The way you described the 3 stages in such simple terms shows how masterful your understanding of the human mind is: I want to take a moment to appreciate you 3 for putting out there so much thoughtful and deep content, that actually adresses the real problems. Thank you! Anyways, at 4:26 - 5:50 you spoke directly to my heart. I am 20 years old and, since 16, my attatchment to instant gratification has halted my potential, both from a professional and self-actualization standpoint. Even though I got accepted in the university I desired and have installed some positive habits over time like meditation, physical exercise and nofap (I'm starting to see a trend associated with this channel ahaha), I still feel at the deepest level unfulfilled. Procrastination, in the form of binge watching videos, livestreams, masturbation and other similar pleasure seeking behaviors, is killing my zest for life and blocking my progress as a human being. So, my question is: what can one do to deal with this type of freudian issues? Where can I start? Can you point me to some useful resources? Thanks in advance, Francisco

16:35 You talk about “Fictional Finalism”, Thank you for that. It put a very good description to an issue I have experienced for quite a while. I find the most difficult part of this psychological journey is the sheer amount of information to integrate. I have had times where I can seamlessly act in accordance “as” my genomic self, followed often by times when things become foggy and disturbing again. I’m guessing you would say this is due to an uninhibited influence of complexes on my psyche. Freudian and Adlerian primarily. Another thing I have learned from you all is that I need to be careful so as not to be overeducated and under-experienced. I often struggle to set theory aside and learn to live relationally. My Priest tells me to live in my heart not in my mind. I have always liked your video on the superiority/inferiority complex. I have always had a superiority complex, but have also always had a very limited ability to act on my potential. So I busied myself with studying and thinking, now I am needing to unlearn that tendency. Entering the Church has done wonders for me in that I now have the ability to relate to a community in a way that I never have before. I still feel hollow, like every moment of free-time I have has to be spent striving for something grandiose. And if I fail to do this my self-esteem plummets. I know this is a consequence of my incorrect thought process, likely infected by complexes (we call them Demons in Orthodox Christianity), but when I find myself captured by them I become blinded and cannot find my way out of their grasp. Considering this, I was wondering what you suggest I do to eliminate this feeling of Fictional Finalism. I’ve always felt the cure must be the process of actualization/individuation but that just takes me away from relating in the real world and causes me a lot of suffering when I am not actively actualizing. So it really does nothing to help the problem. Do I just need to put my pride aside and take on a life of humble acceptance? What if I want to achieve something? Do I just need patience and diligence? Thank you

It's so clear now why I'm such a mess long after an awakening experience, or release, through a tension of the opposites. An experience triggered at Steve's very words in an anima video, to "open yourself up to the unconscious". I also see the value in my relentless deflationary habit with regard to all this. It keeps me honest, and simply won't let me inflate in any way I can actually identify with. I'm compelled to work these things out in the struggles of my daily life and in everyday simple but fulfilling ways. The meaning and profound feelings I experience in that is amazing. Quite right in time. You know, you're right about that "woo-woo thing". I started to become interested in Carl Jung and eventually ended up in some dreamy state of mind, like no connection of reality. A bit dissociation from my body and utterly in my head. And I had constant anxiety and being dreamy in my thoughts just to escape reality. I've never thought prior to this video, that it is necessary to go through the Freudian stage, later through Adler's and Jung is in the end. Never thought about it. Have you read Joseph Campbell’s mask of god volume 1? In the conclusion he talks about 4 drives: 1. Sex / love (Freudian) or kama in the Sanskrit as he puts it. 2. Power / success (from Adler and nietzsche as he says). Artha in Sanskrit. 3. Is there social / virtue. Dharma in Sanskrit (this would be from society and a mix of the other 3). 4. The transcendent. The more jungian approach. I do agree as did jung that you need all of these in play and can’t avoid them. I think what jung was after is what we might now call the humanistic approach, to meet the person where they are honestly and not let them feel alienated because they aren’t ready to face one of these areas they have worked so hard to disassociate from. Thanks for the good work!

If it's more general study and grounding, then Henri Elleberger's 'Discovery of the Unconscious' will ground you in the entire tradition (up until 1970) of depth psychology (or 'dynamic psychiatry', as he refers to it as). Incredible, I've never seen such a birds eye view of these three greats. Any recommendations on where to start reading Freud? Update: I decided the start reading at "The Psychopathology of Everyday Life". It is supposed to be a good introduction to a variety of his thinking. It's 320 pages so not a massive commitment either. Also note their are over 300 editions all with different reviews and it was a nightmare sorting through them. In the end I went with the one published by Penguin with the abstract girl on the cover. I trust the publisher and this version seems the avoid some of the grammar mistakes I found in others.

Hi Tomy Perez, for Freud, depending if you want to read his original works, or modern summaries - I'd say start with Studies on Hysteria (Breuer and Freud) as that's the foundation of modern psychotherapy. Then, you could look at The Psychopathology of Everyday Life and The Interpretation of Dreams. For the end of Freud's career - An Outline of Psychoanalysis. For Adler - The Neurotic Constitution, The Practice and Theory of Individual Psychology and Social Interest, a Challenge to Mankind. For Jung, if you're starting out, Memories Dreams, Reflections, Man and His Symbols, and Dreams. For an overview of the whole field Henri ellenberger's The Discovery of The Unconscious. For the latest in neuroscinece and psychoanalysis, look up the works of Professor Mark Solms,(Google for papers and KZbin videos). Kindest Regards, Steve.

Hi Sutpen, I was personally influenced by R D Laing’s book ‘The Divided Self’ and his ideas about the ‘Schizophrenogenic Mother’ back in the 1970s and 80s. He had some ideas close to Jung about ‘meaning’ in psychotic symptoms, but he was more of a revolutionary psychiatrist than a psychoanalyst though he did train at the Tavistock in London. He was a tragic figure in his personal life. Kindest Regards, Steve.

what books should I start with to get a solid freudian foundation?
@JungToLiveBy4 жыл бұрын
Hi PalmTreePat, , depending on your purpose - I.e do you want to make a serious study or an overview, I’d suggest for a serious study to start with Breuer and Freud’s ‘Studies on Hysteria’. For an overview before you decide then Henri Ellenberger’s ‘The Discovery of The Unconscious’. Kindest Regards,, Steve.

Very insightfull video indeed! I’ve been introduced to Freud lately, by studying his concepts in books. And i must that this really gave me soms insights on the psyche. with biological concepts that seem very understandable for me. Thank u for recommending me Freud. I’am very curious about your opionions on Freud theory (specifically the ID, Ego, Superego). I’ve noticed that the “instinct” seems very similar to the concepts of the ID. And that the ego then has to “rationolize” the object of the instinct of even change it to keep in touch with reality. (I’am very new tot this, so correct me if I’am mistaken) So is this similar to jung’s idea of making the unconscious conscious? I know these are different theory’s, but I feel like these are somewhat similar aswell. Anyways, thank u guys for putting up these videos there are very helpfull.

Hi Napoleon Bonaparte, many thanks for your very interesting and thoughtful comments. There is a lot of overlap which gets blurred by different terms. Freud’s work is being developed by the work of Professor Mark Solms of Neuroscience and Neuropsychoanalysis. Adler and Jung will soon be mapped into the Neuropsychoanalytic framework, and we at IPSA are actively developing this as well as continuing formal study and clinical specialist training in Neuropsychoanalysis. I’d recommend looking up Mark Solms work. Kindest Regards, Steve.

I get the feeling that you’re making things way harder & more complicated than need be. What kind of collective unconsciousness would make awakening or self knowledge so unbelievably complicated and out of reach of 99.99999% of human beings?
@JungToLiveBy2 жыл бұрын
It isn’t, when it comes to working with people in person. It’s the distillation of over 40 years of front line in-depth therapy with thousands of suffering human beings. If you want sound-bites without depth of knowledge and experience then try self-help internet gurus. If you want to actually learn something, then put the effort in, and measure theory reflexively against that hard work, over decades of your own personal development. Better still, work with people who aren’t you, who need not only help, but help from people who have gone deep enough, and far enough, to know that theory and practice are not the same thing.

Am I right if I say Jung's work on Anima/Animus is the least developed and researched? Why should a man have an Animus? Underdeveloped Animus? Why is the Anima the relating function to the unconcious?
@JungToLiveBy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthias G, yes to the first part of your question. The Anima is the 'Relating Function' per se. so it acts both inner and outer. Its neurophysiological ro roots are deep within the Limbic System and its associated 7 Basic Emotional Systems (BES) - 'Instincts'. Likewise with the genome. Kindest Regards, Steve.

I feel like this channel kinda went through this process, from the purely biological to occasionally poking at the more metaphysical-ish side of things. Was this intentional ?

Hi again 161803. Psychotherapy has two parents, medicine and hypnosis (see Henri Ellenberger’s definitive work -The Discovery of The Unconscious - 1970). Psychology is it’s rather inept step-parent. Prof Mark Solms development of Neuropsychoanalysis is bringing Freud back into mainstream neuroscience wherein classical psychoanalysis was born. Adler and Jung will go through the same process with each being updated and at the same time, updating their birth parents. Kindest Regards, Steve.
