It’s also got a great soundtrack; I like how the title screen music and the overworld music for Palma are very peppy and 80’s sounding.

@bobdeinterlace8 жыл бұрын
I loved this game as a child. It taught me how to play rock paper scissors. It's weird how the Master System is considered obscure the United States, while it was more popular than the NES in Europe (where nobody gave a shit about the NES). There's a surprising amount of Master System games that were exclusive to Europe, which says a lot about how unpopular it was in other regions. Normally it's the other way around, the US and Japan get all the games while Europe is left out on a lot of stuff.
@MrBossyful7 жыл бұрын
This is actually not entirely accurate. Behind the Iron Curtain SMS was pretty much non-existent, and in Scandinavia it was a 50/50 situation to my knowledge. This likely stems from the fact that Taiwan also had the original Famicom (one of the very few places apart from Japan where it was released), and so it was imported to mainland China and later Russia and many countries of Eastern/Central Europe and Scandinavia rather quickly. It's true that SMS was super popular in Spain/France/the UK though. Interestingly, Sega Mega Drive was popular pretty much all over Europe, unlike SNES. Quite a convoluted situation all things considered. :)
@retropolis17 жыл бұрын
Bullshit. NES overshadowed the SMS by far in Germany. In Germany everybody played Nintendo (if they did not play C64 or Commodore Amiga). Same situation in Austria, Switzerland, Spain and in Italy, where NES had the upper hand, while Sega was a distant second. SMS was very strong in France and Great Britain, though.

Missile Defense 3-D was not a built in game for the Master system, it was Hang-On and Safari Hunt. @zayzstation8 жыл бұрын
Missle Defense 3D was indeed a built in game, but only for ONE of the later Sega Master system models. It depends on which Sega Master System model one has. The original model (the one I have from 1986) had the SNAIL MAZE game built into the system (which starts when you press up with both buttons at the same time while no cartridge is inserted) while Hang-on & Safari Hunt both came on a single cartridge. LATER models had different games built into the system. Hang-on & Safari Hunt were built into one of the later models (no cartridge). Missile Defense 3D was also built into certain special select Sega Master System models containing the Sega Scope 3D glasses (NOT as a cartridge, but built into the system), but that game was also released on cartridge and sold seperately for people who already had a Sega Master System and were buying Sega Scope 3D seperately. Space Harrier was also built into the system for another later model, but I forget which region (I live in the United States and I don't remember this one and only found out about Space Harrier being a built in game for later Master System models during my adulthood). Of course, Space Harrier was also released on cartridge in all regions for people already owning a Master System. Finally, while the Sega Master System 2 did have Alex Kidd in Miracle World built into it (despite the game being released years earlier on Cartridge) later Master System 2 models had the Master System versions of Sonic the Hedgehog (and some with Sonic 2 in other regions) built into them, despite those games being available in cartridge form.
@GameSack8 жыл бұрын
Some systems had Hang-On and Safari Hunt built in. Some (like mine) had NO GAME built in... unless you knew the code. Then you get Snail Maze. The systems that came with the 3D glasses had Missile Defense 3D built in.

I remember going to play the game my dad bought me and I didn't insert it all the way and Alex Kidd came up. That is when we discovered that Alex Kidd was built into the system rather than being a cartridge....That would be awesome if other cartridge based systems did that....I'm surprised Sega didn't do that with Altered Beast or Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis

The problem is that these guys are total Nintendo/Atari fanboys and are butthurt about how tough this game is. Don't get me wrong, I love the Cinemassacre crew and it's great watching them play games every week but they seem unreasonably harsh against Sega sometimes. They only just slowly starting to warm to the Mega Drive/Genesis with their Splatterhouse videos etc. Maybe if they had more Sega when they were younger they would see these games in a different light. I'd like to recommend to them that they play the Castlevania-clone "Master of Darkness" on the Master System as it's a cool creepy horror platformer based on the Dracula mythos, but I'm worried that they would just disregard it as not being as good as Castlevania (obviously it isn't as good as Castlevania, but it's still a great game!).

Sonic also came on sms3 I think. My sms2 had Alex Kidd

All through the '90s I played that game to death and every right choice you make against the Janken Henchmen (as well as Janken the Great) has been ingrained into my memory as well as the code for the very last room. If the Nerd reviewed this game, he'd be pissed because it has bats as well as enemies and projectiles moving in sine waves-two of his pet peeves.

Nice to see you guys cover a game that was a huge part of my childhood. It was built into my SMS II, which came with Sonic the Hedgehog as an additional cartridge game. Here in the UK the Master System dominated the NES (at least amongst my friends). Also, just to say, the buttons are swapped around in the version we got (with Alex eating a hamburger in between levels) Do more SMS games please!

My MS had Hang On & Safari Hunt (same as Duck Hunt) built in as mine also came with the Light Phaser. There was also a secret game called Snail Maze. You access it by having no cartridge in & then pressing Up on D Pad and both button together when the Sega Master System logo appear when you turn it on. Don't know if yours does? Ive still got mine now. I can only get to the Jungle level on Alex Kidd. This game is so hard!

if you kill one of the octopus, there is a secret entrance in one of those pots, which will lead you to a further stage. The box with the interogation mark is a box wich contains mini alex kidds which will pop out and ran into the enemy who are in the way, use it with the blue enemy at the end of the jungle phase to make it a lot easier. However, in the castles you need to search a stone tablet to get a code for the final stage and get the crown whitout those damn ghost popping out.... I beat Alex kidd 25 years ago and find it a very great game. I was 7 years old or so...

I'm doubtful about how can a 7 years old kid can beat this. I have tried it around that age and I was far away from the last level. How it's supposed a kid - that doesn't speak english - to manage it? and what about knowing the meaning of the stones without any external information? and all this without the continue mode!
@fuinharlz7 жыл бұрын
Not hard. I was arround that age when I got my master system with alex kid in memory, and I bet it. But, I had the help of a magazine on my country that had game guides (much like nintendo power, but they were focused on all games console instead of just nintendo). Alex Kid is not a HARD game, just takes patience and perseverance :P

If you punch the octopuses tentacle, you could find a warp in the bottle...
