Just an observation. 3 points people constantly criticise O'Brien on in the comments. 1. He interrupts the caller. Most of the time O'Brien does this because the caller starts the argument by saying something that isn't true. So O'Brien stops them before they carry on. For example if I was to say: "Everybody knows the moon is made of cheese, so because of that I think...." There's no point allowing the person to continue as the rest of the sentance is irrelevant. The usual responds he gets is "You're not letting me finish!" or "Says who, I don't believe that" or "MSM blah blah" 2. He asks his callers to explane what they mean. An example of this is, there was a caller who rang up to say "Jeremy Corbyn is a cultural marxist". O'Brien stopped him to ask what do you mean. The caller got very angry. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask someone what they mean with the words THEY choose to use. If you want to understand their POV then you need to understand what they mean first, The usual responds he gets is "You know what I mean" or "Your just being awkward" 3. Points out the callers ignorance on the subject they phoned up on. For example there were many in the brexit debate. "I voted for brexit because of EU laws" O'Brien simply asks name one. Sure anyone can have an opinion on anything without knowing all the facts but you can't make the case for why you're pro or against somethig without even knowing what they are. A lot of people say that they agree with O'Brien but don't like the way he says things that you belittles or patronizes people. I think if a caller has a genuine point to make but struggles to use the right words and O'Brien is mocking them, then fine I would agree with that argument. But lets be clear all the callers who ring up are all adults and it's their chose.

There used to be a time when there were actual debates on Italian radio and tv. I’m old enough to remember them. Then in the 90s - in parallel with Berlusconi’s ascent in the political arena, we saw the rise of a new brand of politician, the professional shouter. And the entire tv culture of “shouting matches” expanded from soccer commentary and reality shows to the political debate. Whenever I go back to Italy and take a look at any of the more ‘revered’ political shows I see things keep getting worse in this sense. I have no longing for the political generation before “mani pulite” but can’t say the new ones are better (or even as bad) as that one.

I heard the argument from the first caller, Tina, all the way here in central Illinois from a Uber driver who didn’t think it was proper the Illinois Department of Health to classified his friend’s wife’s death as covid-19 relate because she threw a clot and died. These people all have the same mentality or lie. The argument is but for covid, under normal circumstances, would they have died.

I went to college for Information Technology, even though I had already passed English 100 as a prerequisite for a class, I took English 215 and 315 in addition. They were Advanced Research Writing, we wrote nothing but research papers every two days of the week for 3 months. It’s fun to do but I can imagine a hassle for everyone else. I’m annoyed by individuals who claim they’ve done their research but it was only a Facebook post they saw in a group chat.

The similarities between American and British politics and culture are staggeringly uncanny. I mean, it's really just unbelievable how the same issues, ignorance, racism, conspiracy, etc. is running through both populations and having the same effect on the body politic.
