The problem is that lying politicians has become the new norm. NO politicians should be held to a higher standard, not lower. If politicians can't police themselves then it should be done by others. People with real powers to punish wrongdoing in the commons, the lords and local authorities.

According to the Home Office: "To claim asylum in the UK, a person must be physically in the UK. It is not possible to apply from outside the country, and there is no asylum visa. A person cannot obtain a visa with the explicit purpose of seeking asylum." Can anyone explain how someone can possibly claim asylum in the UK without being an illegal immigrant?

The seeking of asylum, from the point of view of the person applying for it, is predicated on their perception of needing it rather than their capacity to travel freely.

@@1972hermanoben According to the 1951 Refugee Convention, which UK is signed up to, it is not illegal for asylum seekers to arrive by irregular means in order to claim asylum. Since the government has stopped most 'legal routes' for entering the country, people arriving on small boats are using 'irregular means". So they aren't actually illegal immigrants at all.

My understanding is that under International Law a person can be detained for entering a country illegally however their status under law cannot be legal or illegal until they have been processed and their status confirmed . Until then technically they are not illegal

We’ve allowed greed to be more important than human life. The fact that 0.1% own more than the bottom 90% speaks volumes for our society. We need HUGE tax reforms. Cisswood House near Horsham is a very luxurious hotel. It has been refitted and filled with asylum seekers. It’s still extremely comfortable. They mingle outside my house 100 yards from it. There’s nothing here. There are no other services here. None of them speak English. What is the thinking behind this?

I've met Alex Chalk and admired him as a lawyer. What a shame that he's using his considerable skills in this way, defending barbaric policies instead of simply getting on and processing claims efficiently, so that those with a right to be here can start contributing (we have a LOT of job vacancies they could help to fill) and those with no right to be here can be sent home. It seems his ambition to climb the slippery pole outweighs his humanity.

@@trytellingthetruth.2068 If you'd bothered to read what I wrote, they can contribute by taking some of the jobs employers are desperate to fill. That means they will pay taxes. In fact, they will pay more taxes than natives doing the same jobs as them because of the NHS surcharge. An immigrant doing the same job as you will actually be contributing more to this country than you do.

@@trytellingthetruth.2068 If the government would do the decent thing and get their applications for asylum processed they could be working and contributing to society instead of getting their £9.58 a head that they receive now if they are in a hostel or hotel that provides food. It's about five times more than that if they buy their own food. There are such gaping holes in the care industry and in hospitality that many thousands would instanty find employment and pay tax. Who knows, some asylum seekers may even have skills that we despearately need . As there are now around 550,000 people leaving the UK every year, taking their skills with them, we need everyone we can get or the economy will continue to shrink.

Corbyn slashed tories' majority in the 2017 election. Granted he didn't win, but it forced Theresa May to run crying to the DUP for help with a bribe. Forget about 2019, which wasn't a typical general election. It was more an EU referendum MK2. " Get brexit done" was all we heard from Johnson. Corbyn would wipe the deck with the Tories right now, given the state this country is in.

Despite our barely having nodded hello in the short time they had been here, they immediately dropped a note through my door with their telephone number and all their names on it in case we needed any help, or just someone to talk to, when we were shielding during the Pandemic. (None of my "friends" even thought to ring me.) Since then, they've enriched our lives. A street full of immigrants would be very welcome. I'm sure James would agree.

Absolutely it just serves to demonise them. Like the assumption that they are uneducated and looking for economic advantage. Among the refugees there are doctors, lawyers, academics who have been forced to flee their country. Certainly the numbers seem to some as unacceptable but are well below in comparison with the numbers that Turkey, Germany, Spain and France accept. Last year in total in the EU 965,665 people claimed asylum. Instead of empathy they are happily blamed for underinvestment by successive governments going back to the 1980’s in areas such as housing, Healthcare, Infrastructure, education. The fact that people actually believe it is staggering

These hotels havent taken government contracts out of the goodness of their hearts. They have clearly signed up to deals which GUARANTEE them more than they were making in the normal commercial market. Its another con. These hotels would all have been failing businesses because of Brexit, Covid and the cost of living crisis so a wee government bail out to house asylum seekers is lovely all round. And it still allows the Tories to paint a picture that immigrants are having a wonderful time. We are being taken for mugs at every turn and it suits those horrible 30p types to be able to put it in a neat and tidy wee box and blame immigrants.

If these hotels really are 4 star rated, it implies they must be keeping the bar, restuarant, kitchen, reception and cleaning services all fully staffed, not just bouncers on the door, otherwise they are 0 star non-hotels..
