Dennis the Menace was developed and published by Ocean Software in 1993. It was based off the movie starring Walter Matthau, Mason Gamble, Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd. In this episode of James & Mike Mondays, we play the SNES version. (It was also released on Game Boy and Amiga) This is a 2D action platformer where your goal is to defeat a burglar (Switchblade Sam) as you make your way through stages like Mr. Wilson's home. Sit back and watch as James Rolfe and Mike Matei give Dennis the Menace for SNES their best effort!

Yeah, and I get the impression that they also do most of these videos halfheartedly too. In Bubsy they got stuck for no apparent reason at the same point for almost 2/3 of the video and most of them dying was because they didn't put any effort into them at all.

That comment about the end... about looking stuff up... That's kinda invalid at this point I think. If you were to have purchased the game when it came out (even renting it from a Blockbuster, my local ones always had a basic controls list on the Blockbuster case with them), it would have come with an instruction manual that told you the controls, including the run button that somehow didn't actually seem to get used, and the fact that running to build up speed and then jumping makes for better jumps. Obviously, most people who play the game today don't have that manual; therefore, it's perfectly valid to look up at least the controls. People always complain and whine about games these days "holding your hand" and teaching you the controls, but then they want to complain about older games having controls that aren't explained anywhere in the game, and therefore the game is bad because of that?

Yeah, I don't know how these veteran gamers didn't figure out the run button on their own. I remember someone in a video (maybe James) talking about how games today are laden with tutorials or controller prompts and how, back in the day, we had to learn through trial and error. Perhaps that's a good thing since it seems that some still struggle with figuring out simple mechanics like running. Honestly I think they just do this for "entertainment value", but it makes the games look bad.

The object of the game is to collect all the Dennis coins. The coins you couldn't collect indicate that you needed more before you could go through the boss door. And you did have to jump on the jack in the box.

I used to have this game as a kid and I was always actually really scared of him whenever he popped out hahaha. Dude they grew up in a time when figuring out the controls was mashing all the buttons to see what they did. I can attest to this since I grew up with the same games and mindset. That just how they figure out the games, the old fashioned way. Sure its frustrating but thats how it was back then if you rented a game all you got was the cart, no box, no manual just a plastic cart and whatever experimentation you could do and think of. Cut em some slack, these aren't even let's plays either a let's play showcases the entire game this is just gameplay. They never said they would be experts at it, and in fact they said they knew next to nothing about it. Sure they might be able to look up the controls or manual online but the odds of some obscure old game's controls being posted somewhere are slim. Cut them some slack in that department.

I actualy thought it was a little sad they didnt find out there was a sprint button. That would have made the episode a lot more fun for them and for us. Especialy with the kind of gaming sence these two have they should have questioned the games mechanics and tryed more things. I mean they did that in the last game they played. Once again nice episode but it would have been better if you were at least able to play it for real.

Like with the Nerd, just imagine renting this as an eight year old, with no books about it or friends to talk to about it. Just your game knowledge, however much you play anyway. It would really suck as a weekend rental to get stuck right on friday night. That said, I'm sure someone already said it, but all I could think of was water the plants with the water gun for better platforms, and maybe, MAYBE try jumping on the jack in the box's head instead of just the box to see if you go up, then go left for that switch. But again, not at all visible or intuitive. It's like Home Alone 2, Wizard of Oz, Wayne's World or Home Improvement. Just these massive spaces with nonsense paths, no clear direction, tons of enemies and weird designs and ideas.

I'll admit that I found the 50's sitcom to be amusing, but I loved the 80's cartoon even more. In fact, every time I watch the live-action movie from '93, I cannot help but relate it to the cartoon.

spoilers: I just gave this game a try myself to see if I could figure it out; which I did. you can run from mr wilson, then run back after him, use the jack in a box to boost you up to the platforms above, hit the switch which causes the ladder to the attic to come down, from there you can continue the level. also you can run + jump to make the 'tougher' jumps.

just watched a walk through of the first level and there is no way James & Mike would have figured it out. First of all, they missed the running feature. The funny thing is Mike was right about the Jack in the Box and the switch. These videos are still the best thing about Mondays.

Stephen Catt I actually thought the switch looked real, but the jack in the box thing was like a "no way". I laughed watching the walk through when he stood on it and it shot him up. They had to also get in the attic as well. And you can outrun Mr. Wilson too.

Why on earth didn't you guys try pressing all the buttons? That's the first thing you should have tried, and you would have found the run button, which would've helped you make the long jumps and avoided Mr Wilson. This game is still sucky, but you guys made it look EXTRA awful. Especially with things like the gas hitting you, causing your health to go down and your character to flash but you still didn't notice it was killing you.
