Batman: The Video Game was published and released by Sunsoft in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is a platform game consisting of five levels, that last of which being the Gotham City Cathedral where Batman must face off against The Joker! Similar to Ninja Gaiden, the gameplay largely involves Batman wall jumping in order to scale buildings. There were also versions of this game released for Sega Genesis and Gameboy. The NES version of the game is widely known as being one of the few movie based titles to receive positive critical reception for the system. In this video, James Rolfe and Mike Matei play the first four levels. Stay tuned next week for the conclusion, where Mike and James play through the final stage and attempt to make it to The Joker! (This is Part 1 of a 2 part video)

This video takes me back to the late 1980s & early 1990s, when I'd sit with a friend and we'd take turns playing games that we rented for the weekend. One of us would play while the other would be supportive... maybe by referencing an open copy of Nintendo Power (for maps & strategies) or just by giving advice based on experience or what was seen on the screen. Before we had the Internet to walk us through games, playing with a friend was really the best approach. It was like having a navigator to help guide you along the way... and, at least in my case, you both felt pretty accomplished when seeing that ending or those closing credits. Can't wait for Part 2.

or you'd take turns/shifts while the other slept even... I've had sessions like that for really hard games & for leveling up in RPG's. Yup... nothin like the old school. It gave you a sense of accomplishment to see those shitty endings, often just a screen saying "congrats" or something, ripe with typos.

All the Batman NES games are good in their own right, though the self titled one is easily the best. From the graphics which genuinely are still even today some of the best on the system, the music (Sunsoft always rocked in this department on NES) to the level design etc.

Yeah, like growing up you find all the "official" terms for videogames stuff, but back then everybody used to make up names. Like I used to call bosses "end monster", or my uncle called levels "walls" and stuff like that.

KombatGod I couldn't agree more. The NES and Super Mario Bros. came out when I was in 1st grade. When I would describe it at school I never used the right terms. I remember actually saying, "well in Super Mario Bros. you just go across the screen and you jump on boards and bricks and stuff..." I never even knew about such fancy words like Platformer , Side Scroller, etc.

How would LJN make this game?Hmmm....I guess...you would be Alfred collecting bats and fighting bosses along the way.The bosses being a clock,a bat pencil and a black dildo look-a-like.In the final boss,you finally play as Batman sticking your batarangs up the Joker's ass and then to beat the game,you must be Alfred and then be in the spot where the shadow is hitting and deliver a watch to Batman so he can make the Joker stronger and then he explodes and then you have to save Joker's parts and fight him on a blue dragon while flying through the insides of LJN beaten up asshole and when you beat Joker,the game says :"YOU BEAT GAME,GOOD WORKING,FUCK YOU," and then you would comment on the bad gramar and everything would be fine in the world.Except for the fact that the LJN Batman game exists. LJN PRESENT:BATMAN MOVIE THE GAME THE.

The term "Rest" instead of lives in games is a way of avoiding stating that a character dies. You see it most often in games aimed at kids where the developer wants to avoid the concept of characters dying, or in licensed games when the owner of the character won't allow the character to literally die in the game. The way they get around it is to refer to the character's life meter as "power" instead, and when the character runs out of power, they have to rest, instead of having them run out of life and die. For example, Mario never "dies", he just gets knocked out, it's just a kinder way of handling failure.

I know it's probably not what you had in mind, but the animated movie "Sub-Zero" was actually quite good IMO. (I didn't expect it would be - name sounds like an ill-conceived attempt to leech off Mortal Kombat's popularity, and I think it was direct-to-video which is often a bad sign... But I was actually quite pleased with it.) The animated series practically *invented* the concept of Mr. Freeze "done right", after all... Before that he was pretty much just "bad guy with a freeze ray"

the batarangs are recyclable but they use a fuel that is not, each time he throws one he has to charge it up with a small amount of the rage that he feels about his parents getting murdered, and after a while he becomes too calm and placid to be able to charge his weapon so he needs to expose himself to more criminal activity in order to get angry again and until then he cannot fight at full effectiveness sources: Detective Comics #261, Detective Comics #414, Man-Bat #1, Deuteronomy 3:12-20

Batman Begins was the best of Nolan Trilogy. It felt like a Batman movie. TDK was good, but it was too busy developing Joker and Harvey Dent. Batman was a side character on his own movie. TDK felt like AVGN said: a crime drama movie with Batman in it. Batman Begins was all about Batman becoming Batman. Batman was the main focus of the movie. TDKR... What a joke.
@irllcd13
@irllcd13 6 жыл бұрын
It's true, but even that one is overrated. The Nolan movies aren't that great. Also, Mark Hamill and Jack Nicholson are both better Jokers. TDKR is actually bad. It's so stupid it's like a Michael Bay movie.

I made it all the way to the Joker--which is hard as fuck. I was determined to keep playing until I beat him...then my little sister comes in my room, bugging the hell out of me. She messes around and ends up falling on the floor (I may have helped a little)...her thud actually pops my game out! I did not have the resolve to start over. Never played it again until years later when just playing around with emulation. To this day, I joke with her. Threatening to buy her a NES and this game and making her get me back to that spot. No emulators. No save states. You play it the way I did. You will understand why I harbor so much resentment. You will feel my pain. LOL

Problem with Christopher Nolan's Batman movies and the rest of DC/WB's movies now a days is that they're grounded in reality. They try to be as realistic as possible which is why I can't stand them. I'm hoping this trend dies soon...
@NewCanada
@NewCanada 9 жыл бұрын
CJ Rocky Yeah I'm the complete opposite I can't stand fantasy stuff to be grounded in reality. They did the same damn thing with Mortal Kombat a few years ago on KZbin. Dear Hollywood please stop doing that! I never asked for fantasy stuff to be grounded in reality...ever.
@NewCanada
@NewCanada 9 жыл бұрын
CJ Rocky As long as it's not like Nolan's Batman movies. Something like the Arkham games would be cool. WB/DC's movies seem like they are trying to be way too serious, realistic, and artsy.

LOL Party Up (Ordained Atheist Priest) yeh that was a bad example, fuck nolans version its shit allaround...emm lets say instead maybe like a cross between The tim Burton version and a Quinten Tarrentino film would be cool.

CJ Rocky Or a cross between something detective related. I don't think I've seen Batman do any detective work in any of the films.

I frickin' love Sunsoft. They are the true masters of using the NES sound chip in creative ways, to make some awesome tunes. Not to mention, they made some damn good games too! Batman, Batman ROTJ (sure, it's flawed in its insane difficulty, but it's such a wicked impressive game both sound- and graphic wise, you almost can't believe it's on the NES), Ufouria, Blaster Master, Journey to Silius, and probably dozens of other impressive games that I've never had the chance to try. I wanna try Sunman, which would be quite the gem to play legit :)
