Hello James. I’ve been watching you for a while now and just wanted to say thank you. You keep me in a good, positive place with your sensible approach to creating art. I've done so much art with you and no longer fret that I have 3 or 4 journals on the go! I used to hide my scrapbook journal - but no more! I’m so happy you reposted/uploaded your older stuff here. I watched your ‘Week in the (work) life’ from 2018 just now & - again! - you made me feel I'm not alone/that’s what I think, especially about listening not always watching and paying it back. Hi to Steve - thanks for the voiceovers. Hugs & kisses to both XXX

I literally paused the video to write this comment because I couldnt AGREE more when you said "for as small as it is, it is something to keep up with"! I had a 5-year journal that I started in 2013, and in the beginning, I was excited about writing in it because I imagine myself flipping through it and reminiscing about things that happened on that day, years in the past. That magic lasted for about two years, and I was already playing catchup after year 1. It became a "chore" to me because there are days where I didn't feel like journaling, but I felt bad for neglecting this 5-year journal because I'm supposed to write in it daily. After missing many days and not caring anymore, I soon abandoned it but still kept the book. I know it's okay to not feel pressure to do anything, and it was nice to hear another person having similar thoughts as me!

I abandoned mine after 3.5 years but then about a year later I decided to start again, so I have a 6 year diary with a gap in the middle. (Mine was undated). I was still journaling in other ways but I got really sick of that book and that chore.

@@olivemaycards Mine was also undated, but it was the kind of journal that you can buy from B&N. If it is the hobonichi, maybe I'll be more incline to go back

I'm DIY-ing a 5-year journal and getting ready to start it January 1, 2021! It was the radical changes in 2020 that inspired me. This year felt like five years in one, haha, and I can't wait to see where I am at the end of the journey. Seeing yours is so nice! It's beautiful!

I watched and enjoyed the Christmas party, - Merry Mixed Media -replay.... =) and I wanted to respond one thing that you and Steve were asking about.... “Does that actually work .... maybe Snow people out there, can tell us”... I know that someone already answered.... but I love making snow sculptures... so the answer is.... Yes, it works like that.... you roll and “pack” the snow.... to make your big balls.... HOwever, it has to be “Packing snow”, for it to work.... the “Fluffy snow” you can’t do it with.... the more wet snow, on “warmer” days.... works... that being said, it doesn’t work as well as it did in my younger days, even when I DO get enough of the right kind of snow..... Anyway... I Love all the art work in this video. =) And I pretty much agree with you, on everything you talked about.

I just started an art journal today. My plan is to do it for a month and see how I like it. Then I'll decide if I want to make it a regular part of my routine. Idk if I'd be able to keep a 5 year journal. That's a big commitment like you said. You seem to be doing well with it though ☺️

I keep getting tempted to do another 5 year journal even though my first one got to be a huge chore! Or rather, I got really sick of the book, didn’t like the format any more, it was too big etc etc. I think if I got the hobonichi it would seem too small very quickly, and I am not good at editing what I want to say! But still, tempted. Especially thinking about how 2021-2025 might play out... Love your paintings. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos :)

I’ve been in the habit of writing only a short blurb in mine about the happenings of the day, & while that has been a good reminder if I find myself falling behind in other types of journaling, I also have been thinking I need to stretch myself & try documenting a deeper level of content here...that was reinforced recently when I shared an old entry with a friend & we laughed so hard about how my boys will be so enthused to read that I cooked squash for supper one night after I’m gone 😂😂😂 Thought it was ironic that you mentioned that very thing in this video. Love your pages & creativity 😉😉😉

If you keep the book under a stack of other books that will help with the bulk and buckling of your pages. It won’t screw up the binding either.

I brought my best friend and my sister a leuchtturm 1917 5 year journal. They are both 50 next year and I thought it would be good to write about the first 5 years of being 50. It’s undated so they can miss some days. I do have to hobonichi 5 year A6 and am doing the first 5 years of being 50, I am a year behind because I will be 51 in January. I do lots of journaling and, like you I do fall behind, I am behind in my A6, about a month behind but that is fine. I don’t stress it and I will fall behind next year but, once again, I really don’t mind. 😁👍

I am giving myself the 5 year Techo for Christmas! So excited to start it! I notice you use a variety of pens and I struggle with smearing..haven't found a pen and Tomoe river paper combo that I love yet. I'd love to see a pen test video, pretty please! :)
@geslinam9703
@geslinam9703 4 жыл бұрын
I think the Zebra Sarasa line has a quick dry gel pen that is made for people who are left handed or have problems with smearing. I have never used it myself - I use several types of gel pens (fine tip) on Tomoe River and haven’t had much of a problem. It could be that thicker tipped pens, like 0.5 and up, smear more, as they put out more ink and it takes longer to dry.
@JamesLukeBurkeCreative
@JamesLukeBurkeCreative 4 жыл бұрын
I enjoy the Uni StyleFit with ball point black refill. The ballpoint one is super fine and also nice to draw and paint with because it's waterproof. If I had one I think I would use that, gel pens tend to ghost worse and smudge easier.

I'm waiting for two planners to be delivered (Hobonichi Weeks for my purse + Anna Vance for use at home), but I couldn't resist ordering the 5-year after watching your video. Question -- will any of the Hobonichi A6 covers fit the 5-year? The selection is so limited on the 5-year covers so I'm hoping the original A6 covers will fit.

I bought two five years journals in 2013, one with prompts, the other blank. They became a chore very quickly, especially when I had to pack them for a trip (bulky!), and I ended up growing more and more frustrated with myself for not being able to keep up. Then I realized that I can actually just write in them whenever I want. Every page has enough space to write about five years, but it doesn't have to be consecutive, I just pick it up whenever I feel like it, write something up, then read what I wrote in the past. The prompted one, which I didn't initially like that much, became really interesting to read! It'll probably take me 15 years to completely finish it, but I won't stress over missed days and I will have five very different answers to the same prompts, sometimes hilariously so...
@JamesLukeBurkeCreative
@JamesLukeBurkeCreative 4 жыл бұрын
I considered a prompted one as well - but I know if I got tired of it I would give up. For long projects I need to feel like my options are always open to keep myself motivated to continue.
