My dad taught me early on in life when I was a kid about these pyramid schemes he would take me to them whenever they invited him to one and wouldnt buy anything and told me how they just wanted your hard earned money, also took me to Alcoholic Anonymous meetings even though he wasnt an Alcoholic just so I can listen to peoples stories and how they went down the path of destruction. I recently dated someone who was involved with an MLM. I couldn't believe how perfect we seemed to be for every other. Then she introduced me to her MLM and ended it when I wouldn't sign on. I was shocked. What stuck out to me is I have always been a numbers guy. I graduated college with a degree in accounting. I looked at the numbers and didn't like them. But when I went to meetings, the detractors were always painted as people without a job, irresponsible, living in their mother's basement. Yet here I was, a college educated numbers guy with a good job, asking questions.

I was stuck in a MLM cult for 5 years. I grew up in poverty and general instability. My parents never really taught me about jobs and basically stopped paying attention to my life after 15 when we were homeless for a while. I went on my first interview at this MLM firm and they hired me on the spot, of course. I gained so much self esteem and confidence from being involved with people that were infected by positivity and goals of upward momentum. It literally changed my life. However, the positivity came with intense shaming, berating, and psychological abuse all under the guise of “not reaching your goals”. They psychologically manipulated everyone to believe that if they did not reach their goals (sales goals), recruit enough people, retain complete positivity at all times, you were a failure. When you did good, they rewarded you with trips, money, and positive reinforcement. I was “seduced” by an older manager and he became my first real boyfriend (he was also 7 years older than me). He urged me that he needed to move the business to another state and that he needed me there to help start up the business. He paid my way and used me as this young woman who could lure people into the MLM. He brought me to a place where I knew no one but people of the MLM cult and psychologically abused me for years with the back and forth of negative and positive reinforcement of the cult. I literally didn’t understand that I was being manipulated when I was in it. I got to the point were I just couldn’t stand being so alone and bullied anymore. I knew some friends that had been in as long as I had that had recently left the cult and urged me to do the same. I secretly asked a friend to borrow some money to drive back to my home state when my BF was out of town, (yes I had to ask for money because through out this whole time, I didn’t make ANY money! I had maybe $100 to my name). I have come to realize years later that I was involved in a cult and what I went through really impacted me. It’s hard to share this with anyone that hasn’t gone through it. Anyways, thanks for listening. God bless ❤

The absolute biggest red flag for anyone considering joining one of these is the fact that there is no base pay. Add to that, they expect you to pay them to attend their training "seminars". A young couple approached me and my girlfriend, we had friendly casual conversation and the topic of being financially independent came up. I told them my story and how I’m striving for my own business and she tells me about her ‘mentors’ and how they became FI when they were 21-23. She immediately wanted to swap numbers and sync up with her and her partner over coffee to discuss more about us meeting with her mentors. I knew at that point they were in an MLM, so I played along. After 6 weeks of coffee meet ups and these ‘fun’ seminars, I finally convinced them to leave and pursue their own dreams. It’s only one couple but I’m glad I was able to save them because they were in a vulnerable state.

I just had a couple approach me at IKEA out of the blue the dude starts complimenting my shoes and starts to be overly extrovert like he wants to really get to know me and become friends like he’s really interested in who I am. Right then I knew he’s wanting something from me. He was trying to pitch something but I couldn’t figure it out and he never said what he was selling. He wasted so much time when he could of just pitched his “business opportunity” in the first 10min of talking to me rather than trying to be slick in making me think he was really wanting to be friends or get to know me as a person. They wanted to meet for coffee and I agreed just because I was curious what exactly he was trying to sell not that I would buy into it because I was already pissed on the way he approached me. What amazes me is that they have the same access to the internet to research mlm and Amway to find out that you can’t really make the big money they claim you can make.

However, to my disappointment, despite boasting about his prosperity, he refused to support me. I think them not willing to help you with getting started is a huge sign of just how not-prosperous they were, but wanting to hide it. But I'm really, really happy you didn't join. Likelihood of being successful is minimal and those who are successful are only there because they stepped on others to be there. They have a huge downline, meaning lots of other people below them that they're getting money from. This is why MLM leaders become extremely aggressive when you or someone else leaves, because now you're messing with the money machine. I'm just really relieved that by circumstance, you dodged a bullet and best yet, landed in a career that has much better and guaranteed profitability 😊. I hope everything is going well for you.

My wife and I got involved in the Herbalife scam and I ended up over $15,000 poorer. Finally it dawned on me the only one making serious money was our upline. The couple had a beautiful home in a gated community as well as a cabin in Idaho. I finally realized that all we were doing was to fuel their lifestyle. So I pulled out and my wife left a couple of months later. The really reprehensible thing, though, is how they are scamming poor Latinos. I was recruited into the Amway business at 15 years old and remained involved until I was 27. Amway ruled my life and shaped my childhood. For some, MLM isn't a cult but for me it ran my entire life, manipulated all my friendships and made me look at people like dollar signs and not actual friendships. Pyramid scheme businesses are designed to take advantage of people and worse, for me, it shaped my brain to always look for ways to profit from friendships and anyone else I met. The most I ever made in 12 years of business was $900 in one month. I had recruited over 200 people in my business and spoke on stages across the country. I was told, "People will believe you because you hold the microphone." I lead weekly "Open Opportunity Meetings" and had a large group...worse, when I left the business I lost all my friendships and since I'd been in since I was a child - that was everyone I knew. Me too, this was over 20 years ago, I know exactly how Amway manipulated you , I was introduce by my family doctor, the starter kit was $150 or so, I hosted a few recruiting party at my house, same as you , all my friends, and families were there, at the end of each presentation, most looked at me like I was crazy , how I fell into the scam. Lol , after 2 months we tried to get out of it, my family doctor and their senior Amway people literally kicked us out the door, lol and said “ you supposed to support the system/ paramid scam system”. I even asked for my $150 back . I guess I got myself a new family doctor 👩‍⚕️, never fell to any of these again, just work and saved up to 20% of my paycheque to payoff my mortgage . My husband was part of an MLM for a few years, to my biggest dismay. They spread toxic positivity and eventually he started feeling depressed and inadequate. I sent him an anti-mlm video and it finally clicked. Also behind the scenes they were teaching him how to hide things from me, like how much product he was buying and giving away to prospects who never panned out. He had to go through his own kind of deprogramming, to get rid of all the toxic positivity, love bombing, gaslighting and to live a normal life again.

I hope that those would be the last occasion you would be approached about it and lied to, but i think we both know thats probably not true the industry has much to learn, grow, learn and correct. It was so cult like it scared the crop out of me.

When I was in my early 20s a guy I knew dragged me to one lf these events. I had no idea what it was. The way they were acting I thought it was a church or something. But they kept talking about "the buisniess" and "how to be successful". I remember being frustrated thinking "what do these people actually sell?". People were paying a lot of money for self help audio tapes from "people who made double dimond". I heard one and it was all vague nonspecific BS. It was like, you paid $40 for that? And this dude wants you to be successful? Then why didn't he post it on youtube? Its a religon to these people man. I tried to talk this elderly couple out of it, but they fell for it and lost their entire life savings. These kinds of companies need to be outlawed. They are pure evil.

A long time ago, my g/f and I were invited for some MLM scheme by a friend and her b/f, who were already "distributors." I was really skeptical from the get go, but what really pissed me off was how they ended the presentation. The guy told a "true story" about a good friend of his who was never very successful. He pitched the friend several times, with no success, and his friend eventually "committed suicide." And, of course, the presenter said the one thing he regretted in his life was not working harder to get his friend into the business because he knows he would have had a better life. People in the audience gasped. I was so angry they would pull that trick. Since then, I've noticed this tactic is still used by most MLMs.

When I was in my twenties, I became involved in a MLM. My experience was like what is explained here. What I ended up finding was that the up line at the top or "king pin distributors" weren't making their millions off the commission created by their down lines. Where they made their millions from were the book, motivational materials and seminars. The "business tools" that every distributor had to invest in or you weren't going to be successful. In short, they made their millions on selling you a dream. Not a product or "business opportunity".

Went to the biggest Amway convention in Atlanta, loved the experience but this company never made success in Quebec. It had great products but no support like many home business, now not even from the owners .They expect everyone to do the work for them .Many act like a distributor warehouse service

Judi, there's nothing wrong with Amway per se, just some of the underhanded tactics that they use, claim you can retire in 5 years or some such nonsense. I once drove a truck with a partner - long haul so we spent 24/7 together - who was into Amway so I had to listen to him talk about it all day and all night. He even brought books and CDs onto the truck. He bought into the claim that you could have anything you so desired, could fulfill all your hopes and dreams. I'm like that's nuts. It's a job, nothing more, nothing less. Another thing was everybody who got into it with the sole purpose of getting out of it. There is only one reason for that - they hated it. I'm like find something you love and you won't be so anxious to get out. Another thing I noticed - he did not have one single Amway product. Tell more about your daughter, Judi, if you don't mind.

I take it the dislikes on this video are from people who are already suckered in a mlm scam. I have once or twice and always lost more money than I gained. My intuition always told me something was fraudulent from the start. The moment someone tells me "Hey long time how are you doing," or "I have a business opportunity" my scam alert radar goes off. Believe it or not, I actually bought some Young Living products not knowing that it was an MLM. I saw that my cousin had some (she wasn’t a distributor, she just ordered some under someone), I liked them, and just ordered a few oils for myself. A few days later I was tracked down by the nearest distributor in my town and she wouldn’t leave me alone for months. She couldn’t believe I didn’t order under someone. She convinced me to buy the starter kit and I had to make a monthly order which I kept up for a few months bc I truly did love their products. But soon enough, I couldn’t take the marketing anymore. I was constantly being pressured to join virtual meetings, visit the farms, tell my friends and family, hold events, etc. etc.. Nope. This isn’t a be-your-own-boss career. You’re literally scammed into devoting your whole life to the company….

The products do kind of work for long lasting energy but are garbage at weight loss or any of the other claims they made, let alone the MLM aspect of it which i never got involved with. I wouldn't call it overly positive, more of a phony presentation designed to give an appearance of positivity. I remember my first Amway rally, looking around the crowd even spotting a couple people I knew in the crowd. I remember people jumping up and down cheering on the speakers. The goal was to get people caught up in the emotion of the moment. The idea of quick wealth. It was like watching a performance of mass hypnosis. My background had been as a sales manager in commercial sales dealing with facts and figures rather than playing on peoples emotions. I spotted the tactics they used immediately also the fact that immediate uplines wouldn't leave their new recruits alone for even a day without contacting them attempting to maintain and reinforce the brainwashing tactics.

My ex wife dove in, head first with Vemma. That insane group brainwashed her into someone she wasn’t. I went to a “meeting” with her once, I could tell immediately it was a MLM. I tried telling her and explaining, but she didn’t want to hear it. Vemma was a big reason she decided to step out on our marriage and find someone else. I despise that company for their tactics and manipulative ways. Do your homework people. Nothing great in life is easy. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is 99.9% of the time.
