I love that the big cinematic production values ONLY come out for the weird coffee devices I would never buy, it keeps the channel from feeling gimmicky too often but is also such a smart way to grab viewers for what would probably be the least-viewed content on the channel otherwise, since these products arguably have the smallest target demographics.

I feel like if this was at least half the price (and had a bigger mug) it would be great for students. I've got one of these and while it's great fun, I just can't use it as intended: the truth is, when loaded and ready to go it makes my bedroom smell of coffee. And that creates such a strong "It's time to get up!" sense impulse that I just can't go to sleep. Also the milk fridge is a smidge too noisy for a bedroom gadget, for me. What I end up using it for is making coffee after I wake up when I'm having a Sunday lie-in. If you're doing that you can keep the coffee in a sealed container until you need it (so it doesn't make the room smell like a café). That way I can have a half decent coffee in bed without tipping off the kids that we're awake. This makes it a very expensive and niche solution to a problem I basically had to invent. So, no different from the rest of my coffee gear, really.

When I was going to University, every evening, I would set up my little percolator on the floor next to my bed. I had a cup with a lid on it, and my milk and sugar would go into that. When the alarm went off, I would hit snooze, roll over, and plug in the percolator. By the time the alarm went off again, my coffee was ready, I poured it into my cup, stirred it, and I had coffee without even getting out of bed. It wasn't boutique coffee, but this was the early 1980's, before all that. I thought it was decadent, and it got me through school.

It’s really interesting and cool to see how far it’s come and it’s changed a bit. The heating method seems different but looks wise it’s still kept the same aesthetic. But you essentially said all the things I might have guessed. Expensive for what it is and not quite sure who it’s aimed at and coffee could be better. We all even made the teasmaid comparison 7 years ago at uni.

James, also in the target "can't be arsed to make coffee in the evening". Because a good vacuum mug will keep coffee well enough hot to be enjoyable. A while back I'd measured my Zojirushi mug, pre-warmed, 80C in at 10PM, 54C out at 8AM. Zoj mugs start under 30 gbp for the smallest ones (480ml), they seal *extremely* well so they're excellent travel mugs (can be thrown in a bag if locked), and they also works for cool liquids in summer.

I learnt how to make my perfect coffee with my £10 cafatiere after watching 'The Ultimate French Press Technique' & I've never been able to get the same satisfaction from any other method, despite spending a few thousand £ over the years on different coffee machines. To overcome the laborious task of making it in the mornings I bought a £30 salter coffee maker with a timer but I don't use it for its intended purpose; I use it only for the hot water & timer - I fill up the machine with water just before bed & put my freshly ground coffee in the recepticle, not the filter. This has changed my life and I wake up in heaven every morning. Sometimes the sound wakes me up before my (seperate) alarm which I set for 5 min after the machine has poured the water (it takes 4 mins), but I love the sound and just lying there anticipating. I press snooze on my alarm & then without leaving my bed I gently stir the crust and then chill or snooze for 8 mins before pouring my coffee - it's an ethereal moment which I experience every morning and never, ever take this luxury for granted x
