I would consider you pretty familiar with laser engravers and as such the best impartial person to turn to for my question. Setting aside speed efficiency in terms of profit(still should be quick for my own sanity), for a prototyping shop what laser system would you recommend for engraving primarily steels and tool steel up to 0.015-0.020” (0.35-0.5mm) with maybe occasional carbide/ceramics to half that but not nearly as a priority? [I’m assuming if it can handle these then other materials like aluminum, brass, bronze, cast iron, copper would be just as capable if i’m wrong, plz correct] I’ve been looking for a setup that can engrave deep Identification onto the above materials as traditional punch engraving isn’t practical and existing laser engravings rub off or become damaged & illegible. Some tooling with existing “scratch pass” from laser engraving gets worn away so quickly that it disrupts workflow, leads to costly mistakes and in general aggravates to the point of necessitating change. While there are definitely many other systems and methods that can be employed to minimize these issues, for my specific situation the most fool proof and reliable is to have tools with permanent engravings (something like the big deeply embedded numbering on impact sockets where at a glance the important information is immediately visible). I would never dream of holding someone else accountable for their opinion so any feedback or signposts would help immensely in narrowing down all the different competing models and stretched marketing strategies.

Thanks! You can work any metal. Without resetting the focal distance I was able to engrave down to 0.5mm deep.

Can you please say what type of coating you use for the metal tags and cards? Is this paint, powdercoat, electroplate?

Not sure what you mean. I didn't apply a coating to anything, but you can mark any of those.

@@JamesBiggar At 6:37 then how did you turn the unmarked aluminum business cards blue, black and gold if there was no coating on them to start? Is that some special alloy you're using?

I never said there was no coating on them to start with. I said that I didn't apply a coating to anything, because I didn't. Those are blanks made by a manufacturer who cuts and coats them for sale. You can buy them in a variety of thicknesses and colors, like a lot of laser engraving materials. Business cards, dog tags, tumblers, coasters, etc. Google it.

Yes, absolutely. It can engrave or mark any metal and most plastics. It's a great tool for a jeweler.

where does the removed metal go? I was thinking of using this in my jewelry business.

Mostly vaporized, some is turned to fine dust/powder that settles on the base and work bench. Not sure what sort of effect the laser has on the properties of particulates that aren't completely vaporized or if it's in a condition to be reused (I assume you would want to recycle as much 'waste' as possible). Ventilation is a must either way.
