James Kalm scoots to the West Side and drops in to the Hunter College Art Galleries to bring viewers along for a walking tour of “Stephen Mueller: Orchidaceous”, the most comprehensive survey of the late artist’s works. Mueller (1947 - 20011) was one of a loose group of painters who went against the grain of conceptualism and minimalism to maintain their commitment to abstract painting. This retrospective focuses on a period when the artist develops his unique vision, and produces a body of painting that remains singular and influential. Curator Carrie Moyer gives a brief interview, and appreciation of Mueller’s project, and his mastery of acrylic painting techniques. This program was recorded Sept. 13, 2018

Stephen Mueller is a master in his use of acrylic paint. I can see his influence in the works of Carrie Morrie, who's also able to do magical things with acrylic paint. Thanks James for introducing this execellent painter to your followers.

Carrie Morrie? I can't find her work anywhere. Do you have a link to her art?

Top notch opening song - hilarious, and totally loved it! As for the art - I'd also throw in Shirley Kaneda as an artist from the same generation engaging in a quite similar vein of work. Thanks thanks! James and Kate...

Enjoyed seeing this. Every generation has those really great painters who are known but overshadowed by flashy, trendy ones. Recall first seeing his work in a Biennial in the 1980s. At that time he was using rectangles and floating them in fields of acrylic stained into canvas as I recall. Something like Hans Hofmann. Excellent stuff here. Thank You.

Incredible show! Love Stephen's work. I agree with your assessment that he fits in with the earlier transcendentalist painters. Thanks James!

Really fine coverage a very talented artist who excelleled in a wide variety of techniques & extremely subtle effects assembling them together into a pure new language.of possibilities. Liked your take of Stephen being a transcendalist. I’d videoed a few of His shows over Fanellies in SoHo believe Betty Cunningham in the mid to late 90’s.

He dry/fan brushes the background then layers in the opaque, geo mass free form. (He resonates with Miro) - He doesn’t over work his talent - Still there is a redundancy in his overall collection. - I’ve watched this video twice now and I am going to watch it the third time - right now :-)

I wondered how you knew he dry brushes the backgrounds as they look like washes. To me it looks like he uses stencils for the top masses, but both are just a guess. I've tried to find more about him on the web, but haven't found much.
