I used to own this game!! I loved playing this as a kid! Dad would take me to a pawn shop on birthdays, and I'd trade my old Nintendo games for new ones. Very weird game, but rewarding and fun once you get into it. The music will be stuck in your head for years. Thanks James and Mike for uploading this.

G&G Was good, it was just hard as shit. It was like the Dark Souls 1 of the NES age. It's an easy game but it's so cheap it's hard.
@JennyTheNerdBat
@JennyTheNerdBat 8 жыл бұрын
+GiantBatGaming not even close, really. Dark Souls is an extremely punishing game, but it's never cheap - it gives you everything to beat the game, and then kicks your ass for your own shortcomings, like not being careful, not fighting well, neglecting your equipment, etc. G&G, on the other side, is hard because of poor controls, overpowered enemies and some obstacles that require pure luck to proceed, which is cheap and unbalanced as hell.
@bubba200874426

Don't mislead anyone. There are many cheap deaths in Dark Souls.
@JennyTheNerdBat
@JennyTheNerdBat 8 жыл бұрын
bubba200874426 For example? I can't remember any death in Dark Souls that couldn't be avoided by having some skill. You'll probably have to memorize some things (like in any hard game), but enemies are never too overpowered to beat, and levels are never hard because of poor design.

It never occurred to me that James was that way about games, but it totally makes sense. His love for the monsters and the occult would naturally have him gravitate more toward games like Castlevania and Ghosts and Goblins. But if he really never was interested in "kiddie" games, he shouldn't have enjoyed stuff like Super Mario World--yet he did. Because it's a damn good game. This explains why he rarely mentions such Capcom gems as Rescue Rangers and Little Nemo: The Dream Master. He missed out on some really amazing games.

Patrick Shields Mike absolutely loves Disney. Not just the classic animation, but he's a MASSIVE fan of Carl Barks, the Disney comic book artist who inspired the cartoon Ducktales, created the character of Scrooge McDuck back in the 40s, and is arguably the greatest Disney comic artist of all time. I think Mike owns almost all of his work in original editions. James may not dislike Disney, but he's definitely more into horror games. Which is a shame, since the NES had a LOT more great cartoony games than it did horror titles.

The evil wizard Malkill is the final boss in this game. He's the villain in Ironsword too. Not sure about Wizards and Warriors 3 though.

Leave it to RARE. They reverse engineered the NES and were the dev masters. Made better games than nintendo themselves.

Imagine if Anita Sarkeesian had gotten a hold of this game. You collect multiple damsels in distress who who have exactly zero plot relevance, and who award points. You finally rescue "the princess", who doesn't even have a name, and is never even mentioned in the instruction book. She is, however, worth lots of points.

Those boots of force are good to have through the whole game. If you go up to a treasure chest that is closed you can hit select to open it without the key. Also the skulls that shoot things out of their eyes, you can hit select and kill those too.

Easy way to deal with the wizard at the end. Get to the top of the stage with the feather. Float down while holding right. You will fall through the wall and land on the platform above the door. Now just face left and keep swing your sword and throwing out the projectile. He can only hit you from the platform you're on, and you will keep destroying his fireballs, so you can beat him virtually unscathed.

James, the boot is used to kick treasures boxes open without needing the keys, but isn't permanent and can be replaced by certain items until you find it again. If I remember correctly, the staff was the best sub item in the game and completely destroys all the bosses.

Okay, the sword animation is awesome, the knight is sorta just flailing it around like a maniac. Then when he dies, he kicks his feet and waves his arms like a taser victim, then after his body goes still, one of his feet keeps twitching. That knight has some seriously intense nervous system responses. It looks awesome. It's like he's acting in a play for a huge audience, and he has to exaggerate all his motions so that the back rows can see.

The bouts of force are extremely powerful. To beat the wizard, it is best to go on the angled terrain near the teal door and use the potion of levitation to stop his attacks. When the wizard appears closest to you, spam boots of force with your sword and triple ax and you can drop the Wizards health very fast. Of course he can heal.

It annoys me that they didn't conjugate 'have' correctly for old English. It should be 'thou hast,' not 'thou hath.' 'Hath' is for 3rd person singular.

Not quite. 'Hath' is only used with 'thou,' which was the second person familiar. So, 'thou hast done it,' vs. 'You have done it,' vs. 'He has done it.' Similarly, verbs took the ending 'st' with 'thou.' Such as 'Thou goest.' At least I think I am remembering this correctly!

I loved this game. I beat it when I was like 8 or so when it came out. You can use the boots of force to open locked chests without a key and to knock things over/off the map like beehives and those skulls that shoot projectiles at you. The staff of power is the best secondary weapon, since it does two damage a hit.

Uh Mike, back in the Nes/LJN days, Rare was a garbage developer, and had a long list of garbage games, most of which were hated. (One example was Beetlejuice, made by Rare, published by LJN. Both also did Nightmare On Elm street.) No one gave a shit about this developer until they changed and started making decent games on the Snes and N64, now under the guidance of Nintendo as a publisher. This is when they became famous, and everyone quickly ignored or forgot about the trash they made in the past. Sadly, this would not last either, because after that, they were bought out by Microsoft, and started making shitty games again, now exclusive to Xbox or Kinect. They lost the rights to most franchises they made games for under Nintendo, except Perfect Dark and Banjo, which got crappy newer games on the Xbox. After these games flopped, the franchises were simply abandoned. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_developed_by_Rare
