Blade Runner (1982) - Rental Reviews

The future is now! Blade Runner takes place a week from this episode of Rental Reviews airing. (Nov 20, 2019) So, we decided to finally review this film. Blade Runner is a 1982 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott,,and is loosely based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968). In the movie Deckard (Harrison Ford) is forced by the police Boss to continue his old job as Replicant Hunter. His assignment: eliminate four escaped Replicants from the colonies who have returned to Earth. Before starting the job, Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation and he meets Rachel (Sean Young), a Replicant girl he falls in love with.

Exactly. The pitch for Legend did not come up until 1982, and while Blade Runner was released in 1982, it was shot in 1981. Ridley Scott simply had a thing for unicorns, apparently.

If you haven't watched this movie before I recommend you only see the 1982 theatrical version and the 2007 final cut, all another cuts are pointless and unnecessary imo....

There is an illegal version that runs somewhat on modern systems but ya know, can't discuss that here :P But the game is great, it does not follow the story of the movie but does borrows heavily from it it's kinda weird...

Probably my favorite movie ever. I like dystopian fiction, and noir settings...so this is just the right amount of everything. Rain and night, neon lights, dreary, slow scenes with lights flashing by... not too many explanations... I saw this movie as a very young kid, so it really influenced how I see ...well..the world, I guess. Science, progress, society, humanity...ethics, empathy. What are those, what can we do, what is ideal? How can we judge something that we create for being too alike to us? A machine does not commit homicide. It's in the word.

What I like about him being a replicant is that his "not caring' helps polish off his arc. You say "why does it matter" and I think the idea is that he just nods and walking off after finding out tells you his arc is complete.

I believe the unicorn scene was supposed to be in the film originally. Its inclusion in the Final Cut and Director's Cut makes sense of the final scene where Deckard finds the origami unicorn.

A stronger emphasis on action would diminish the philosophical nature of the film. It would turn Blade Runner into just another sci-fi actioner.

I was always under the impression that Deckard was a replicant in the original and I felt it was elaborated on in 2049. Also a little disappointed the rumored link to the Alien franchise wasn't discussed here.

I feel this movie posed many questions that were left to the viewer to answer. In a sense that is where much of the substance of the movie is derived. Ridley Scott has a special ability to give the viewer just enough to interpret their own questions and meanings for what is happening in the film. That is why there is so much dead air in this film. Ridley is allowing us to ponder the deeper thoughts and emotions that all truly make us more human than human.

@@anequallygoodchannel.2761 I own the Ultimate Edition that includes every cut and I just checked that scene. He does indeed say "Fucker" in the Theatrical Cuts and the Directors Cut. Interestingly, the German dub says "Vater" (father) in all versions.

What James doesn't get is that this film set the bar for the futuristic dystopian noir genre. He's probably so familiar with the homages that he never got to experience the original in its prime. For me I saw this on TV one night as a kid and for me the idea that the earth could have lost all its nature to industrialisation and synthetic replacements seemed abhorrant. Yet the story persisted in this quagmire of over development and decay. It was a shock to my senses but since then I had a love for this genre.

That Family Values Tour VHS in front of James is the messed up one where the singer from Rammstein....Relieves himself on the crowd... Still less disgusting than listening to Limp Bizkit.

The thing about animals is actually about empathy. That's the theme of the book: people looking for empathy and/or wanting to feel some, while looking for it in artificial devices or animals and never in each other. As a theme it's almost absent from the movie, but they brought it back for 2049.
