According to the closed captioning "The James R Barker is equipped with a 1500 horsepower Ball Buster". I think my ex was about 1200hp. Best to avoid both.

Nothin' worse than when you're out in the cold and your horn freezes. I hate it when that happens.

must be cold up there today. The bridge horn sounded a little off to me too.

The base horn that gives the barkers iconic bark was frozen over.

I noticed it too and was very disappointed and thought maybe the horn got "fixed." Best ship horn on the Great Lakes.

Glad she came in safely! Was anchored near the Soo Locks for several days before leaving for Duluth.

Hiding from the 25 foot waves on Superior. Here on Lake Erie, in Ashtabula, we had 15 to 18 foot waves Saturday and Sunday. I seen the Miner also anchored up a day before entering Superior. Good captains safety first!

I just watched the Barker head north into the Detroit River from Lake Erie this morning (12/13/21) at about 10 am. I imagine it is on the way back to Duluth.

The B&B "Solglimt" in the beginning must be own by someone with relatives in Denmark, Norway or Sweden. It's a sun beam through heavy clouds.

I think he blew the dust off his whistle with that long salute🤣.

The view at the end would make a cool post card picture!

It was a good strong horn, but it sure didn't sound like our beloved James R. Barker. As my Italian grandfather would say 'He's a gotta raffredore' (head cold).

James R. Barker ".... My whistles are all froze" - at about the 20 second mark - bridge replies with ".... Roger - ours ain't much better"

The paint work at her bow had me a bit confused. Glad I’m not a crew member on these ships if they face seas like what’s depicted there.

Back in the late 70s or early 80s our friend's child, Franky, was in Duluth with friends for a concert. The kids would hang on the Arial Bridge and ride up a little then let go. Franky panicked and didn't let go. He couldn't hold on the whole time and eventually fell and died 💔 before the ship got through. Subscribed and hit the like button. Thanks Duluth, Grand Rapids MN native here..

That's probably why they are so strict in telling people to stay back when the bridge is about to lift. What a tragic story!

Just read about that - a very sad story.

Who and when did the 1 long, 2 short horn blast start❓
@mattharper5882 жыл бұрын
Don’t know about the who or when but it is called a salute kind of like a greeting some people think that the ship and bridge are signaling each other but that’s not true they have radios for that
@inkognitou69822 жыл бұрын
First the ship salutes the bridge and then the bridge operator salutes in return. They don't do it at night as a courtesy to the city residents.

I didn't ask the meaning of it.

Why the Master Salute versus the Captain's Salute?
@blackmoom2 жыл бұрын
She always does the Master, it's called if ya got it, flaunt it 😁🤟📢 ! Captain really drags it out, too.
