James Randi: Why I Came Out at Age 81

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a teenager in the '40s, James Randi "would have gotten stoned" for being gay. But when he outed himself to the world in 2010, the reaction was "wonderful."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JAMES RANDI:
James Randi is the founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF). Randi began his career as a magician, but when he retired at age 60, he switched to investigating paranormal, occult, and supernatural claims, which he collectively calls "woo-woo." Although often referred to as a "debunker," Randi rejects that title owing to its perceived bias, instead describing himself as an "investigator". He has written about the paranormal, skepticism, and the history of magic. He was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and is occasionally featured on the television program Penn & Teller: Bullshit!.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Question: Why did you decide to come out publicly at age 81?
James Randi: Oh, well. I did it, first of all, my next book is to be called, this is a plug, "A Magician in the Laboratory." And I’m working on that currently right now and it’s more or less autobiographical because so much of my life is spent running around the world and sitting around in laboratories and watching, in many cases, watching scientists make total fools of themselves. But I forgive them for that, they’re just not informed. I tried to inform them and such. And I thought, "Well hey, before I publish the book, I should really come out and say to people, yes, I’m gay. I’ve been gay all of my life." I don’t have any problem with that whatsoever. The point that I came out so late in my life is only due to the fact that I never got around to it. All my friends and family have always known. All of my office people and such have always known about this. And I’ve never made any refusal to discuss it, and if anyone has every asked, I said quite frankly, “Yes, that’s the situation.” And for 25 years now, I’ve had a faithful companion and we get along just fine. We’re very attached to one another, I’m very happy in that relationship and it doesn’t enter into my work at all though.
Question: How has the public reaction been?
James Randi: Oh, the public reaction has been wonderful. I anticipated that it would be, frankly, but it’s been much more, much better than I even dreamed it could be. I’m still getting emails months after this happened. I’m still getting email from people who say, "Oh I just found out about so and so, and bang on, that’s the way to go." And these a people who can or cannot be gay one way or another, it doesn’t make any difference. They all accept it. And a couple of sour grapes out there, but I could ignore them safely. But a very, very small minority. People have understood and we are in an enlightened age.
Now, when I was a teenager, oh, that would have been the last thing I could have possibly have done. I would have gotten stoned, I would have gotten beaten up every day, I’m sure, by the kids at school. But not anymore. That day, I hope, is passed.
Question: Will coming out be easier for the next generation?
James Randi: Yes. And not only that, in that respect as a matter of fact. I’ve found one thing that I did not anticipate. I’m getting a lot of correspondence from young gay people who say that I’ve served as an example of how it can be done and they’ve determined that they’re going to do it too. And that’s very encouraging. I think that relieves them of a bit of a burden, you feel somewhat freed up.
Now, I didn’t notice the difference at all because I’ve been out all of my life if anyone asked. That’s all there is to it. And nobody ever... well some people did ask, or sort of hinted at it. And I would come out with it right away. I had no problem with that. I still have no problem with it whatsoever. Here I am. And people often will say, “But you named your car Sophia, after Sophia Loren.” A little blue Miata, a beautiful little jobbie. And they said, “Well, you keep on talking about Sophia Loren.” And I say, “Yes. You see, I’m gay, but I’m not blind." After all, you know, that is not Oil of Olay that Sophia uses. That’s got to be witchcraft.

I would state that a sign for true success to the LGBT movement is when the term "coming out" is a forgotten phrase. Forgotten out of sheer redundancy due to sexualities many taboos being dissolved nor being an issue. The next sign would be the retirement of the LGBT movement. In the ideal egalitarian world there would be no need for such groups and they would be integrated in to society without thought. This indicator applies to any pointlessly oppressed group.

I am only 27 but I can honestly say that Mr. Randi has been a role model to me and a true source of education and inspiration to me all of my life. I only just moments ago discovered that he is gay and I’m so glad to hear he has a happy relationship with his partner, because the only thing I have always wanted for him was someone deserving of his epic wit and superb mind. I must confess that I am truly afraid that we are at some point going to lose Mr. Randi and those like him, but then I realised that those of us who love him and respect his work so much are the ones who must continue his legacy!

Many of you have highlighted the fact that sexual preference, in principle, doesn't mean anyone is bad, inferior or wrong. I agree 100% and I even get that saying so is actually a means of implying that people who DO think it matters in principle, are in fact bigoted and deserve for their beliefs to be marginalized. However, we live in the real world, not a world of principle. Sexual preference DOES matter right now because of the very important push to end the criminally negligent lack of acknowledgement of same sex partners and their rights to be as happily or unhappily married as any heterosexual. So, it's not important information in any other regards except for when it is. And right now, it is. So, If Randi wishes to share the uncommon knowledge of his homosexuality as a gesture of lending his good name to the cause of equality, then I stand behind him 100%.

What I find impossible to understand is how homosexuality can be considered a choice or a temptation. For me and most heterosexual people the notion of same-sex activity is of absolutely no interest at all -even abhorrent. Any one who considers themselves "gay" must be totally convinced of their orientation. Why would anyone choose a lifestyle that can promote the kind of vitriolic response such as is apparent here -unless they are 100% sure in their own mind of their sexual proclivity. I would think that it must take a great deal of courage.
@greatspirited
@greatspirited 11 жыл бұрын
To change the very nature of marriage is to tell God that He is wrong in the way He set it up, from the very beginning. There are many fine people who believe that tolerance of homosexuality is a virtue. But tolerance of evil, or sodomy in this case, is never a virtue, it's a huge vice. The reason that so many people want to go along to get along with homosexual marriage is because they know someone, a family member or a friend, who is homosexual and who is a wonderful person, and they want his/her friendship, so in their mind their friendship with their homosexual friend trumps the bible and the catechism. This upside down thinking - friendship with a human trumps God's Word - will lead to hell. What if their friend was an adulterer, or a child molester? Would the friendship with that person be more important than telling him/her that they are wrong? Saving someone from the fires of hell is true friendship, not sanctioning them in their sins.
@eefacam10434
@eefacam10434 11 жыл бұрын
greatspirited Firstly, adulterers and and child molesters have victims. This is rarely the case with same sex relationships. Secondly what right do you have to masquerade as some form of God's spokesman. You have to realize that apart from the USA, organised religion is on a steep decline and small wonder with people holding judgmental attitudes like yours. How dare you assume that everyone automatically shares your beliefs. It's odd that the phrase "God-fearing" seems to be irrevocably associated with your deity -not "God-loving". All I seem to hear from people like you are warnings of divine retribution, sin, punishment, pain, hell-fire, damnation, eternal agony and one more that I nearly forgot -unconditional love. Never mind, we don't need to bother with that one do we?

Yes Polygamy is illegal in all 50 states of the USA. The gay community & their supporters wants cops out of gay bedrooms but they are not upset about keeping cops in the polygamist bedrooms - go figure.
@sander395

Why the fuck would polygamy be illegal? In my country, polygamy is perfectly legal and it doesn't have the slightest effect on peoples lifes. Then again, nearly every form of sex and relationships are legal in my country - even incest aslong as it is among consenting adults and there is no force being used. Just let adults decide for themselves who they fuck and love or not, aslong as it is consenting
@ungertron
@ungertron 10 жыл бұрын
Your right polygamy should be legalized. Hold on now, so in your country a father can divorce his wife and marry his two 19 year old twin daughters, as long as their consenting? What country is that?
@sander395
@sander395 10 жыл бұрын
ungertron The Netherlands. And technically, yes that is possible. But they have to be able to prove that they are all in a good psychological state and that there is absolutly no cohersion going on. I believe there are some additional rules aswel. I believe people have to prove that they have had a relationship for more than two years, starting after the 18th birthday of the child. So that would actually make it impossible to have sex with your 19 year old daughter, but okay to do so with an 20 year old. I'm no lawyer though, so I don't know if this is really correct. All I know, incest is legal

+Arc Kocsog It's nobody's business what consenting adults do in private. I have straight, gay and bi friends. Old and young. So what, big deal. I don't intend to embark on any sexual relationship with them and vice versa. If any of them did I would be flattered. Rejection? I don't know of a living soul who hasn't been rejected in some way or other. What's the point of coming out these days anymore? Especially in the Western World. Slowly attitudes and laws have changed. My kids are in their twenties now. The kids in their school were open from the onset when they knew, even at school. They got treated like everyone else. If they were a likable character they were liked, if they weren't then they weren't liked. Simple. I brought my kids up around gay, straight, old, young, clever, wealthy,poor, different races bla bla bla. My kids accept people for basic fundamental reasons. Respect, trust, honesty you know? They are free thinkers. Live and let live!

+peekeyeseek It's a matter of identity. It's not for you, it's for the person coming out. It's a manner of asserting some degree of control over a life that person had zero say in, and of asserting their existence in a world that erases them. Doesn't matter if you don't care, it's not for you.
@peekeyeseek
@peekeyeseek 8 жыл бұрын
+Ozoceanic they might feel erased in your world but they don't over here. Everyone just gets on with it. They don't have a chip on their shoulder. All my kids friends came out in their early teens. It is seen as a natural part of development among many many people and parents I know. We don't care about sexual orientation. Its such a shame that has been your experience. Anyway straight folk don't come out, sluts don't come out, whoremasters don't come out, promiscuous people don't come out, sexual offenders certainly do not come out. Apart from the latter beasts, who can rot in hell. The thing is I do not want my kids and their kids kids being a persecutor or being persecuted just because they love whoever. And its an easy fight to pick with me because I obviously support people and diversity. If you were meaning to pick a fight, go and be brave and stand up to those who make people feel erased. Otherwise ssshh, its your personality and attitude that is the problem not your sexual orientation! If I have picked your grammar up correctly, you are indeed picking a fight. Way to go you! ( ps that is sarcasm by the way)

I'm ambivalent about that too, Gander. I think the reason people do this is because they want to be an open part of the gay pride thing. For so many hundreds of years gays have been persecuted and murdered (they still are), and perhaps now they're fallen into that "us versus them" mentality. "Look at me, I'm gay." Who really cares! But in any event and for whatever the reason, I'm glad that I've lived long enough to see folks get some semblance of civiil rights, women's rights, and gay rights. Hell, there should be free rights for everyone. Why should they have to fight for them?

What about stupid people? What about people with big noses? What about bald people? What about people who stink? What about people who are poor? Human beings will always discriminate. Even you phony righteous ones. Nearly all human beings discriminate in one form or another. That will not end until the human sees his end. I mean, his and her, I can't be "sexist" either. I forgot.

It’s so important to remember our history & not just gloss over it. Not only so that we can try to avoid mistakes of the past but also to appreciate how far we’ve come. Just remember: - During World War II the Nazis hunted many groups, including gay men. About 100,000 were arrested, 50,000 were imprisoned & about 15,000 were sent to concentration camps where most died. After the war they were still seen as criminals & those who survived the camps were often sent to prison & denied any reparations. - Until 2003, in 12 US states you could be arrested In your own home for having sex with someone of the same sex. - Until 2011 regardless of your service or how you risked your life fighting overseas in the military you could be court-martialed (expelled) for being gay. - Until 2015 same sex couples couldn’t get married in 13 states (including mine). Denying them basic rights like hospital visitation & power of attorney & penalizing them financially regarding inheritance & social security. We’ve come *so* far. Sadly you can still be fired from your job, lose your home, denied healthcare or be kicked out of a public business for simply being gay/lesbian. Gay “conversion therapy” is legal (for minors & adults) in most of the US & I can say from first hand experience it’s incredibly damaging & abusive. And I haven’t even mentioned the fight & struggle for trans rights. *Imagine everything James Randi saw & endured during his 92 years of life on this earth. Who can blame him for not coming out publicly sooner? We have so much to learn from the LGBT people who came before us. Randi gave a gift to the entire world though by opening so many peoples eyes to truth & critical thinking. He will be missed. 💛

The only reason he did this was because he was almost compelled to as a celebrity to help the young people in society. A shining example, because he's always been happy and proud of who he is; no need to shout it from the mountaintops or to hide it from people, but to state his preference matter-of-factly if ever asked. In fact, there's a lot of personal beliefs/behaviors that I wish more people would treat in this same manner...

That's how to be gay. I came out in a similar way by keeping it simple, letting my friends know I'm bi, that in my personal life my romantic partner(s) may be the same gender as me, that it's nothing to celebrate, nothing to condemn, just a personal preference. I feel we should steer a little bit away from "gay pride" and instead embrace "gay normality". I don't think my simple sexual preferences warrant celebrations, I think the best thing for gay acceptance in society isn't big performances and parades, it's getting decent respectable gay people to simply come out in the open, say they're gay, and go about their business to demonstrate how normal and harmless being gay is. I have at least 50 friends/acquaintances who may have never met an openly gay/bi person other than me, but now knowing me, they can personally attest that they know a bisexual and that they are just like any other ordinary decent person.
