchbags that ran Ford got all the credit despite trying to stop Miles/Shelby at every turn (pun not intended lol) totally kills me. I did actually love the film though and think Christian Bale's performance here was an all out masterpiece of acting. It would have been interesting to see who would have won had both the Ferrari cars still been on the road to finish the race.
