Good question. As an instructor, I like to show students that it's possible to conduct social media analysis without an expensive computer or the fancy, corporate-targeted, and big-budgeted software packages/services out there. Also as an instructor, I find that when students work through social media analysis using a text language like Python to obtain data or run an analysis, they have a better logical understanding of the basis of social media and the basics of analysis. This is much better from a learning perspective than relying on a prepackaged point-and-click paid solution.
