Good heavens. I live in Dallas and had relatives on Grand Lake up by Miami. Dove the road between monthly for years and years. The fact JM constructed this musically and put in so many CORRECt details is astonishing. I heard it when he first wrote & performed it. Back in the day he frequently played around Dallas, coming down from the bookstore every so often. I didn’t realize that someone was talking about Baxter Springs (John’s Ice House RIP)Lake Eufala living, the McDonalds over the interstate up by Vinita, and of course Choctaw. People that know me have wondered how I could be so passionate about music. I can direct them to ANY rendition of this and then ask ‘now do you understand?”

This is actually one of the best vids of McMurtry singing this. I've seen him with his whole band, but he's really smokin here. Guitar, words, expression.

Fuckin' aye. One helluva songwriter, and this just shows he's one helluva picker too.

I can't help but wonder if James' daddy Larry was proud of his son's witty crafty lyrics or was he like what the hey does that all mean?! I love James BTW!

What exactly is he playing here? Looks a bit like D shape capo'd at 2, and in drop d. Trying to nail down the base chord shape he's playing and riffing from but I can't quite get it.
@maxgang4 жыл бұрын
more than a drop D, its straight open D tuning I suspect - all As and Ds then capo'd
@seejay604 жыл бұрын
Just Drop D with capo at 2nd fret. The 12 string is what gives it such an ambient open tuning sound. That and his great riffing around using open strings.
