I don't have gouache but it looks fun and easy to paint with, but I know nothing's easy until you practice it
@IshikaShanai3 жыл бұрын
Its super easy to paint with! The only things to keep in mind are that the colours dry darker and if you used old gouache from the day before, it appears duller than gouache poured straight from the tube or similarly rehydrated watercolours. Lastly, the top layers rewet super easily unless you use acrylic gouache which dries like ink.

about watercolor/gouache in the cold, I still remember the first time painting outdoors in the middle of winter when I first came to America and the colors actually gels up/froze in the palette. I wonder if there's any way to counteract that? Maybe mixing something into the water to lower the solution's freezing temperature?

Omg for some reason it shocked me when u were talking abt how all the shadows are lit by some kind of light... I was just looking at them as the absence of light but in retrospect that makes no sense LOL
@JamesGurney3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much the only place where shadows aren't illuminated is outside our galaxy. Even shadows on the moon would be filled with reflected light, Earthlight, or starlight.
@Wijkert2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, what general color would the shadows be on a snow filled landscape and a cloudy day? In my understanding a heavily cloudy day cast grey shadows. I remember reading that in your book, Color and Light
@JamesGurney2 жыл бұрын
The color of the shadow area is a combination of the local color of a given surface, plus the relative color of the light source filling the shadow. On a sunny day that shadow-filling light source would be the blue sky,. But on a cloudy day there's no distinctive color; it's just gray.
