I think the columns were my favorite part to watch. It’s kinda magical watching how just the slightest mark on a page can give enough information for our brains to interpret it as a column. It’s like an illusion. I think beginning artists try to add everything they see, and it weighs it all down. The trick is learning how to get just enough info down so our eyes do the rest

James Gurney is one of my favorite artists. I've been a fan ever since I purchased Quozl off the book rack in the late 80's. I wouldn't have bought the book if it had't been for the amazing art on the cover. It wasn't until many years later that I made the connection between Dinotopia, National Geographic articles, Scientific American covers and that Alan Dean Foster book cover that captured my imagination. Your artwork has been ever present in my life and I feel very lucky to have found your blog and now this channel. I'm thankful for this technology that allows you to share such great artistic insights with your fans. I recommend to everyone that they purchase your extended painting demonstrations, you really go in depth and it's great to hear the information from your art theory books reiterated and demonstrated in a manner that is very easy to understand.

In a big city like Dublin, surely a hundred tourists have shooted an ugly picture from the same place with their "smartphone" in 1 and a half second. Two painters (JG and is wife) took time (2/3 hours) to watch carefully and interpret what they saw before their own eyes and it is so much magical, thank for that

The Mrs. and me like painting outdoors because it's an excuse to stand in one spot and take it all in. We found Dublin people to be so nice, especially the parents of young kids and the students at Trinity college who stopped to chat.

This is why its not good advice. This is decades of experience. A beginner would surely 'lose' and get frustrated from this.
@danrazART5 жыл бұрын
@@bowlock9901 you can't get more wrong than this. This is like saying 'the world is dangerous, don't be born'. The real answer is that DON'T BE AFRAID. IF YOU FEEL RIGHT THEN DO IT. This is 'killing the darlings ' as someone said. Technically, who cared if James didn't change paint when lighting changed? It was just his satisfaction that mattered, not the end result.
@bowlock99015 жыл бұрын
@@danrazART Im not saying be afraid, you are. I'm merely pointing out what i've learned from actually painting on location myself. It's an opinion. I respect yours, and yes you are correct. Be bold, be brave and be exciting. Im just trying to show my way of thinking, which i deem to be correct. This is not about technical ability, it's about discipline. Do you paint on location? It's one of my golden rules to students whom are taking up plein air painting. Snapshot the scene, mood, atmosphere and light, then go for it. If it changes mid painting and it throws you. I can guarantee you will fail every time. If you read my other comment you will see i applaude his work. The opening description of this video is asking a question. I'm giving my answer.

@@bowlock9901 i apologies if I have offended you. I have painted plein air and I don't like the light shifts. True, taking a snap of the scene is smart. Gurney, is a ruthless artist! He likes it rough. Don't let his calm demeanour fool you, he is as tough as a rock!

@@JamesGurney That's wonderful. He and my father had spent one school term together so figuring it might get us in to talk with him when he came to Sydney to perform we we made sure to see him backstage. He'd brought a guitar case on stage out of which he took a log and an axe, and sang the work song of the slaves Take This Hammer, punctuating the phrases appropriately with a fall of the axe. Unfortunately he had acquired for himself wood which would not cleanly cut but instead showered those of us at the front of the auditorium with shards of splintery wood, one of which my brother managed to catch, and Pete signed it for him, with a little sketch of a banjo. He was one of my heroes too, and the goodness in the world has been greatly diminished by his having left it. So, to change the subject, I only just realised you're the guy responsible for Dinotopia, which had captivated my children years ago. So glad I've found you.
