That look he gives Dembe on the way out always breaks my heart. I used to think it was a sort of silent apology to him... but the more I watch it, the more I think that Red had to look at him, to remember WHY Geoff had to die. Because he would have consigned this "splendid" man to a living hell in some dank shithole. So much of what Red does, all the dirt he gets on his hands, he does for others... whether he admits it or not.

Thomas Piscopo Exactly...when he tells Lizzy that he is a "sin eater", he absorbs the evil that most people cannot handle.
@davidisaacson58065 жыл бұрын
I never saw it as an apology, more as him telling Dembe that he knows that Dembe disapproves but that he is, who he is. With just a brief glance he simultaneously acknowledges Dembe's disappointment but also reaffirms his commitment to his code.

I think there was also a small amount of, "Don't think I did that for you" in there. To me, part of what that look communicates is, "I didn't do that for you, I did it for me and so your hands are clean because you didn't want it."

+Not Me I'm guessing gratitude and loyalty, plus Red is something of a father figure to Dembe. And I'm sure that life with Red has turned out to be a lot more exciting and lucrative (albeit inherently a lot more dangerous and deadly) than any career he may have pursued as an English Lit major. Though to your point, I'm sure Dembe has asked himself that very question once or twice, especially during his latest situation.

Dembe is a sweetheart considering all the crap he went through in his childhood/early teens before Red took him. Glad the better, caring side of Red rubbed off on him than the steel cold side. Dembe plays another important role in The Major episode where he advices Red to go tell Liz "EVERYTHING" he's been keeping from her. Red gets emotional and says he doesn't think he can to which Dembe responds "Don't think, just tell".

This scene, and others, made me think quiet a lot about how Red perceives himself. Red thinks he is the bad guy. And he does a lot of things that make him out to be one. But he really isn't. He gets his hands dirty for the greater good, for the good of others. Whenever he sees an opportunity to push someone to be better, he takes it. Most importantly, he thinks of himself as the bad guy, and that's not what a bad guy does. A bad guy rationalize himself to be good or to be a victim so he can do what he wants to. Red does what he does and deals with the emotional consequences it takes on him.
