This is why everyone should take a drive across the USA, from one coast to the other, without using the Interstate. I've done it a few times.... wonderful way to see the country.

This song will always be sad because time will never go back and we all miss the days from our childhood. This song also brings back so many memories

Time may never rewind, but those days can come back if you try in a different way.

It’s bittersweet. Because I 100% agree with what you said, but also it can bring a sense of peace because you appreciate those days a lot more. We might be sad that it’s over, but we can definitely be glad that it happened.

I rode my motorcycle on Route 66 from Ok. City to the Pier (End of the Trail) in Santa Monica. This song is a living tribute to a way of life lost forever. A true sadness. DD

I've driven across the USA several times without using the Interstate. The two lane highways are indeed the best way to travel this country.

Its a story of a time that went by and is now forgotten. Main Street America. Life was a much simpler time and people honestly worked for what they had.

I first heard this song when the movie cars was first out theatres. I was 5. Now I will be 20 next month. When I hear this I remember going camping in the woods of southern Indiana with the cub scouts, roaming the woods in the backyard, shooting guns, and other stuff like that. Back then there used to be a ton of fireflies as well, last I was there was about 2 years ago and there was basically none. Nowhere. And the county as a whole a whole is a hick redneck white trailer trash small community. The last time I checked how big and populated it was, was about 4 months ago or so and the county was 378 square miles with a little more than 27,000 people

I totally agree I'm here in Royal Oak been taking long walks around by my neighborhood and I don't recognize the thing I mean even billing the lawn Care Service Company not only moved but now that lot is becoming a apartment complex and then they're trying to put the police station right next to the farmer's market and put a parking garage behind it that's going to be too much space there used to be a parking lot behind a restaurant called Leo's Coney Island now there's an office building behind is a very narrow street that the garbage trucks have a hard time getting through and then they're building a parking garage behind the library where the parking lot used to be I'm not used to surprises like this I nearly fell over in Surprise and I cursed in front of the homeless guy and immediately apologized I don't usually a curse or swear but when I see something that throws me off it's got to be for a reason even the fish market across from the farmers market is gone at least Jim's Frostie treats is still there they are celebrating 50 years I might be getting a job there please pray no setbacks come my way

Lyrics: Long ago, but not so very long ago The world was different, oh yes it was You settled down and you built a town and made it live And you watched it grow, it was your town Time goes by, time brings changes, you change too Nothing comes that you can’t handle, so on you go You never see it coming when the world caves in on you On your town, there’s nothing you can do Main street isn’t main street anymore Lights don’t shine as brightly as they shone before Tell the truth, lights don’t shine at all In our town Sun comes up each morning, just like it’s always done Get up, go to work, start the day You open up for business that’s never gonna come As the world rolls by a million miles away Main street isn’t main street anymore No one seems to need us like they did before It’s hard to find a reason left to stay But it’s our town, love it anyway Come what may, it’s our town

Rest In Peace to some American towns that are no longer with us, or only live as historic sites. The original Burnside, Kentucky, destroyed by the floodwaters created by Wolf Creek Down. Paradise, Kentucky, destroyed by the Peabody Coal Company. Bodie, California, destroyed by the mines drying up. Centralia, Pennsylvania, destroyed by underground coal fires. Rollins, Colorado, no need for the station there once the Moffitt Tunnel was built. Gilman, Colorado, declared an ecological hazard. Times Beach, Missouri, poisoned by Dioxin. Portage, Alaska, abandoned. Dyea, Alaska, abandoned after Klondike Gold Rush ended. Sneed, Arkansas, abandoned after being destroyed by a tornado. Perkinsville, Arizona, abandoned after it had no use as its railroad shut down and Hollywood ceased filming there. Kennicott, Alaska, abandoned by Kennicott Copper Company. Rockport, Utah, destroyed by the flood waters created by the Wanship Dam. Callville, Arizona/California/Nevada, destroyed by the flood waters created by the Hoover Dam. Rhyolite, Nevada, abandoned after a gold rush faded. Shaniko, Oregon, left as wool trade faded. Thurmond, West Virginia, abandoned as bad reputation grew. Lost straw for most was the fire in what was once a luxurious hotel. Still an Amtrak stop on occasion. South Pass City, Wyoming, abandoned after gold boom faded. Fairbank, Arizona, faded after nearby mines closed. Pine Barrens, New Jersey, abandoned due to closing industries. Santa Claus, Arizona, abandoned. Remembered by Santa Claus, Indiana. Flagstaff, Maine, destroyed by the flood waters created by Lake Flagstaff. Salton Riviera, California, abandoned as prevalence and size of Salton Sea faded. Ashcroft, Colorado, abandoned after its benefactor, Billy Fiske, died. Cahawba, Alabama, destroyed by the American Civil War and a flood. Virginia City, Montana, abandoned after mining boom faded. Dogtown, Massachusetts, demolished in 1845. Animas Forks, Colorado, mostly destroyed by blizzard, abandoned after last mine closed. Glenrio, Texas/New Mexico, abandoned when I-40 was built straight through it. Swan Island, Maine, residents forced out by state in 1940s. Bara-Hack, Connecticut, abandoned between 1865 and 1890. Glenville, Delaware, destroyed by Tropical Storm Henri in 2003 and demolished by state in 2005. Perky, Florida, abandoned when Post Office closed in 1942. Fowltown, Georgia, settled and abandoned twice. Mahukona, Hawaii, abandoned after hurricane damage and railroad closure. Cardiff, Illinois, abandoned after mining accidents caused rail traffic to cease. Monument City, Indiana, destroyed when Salamonie Lake was created. Queen City, Iowa, abandoned after 1885, currently under Lake Binder. Graves moved to more suitable location. Oil Hill, Kansas, abandoned after 1958 and an elementary school was named after it. Taft, Louisiana, effectively abandoned after 1982 Union Carbide explosion. Population was 0 by 2000. Long Point, Massachusetts, abandoned before 1900. Lone lighthouse remains. Singapore, Michigan, after fires in 1871, town was abandoned by 1875 when shifting sand dunes made staying impossible. Enterprise, Minnesota, abandoned in early 20th century and only a general store remains. Ben Lomond, Mississippi, submerged underneath Mississippi River. Defiance, Missouri, abandoned after railroad was built through Sheridan 1/2 mile away. Aldridge, Montana, abandoned after mines closed in 1910. Rock Bluff, Nebraska, abandoned some time after railroad bridge was built over Missouri River into Omaha. Bonnie Clare, Nevada, abandoned after rail traffic ceased. Monson, New Hampshire, abandoned due to poor soil conditions in 1770. South Cape May, New Jersey, wrecked by the 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane. Zapata, New Mexico, abandoned by 1908 and submerged under Elephant Butte reservoir by 1916. Love Canal, New York, closed by EPA after ecological disaster. Roanoke Colony, North Carolina, fate unknown, abandoned before 1591. Verendrye, North Dakota, abandoned in 1970 after it ceased to be a water stop for steam locomotives. Wonderland, Ohio, “never opened” abandoned after the near constant flooding of the Big Walnut River. Four Locks, Maryland, abandoned after the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad saw no further use for it. Locks and one house preserved. St. Elmo, Colorado, abandoned after mining boom faded. Preserved by rural area residents. Calico, California, abandoned when mining ceased. Structures only remain due to original preservation by Walter Knott.
