Mike is a great friend. James gets frustrated, and looks like he wants to give up a couple of times, Mike keeps encouraging him to not to feel like he can't do it and believed he could do it. And look what happened. Great job James, and great job Mike for helping James have the confidence he needed with this.

I've made it to stage 11 of battletoads, never passed it once, even with game genie infinite lives. Then blood borne I jumped into it trying a no level run average stats character, and I got torn up badly, and what gets me for that is the loading time and my impatience gets me killed, so I stopped playing. May try it again soon enough tho.

I believe I can tell you exactly what you were doing wrong, if you're interested. Every time you died, I could identify one of three reasons for it: 1- You pushed down on the d-pad. Mike mentioned pushing up, but pushing down can be just as deadly (if not more so), as it's actually possible to go out of bounds during jumps -- so you were literally landing on the rocks below the platform, rather than on the platform itself. 2- You didn't QUITE land on the platform. Several of the times you died, you wound up JUST SHY of the platform -- another millimeter to the right and you would've landed successfully. The platforms aren't as large as they look, especially as you approach the top of them -- what looks like perspective is actually treated as physical design, so the platforms are longer on the bottom than they are on the top. Therefore, the closer to the top you are, the less area you have to land on (and jump from). 3- Your jump didn't register. This is similar to point 2 -- if you press the jump button a split second too late (i.e. after you've already officially ridden off the edge of the platform), then as far as the game is concerned, you just plain didn't jump at all. You seemed to think you did a few times, but I believe that was just you steering up, as opposed to actually rising in the air. The key to passing that part of the Turbo Tunnel is paying careful attention to your shadow -- if you don't see your shadow when you "land" on the platform, that means either you were too far to the left or too far down, thus not actually landing on the platform at all. Additionally, you need to make sure that when you land, you leave yourself enough space to jump again before the platform auto-scrolls off the screen. If you don't, you'll just ride right off the edge and die no matter what -- there's no recovery from that.

Oh my God, he did it! James did it! He never gave up! Now THAT is what I call an awesome, pulse-pounding video right there! Just as good as any Angry Video Game Nerd episode, in my opinion. Watching Mike train James, and watching James slowly and surely improve, and then COMPLETE the part that was giving him trouble, and THEN to actually beat the level itself...wow. That was so awesome to watch. My heart was in my chest the whole time!
@Kodaishinigami
@Kodaishinigami 9 жыл бұрын
Poor James. I've never seem him look so discouraged while playing a game. At least he beat it in the end, though. The thing about the part that he was always getting screwed on is that the way the platforms look, where the lower parts appear wider and the higher parts appear smaller, is actually accurate to how they are. If you're high up, you're more likely to miss the platform because your landing room is smaller. James kept accidentally doing that to himself because he kept either staying in the middle or unintentionally moving up to where the platform is very narrow. If you move down, your landing room is a lot bigger to the point where you can just jump from platform to platform without having to move at all.

I've been SCREAMING at my computer this whole time... JAMES KEEPS DRIFTING UPWARDS WHERE THERE IS LESS ROOM TO LAND ON. At least I think theres more room on the lower part of the platform. He just keeps pushing up for no apparent reason. I never had a problem with the turbo tunnel as a kid. It was the most fun I had on the NES.
@tetsujin_144
@tetsujin_144 9 жыл бұрын
It's not really about the platforms being narrower at the top - 'cause they're not, it's just perspective. But when you're in the air in Turbo Tunnel you can go "off the rails" - too far to the foreground or background, so you'll actually miss the landing even though your sprite is right on top of the platform.
@randomwanderer311
@randomwanderer311 9 жыл бұрын
Scope-Eye video actually the platforms are narrower on the top and wider at the bottom. At the bottom you have a greater landing zone. You can test this by just walking off the edge, you will always notice that you will fall off quicker on the top than if you are at the bottom.
@zerobyte802
@zerobyte802 9 жыл бұрын
Nikhil Sadalkar Nikjil is right. You have a wider margin for error by going through the manual jumps at the lower edge. The left/right/left/right part is a lot less necessary down there, too. They're having trouble putting it into words - here's how I would explain it: You go right while in the air to "shorten" the jump, and then back left again while you're on the ground to give yourself a little more time for the next jump, and to get back closer to the middle of the screen so you can have more reaction time. Right in air / left on ground / right in air / left on ground (repeat repeat repeat). Lower on screen is easier and requires less precision in the technique.
@mrkraz
@mrkraz 9 жыл бұрын
Scope-Eye video It's supposed to be perspective, but it's not perfect, it is a little narrower near the top (but not as much as it looks like). And no, you can't go 'off the rails' by going up and down, that's bullshit. The main issue is going backward during jumps, that will make you fail almost every time. If you think you've jumped too early, you can save it by going forward, but it shouldn't be necessary. TL;DR: NEVER go backwards mid-jump. It's pretty easy to see James went back every time he fell.
@Selrisitai
@Selrisitai 9 жыл бұрын
It's frustrating to watch because Mike is intuitively going forward to get far enough to land, but then hitting back so that he does not keep going forward until he's off the screen. When James goes through the floor it is because he is not landing far enough forward, but he also failed to move back after successfully landing a jump so he was moving off the screen. Neither, for some reason, could understand this.

Definitely. Every one has already said it but he pulls too far backwards on the jumps. You can't just hit the edges of the platforms, you need to hit them in the middle. Hug the top of the screen, because the platform is narrower, it helps to pinpoint the landing spots. The wider bottom of the platforms are an illusion, you don't have as much room as you think. Anyway the real challenge is both him and Mike doing the turbo tunnel at the same time.

Once you play it enough times, it becomes muscle memory. The hard part is the exclamation mark part, and the walls at the very end that take precise positioning and timing to make sure you don't hit them. I can't tell you have many times I died after that last checkpoint.

Never played it, so I can't say for sure, but to me it looks like the biggest problem was that James kept undershooting the next platform. Actually Issue 25 of Nintendo power did a huge breakdown of Battletoads and showed maps of each level, including the turbo tunnel with step by step images/text to show what to do, although if memory serves the maps didn't show the warps. That was the thing about magazines back in the day, they didn't want to spoil every single thing about the game in one issue. In the issue above they just were helping you beat each level.

people might hate me for this, but the turbo tunnel is not as hard as james makes it sound, it's mostly just memorization. wait until you get to volkmire's inferno then come back and say the turbo tunnel is hard. but even volkmire's isn't that hard. battletoads is mostly memorization, the only really super difficult stages are the final stage and that one with the rat chasing you to the bomb... although i was stuck on the elevator shaft for like forever as a kid and i remember rage quitting there. my point is that battletoads is beatable without using cheat codes or game genie or whatever... although i do believe it's impossible on 2 players mode lol.

I heard its a very tough stage but you are probably right it just deals with memorizing. But you gotta remember what James said, he said that he just can't beat it for the life of him. I remember some games where there are areas I can't beat but my friends can. For him, this was his demon and he couldn't figure it out until now! It was an awesome video! I loved the ending!

I can speed play Sonic 1-3, beat Ninja Gaiden, well all the games with no cheats, Actually no game, even the hardest of Indie games has beaten me like the Turbo Tunnel has. It's special, some can do it rather easily but like the last boss in MK3, some of the best gamers get their ass kicked till they see a friend make it simple and spam just right to beat it. I play games on instinct so this level is hard when just memorizing perfect controls feels wrong.

Everyone has a part in a game that they just can't get past for whatever reason - hard or not. Usually just not getting the mechanics of it. For me, for the longest time, I always died on the dragon in Mega Man 2. It's an easy fight, but it took me forever to break through that barrier. It was a mental thing. I would just always end up getting hit and falling off the tiny platform(s).

I'm with you there on the Turbo Tunnel, & to be honest the final stage isn't even the worst. The worst level is hands down stage 11, the Clinger Winger. There's virtually no room for error throughout the stage. And if that weren't enough, when you do reach the finish line you have to... FIGHT THE ELECTRO SPHERE!!!
@Kodaishinigami
@Kodaishinigami 9 жыл бұрын
Gargoyle Man Clinger Winger is hit or miss for me, personally. Sometimes I beat it in one shot, other times it takes ten tries. The electro sphere thing is easy, though. As long as you keep punching when it's coming at you, it doesn't hit you for some reason.

Battletoads is just one of those things all kids from the 80's need to return to as adults and overcome. We have to be there for each other and give our encouragement and support. "It's just one big shit sandwich, and we've all gotta take a bite". Great work James!

You shouldn't be touching the D-Pad at all while doing the manual jumps. Just press the jump button at the end of the platform. Once you have the rhythm down it should be okay.

You have no idea how happy I was for James when he beat the level. I have had bosses/levels that became personal hells for a long while, and he satisfaction of actually beating them is so overwhelming. And I know that sometimes you get that... instant of clarity where you don't know how, but you're inspired to the point that, sometimes that has taken you dozens of times and failed miserable every time, at that moment, you just rush through the bastard as if it were nothing. And then you give yourself a beer/refreshment because you damn earned that.

I just played this part. You have to land pretty much in the center of each of those small platforms. You DON"T have to rock the dpad back and forth that much. I made it just by timing the jumps just right.

Practically every time you "fall through the platform" and you can't understand why, it's because you undershot the jump; it's probably a lot harder to see while you're playing the game because it's going so fast and there's not really any time to catch a breath, but if you watch where Mike is landing on the platforms and compare it to where you're landing (or not landing, as the case may be) on them it's pretty obvious what's going on. Congratulations on finally passing the stage, I hope Mike is reading these comments so he can pass them onto you and you finally don't feel so in the dark about it.

When I was a kid those jumps gave me trouble as well. Battletoads was a game I beat countless times effortlessly long ago when I was a kid. Just cause I had no other games. But the reason you fell is simply cause you didn't land on the platform. Let me explain. You were mostly in the middle of the platform but when you jumped you would aim to jump on the lower part of the platform which you will not land on, and hence go through, cause your initial position is in the middle. What you need to do is simply stay at the bottom of the screen cause you got more platform area to handle, and reduce your chances of falling. In conclusion, stay on the bottom unless you need to dodge objects or go on a ramp. Other than that, stay on the bottom. You will see a difference.
