Braverman is such a paradox. Essentially she's saying "If we had implemented my plan 50 years ago, you wouldn't have me inflicted on you now!" Yet if that is what she believes, shouldn't she say it? Like it or not, she IS British. And as a British politician who's first loyalty lies to British people (of all races) shouldn't she speak out if she believes that immigration has done damage to our country? It's certainly what millions of voters think. Based upon their own, personal lived experience of life in the UK.

@@paulroberts7544 What does it mean to be "British"? Asking genuinely, not being sarcastic. If one is to excldue the 'others', one need to define onself. What is that 'self', in 'being British'? It cannot be skin color, because Braverman is pretty British. Is she British because she grew up there? If so, by definition no first generation immigrant can be British. Is it culture? If so, what does that mean? What do 'British values' mean? (Obviously, the associated question is whether someone who says 'they will dilute us' can be 'British'.) Am genuinely wondering if the people who say these things know what they are on about, they don't care, or they know exactly what they are on about but choose to use confusing language to, well, confuse.

The dog-whistles don't work for the thickest voters - those dim enough to be motivated by lies tend to need them spelled out very carefully first - and that's exactly who the Tories want. They want to ensure their voters lack critical thinking or analysis skills, or the ability to research a claim. So now they've got to tread the tightrope of attracting those people while relying on the 'politeness' of the UK media, who are too reticent to call a lie a lie when it comes from a minister's mouth.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think more than 27% don't really follow the news all that closely. Might get a general sense of the news but filtered through social media or read the headlines but go no further. The only people who pay serious attention to the news aren't all interested in being more informed. So if you have followed the story about the non existent meat tax you're already in the minority. Then within that number some will look deeper and challenge themselves to find out more but a percentage will just process it using confirmation bias. Or even if they don't it just adds to a sort of general sense of the parties. "Tories are more pro meat than anymore else and I like meat.". It's highly unlikely anyone on the fence or interested in changing their minds are going to be following up on bits and pieces they already don't think are important.
