I am currently reading Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious. It's a very unsettling book to say the least. It's causing me to question my religious beliefs and my self-concept. I guess I since I'm on the rollercoaster already there's no choice but to stay for the ride. I am anxious to see what comes out of this for me. Jung is not for the faint of heart.

I have started reading this book aswell with the intent not to soly analyze it as a piece of academia but with the intention to actually experience what Jung is referring to. This has taken me into "synchronistic" experiences that are threatening to break the very fabric of my sanity. Those moments of clarity speak out to you, atleast they did to me and they've brought me back to my "soul" so to speak or the "self". I think that's what it is anyway.. It's an energy that feels in one sense like my full potential and in the other like God watching over me. It shines forth my perception with colors and emotions again.. But also with a deep responsiblity to bear and I am still struggling integrating that into reality. The vision is there, the path is there, but something is holding me back.. Something dark and deep.. Something sinister. This book has reassured me that they have all went to that same place.. the mystics refered to like Nicholas Von Flue and Philo Judias along with the alchemists, the existiantialists like Nietchze and Kierkegaard , Doestevisky Solzhenitsyn , The poets like Simonides, and Alghari. I have so much more I want to learn and understand, but I also have a life to live outside of all this. I want to integrate it all but no one but my closes circle will understand the complexity of this.. anyway, goodluck on your path my friend. You are not alone.

Jung is fundamentally wrong. His collective unconscious is false. The archetypes are not intrinsic to the psyche, but an extrinsic ideology, we've been imprinted with. it's like, everybody knows who Batman is. In Europe or America. Not in the jungles of the Amazon! So, the quetzalcoatl in South America and the ibis in Egypt, the peacock in Iran and the virgin mary in France, all share the same archetype, yet they are different.

At the part of the video that talked about completion (2:26) I thought about a passage from the book Mastery of Fate by Christian D Larson, Making The Ideal Real: "The ideal of yourself is you; you are the ideal side of yourself; the actual or external side of yourself is only a partial expression of the ideal or true self. The ideal side of man is the complete side; and the complete side is you. You are not the incomplete side, because if you were there would be no source for anything in your being; not even the incomplete or external side would have a source, and consequently could not exist. Incompleteness cannot come from incompleteness, because an incompleteness is a partial effect of a complete cause. Incompleteness can come only from completeness; therefore, the fact that the personal self is incomplete proves that it comes from a self that is complete; and since you, yourself, cannot be complete and incomplete at the same time, you, yourself, must be the complete self, while the personal self is but a partial expression of the completeness that exists in you. When you see this clearly, you will know that you are already ideal; that is, complete, and in possession of unlimited possibilities; and when you know that you are ideal, you will think of yourself as ideal. You will impress the ideal, and the greater possibilities upon mind, and your thoughts will not only be ideal, but will contain the power of the greater possibilities. This power will be expressed in the personal self, because the power of every thought is expressed in the personal self; consequently, the personal self will become larger, greater and more perfect, constantly making real the ideal." In my opinion, a literal example of the incompleteness-that-comes-from-completeness would be the gametes (egg and sperm)

I need some help dissecting the following Jung statement: "It is a most painful procedure to tear off those veils, but each step forward in psychological development means just that, the tearing off of a new veil. We are like onions with many skins, and we have to peel ourselves again and again in order to get at the real core." Artificial and unfitting personas do seem real to me, and the shedding of them productive. But is there a distinct line between search of the "real core" self and the sculpting/deployment of persona? Can one individuate through positive personas building, or perhaps is it more of small careful extensions and integrations of positive traits that prove more authentic? Ultimately, his reference of the real core is puzzling to me as I'm uncertain as to what exactly he means. If someone is versed into what Mr. Carl was particularly getting at I'd greatly appreciate the assistance.

infinite loop I think what makes the idea of the “real core” so hard for us to grasp is the fact that very, very few people ever get to uncover it, or as mentioned in the video, so many of us never even become aware we have a “world within”. As he notes, getting to or real core “is a most painful procedure”. The line between searching for that authentic core and the sculpting of the persona is distinct and at complete separate ends of the spectrum. The development of the facade that we wear is for survival.. for us to be able to get by in the world, in the society around us, which is governed by whatever social norms we happen to find ourselves entrenched in. So the idea of trying to find our way to our core through positive persona building goes against the idea of the statement... What is “positive”? If we’re trying to be selective in how we develop the persona, what guidelines are we adhering to? The persona we develop will always be governed by whatever it is we perceive as necessary to be as successful a persona as possible in the world. In the same way.. what is “authentic”? If we take it as fact that most of us start developing our persona from a time before we can remember (which is what Jung implies), then most of us, at least, have no reference point to go off when considering what “authentic” means in relation to our core. We’ve never experienced it before, or have only experienced slivers, perhaps... and even then we weren’t aware of it! The process can only be achieved through abandonment of everything that makes up our persona, bit by bit.. and that really is fucking painful. So many aspects of our conditioning or persona-building are so heavily ingrained that we just aren’t aware of them. Think of a child that takes a toy from another child and is reprimanded for it. The kid will kick and scream and rebel and over time will adopt a behaviour that adheres to what’s expected of him in the world, while at the same time losing touch with an element of his core which may have compelled him to want to take the toy in the first place. Who knows what that aspect of his psyche would have been? But him taking a toy definitely isn’t seen as “positive”, but in so conditioning him he moves further away from his psyche’s true expression. I feel that is a terrible example, sorry, and may miss the mark altogether.. but what I’m trying to say is some things are so heavily rooted. For instance, how difficult is it for men to separate themselves from the commonly held idea of what it is to be a man? That shit runs deep and ultimately only obscures us from ourselves. As to how we do search for our real core... well, I’m just as clueless as the next person, haha. I know there are an unfathomable amount of layers for me to peel away yet, but I’ve discarded quite a few already and that’s been rough af... the toughest journey I’ve ever been on. It’s like at the midway point of the video he mentions people’s individuation processes can develop in a way that’s “unconducive to mental health”. The other reason it’s so hard to imagine the nature of our real core is because it’s not definable... as mentioned, there can only be an interpretation. Each person’s realized core is as unique as their fingerprint. Much in the same way Buddha doesn’t actually define what enlightenment is... it’s simply “the end of suffering”. What does the “end of suffering” look and feel like? You can’t know until you actually reach it, and that’s the point. Sorry to babble on. Think your question acted as a prompt for me to process things I need to process. Would love to hear others’ insights too. I’m only at the very beginning of diving into Jung.. it’s so daunting.

Jung's Liber Novus was an elegant and subtle way of describing his own deep dive into unconscious, delivered as a fascinating artistic book. He is very similar to Robert Anton Wilson in that way, where RAW described his experiments in his Cosmic Trigger I book, (and called it ceremonial ritual magic), Jung called the same techniques Active imagination that was triggered through Depth Psychology. But they all are a modern continuation of the shamanistic traditions like found in Eleusinian Mysteries and Mystery Cults all over the world in general.

How does one possible know when they are killing potential parts of them self that are directly associated with who they are as a character or if they are actually a required part of yourself to die in order to succeed true individuation?

Jim Carrey was made fun of for his own epiphany of individuation, he realized the true meaning of all of this and that he played a role/archetype and got so wrapped in it that he forgot he is linked to and no different than every human being or life form on this earth. He knows himself, and people who are lost will always believe he is insane. Unfortunate outcome. Carl Jung made me very interested in psychology and sociology.

Psyche is meta-physical reality of a person. Archetypes are alphabets, but instead of formation of what is known as "Letter" used to represent certain sound to construct words, archetypes are alphabets of formation of meaning through experience. For example, the formation of jealousy, or anger, or dejavu, or dispair, all of these are a formation learned through experience, and when it enters the mind (psyche) it becomes blocks of alphabet, that allows a man to construct their meta-physical reality. Carl Jung's basic research materials were derived from ancient Sanskrit texts referring many sanskrit terms lyk ATMA, YOGACHARA into western one. I m more than satisfy that our ancient texts are helping the other parts of the world in creating a whope better place for living.

What practical methods in learning attention to individuation one can learn ? Arts, such plastic arts (drawing and others), dramatic arts such theater technics and performances ? there is other more ritualistic linked to day-to-day ? Individuation seemed to me a very abstract notion on getting grasp of concious self process, but too much abstract a concept ... i would need concrete things to work with. Thank you !

The onion isn't a bad analogy to the psyche overall. Though because of the defense mechanisms one usually builds around their unconscious over time I personally liken it to an ant hill. A bee hive may also work but the numerous tunnels, hidden chambers and army of guards in an ant hill seems more fitting an analogy to me. Only thing I can't account for is the queen, unless that would be the ego/ persona. Suppose it makes a certain sense but could be wrong :^P

"Queen" ,to me implies : that which is served. First I thought perhaps morality ? No way. That could involve a collective ( societal ) shadow and what brave soul with a death wish would integrate that ? Ridiculous. I think this is more a function of religion. Then I thought : hmm , how about the self and its myriad components/ sub- personalities , of which persona is but the merest facet ? Damn ! Not quite but getting warmer , ha. So, my own best shot would be -- and I should be kicked for this- The sovereignty of the individual and the intrinsic value of each and every one. I sincerely thank you for your comment.

What I find interestingly misleading is Jung's impression of why most people know little of the world within. I agree on what concerns our Christian heritage and the believe in the "christian" concept of an "omniscient" God, but I find it misleading if it doesn't separate the fact that christian belief is a modification of Judaism ( which Jung never mentions as he always refers to "christianity") There is a huge difference; in Judaism God may be omniscent, but contrary to the Christian "concepts" of God ( protestants have a slightly different approach to catholics in what concern doctrine) the individual plays a dramatic and massive role in individuation through out the Torah or so called "old testament" which Christians replaced with a "new message" with the Gospel.The torah tells us "Abraham was one man" , Isaiah 51:2, a man called to leave his family and find his own destiny and this is perpetuated through the Torah, with Joseph, Moses, and so forth. Christianity changed the game when they "created" a short cut to the inner journey by creating a doctrine that promises salvation based on one's acceptance of Jesus alone. The doctrine eliminates the individual's call as a "personal destiny", or personal journey, by pretending that the individual finds sanctuary in the church, through confession and communion, the church in that sense becoming the new state that denies the individual. While people congregate in churches promoting their lack of individuality, they do not need to question themselves about a world within, because Jesus has already " paid" the dues of their journey if any. However, the Ominiscent God is not the problem, as Jung claims, but the problem dwells in the lack of intimate relation with the "god -within" found through the call of the individual and as it is poetically stated through the Jewish doctrine.

Interesting. I read somewhere that in the later satges of his life, Jung became increasingly interested by kabbalistic symbols. He just never delved into judaism as much because he didn't know hebrew, but he knew latin and greek... If you google: Jung and the kabbalah, you will find a long essay given to the american psychological association by sanford L grob. I think it will be of interest to you!

In the Undiscovered Self Jung seems more concerned with individuation being subverted by an incomplete identity of Statistical Rational chunking. It's important for creative people to integrate the rational part of their identity and use 0bejctive tools but the push of an idealistic conception of being is very concerning.

Very well said. I think it is just a product of their times.. Jordan Peterson with his modern day leanings and calling himself a Christian, is a real fish out of water even though he is only highlighting many ideas in the past, refreshing to see anyway.. I prefer more uplifting kinds of psychological thinking (positive, humanist or existential psychology) and what I realise with that is I'm looking for something spiritual, but religion doesn't cut it for me, religion may be an opiate for the masses in good and bad, but honestly it is akin to holding back the tide with a broom. Imagine that Christianity or Islam conquered the world, everyone unified under the same belief structure, peace on Earth etc. How long would it take for some new form of sectarianism to begin? I imagine it would begin on the first day of said peace, even before it. Such is the war between individuation and collectivism, on and on it goes.. The biggest threat to God's children, is each other.. Or so we think. But even if I didn't think, well that is no guarantee the man next to me isn't plotting me or someone else's downfall, so do I do nothing, or pray? lol..

I suggest you may be confusing what the church calls ‘sins’ with the unconscious bits of the psyche. Not at all the same. Jung nowhere starts from original sin. We are all human with it’s weaknesses. Jungian analysis is done alone with the analyst. No Christian church- (apart from the Gnostics) supports individual work on The Self. So you either go for a load of laid down laws Or you bravely take your lone journey which is unique to you. That doesn’t mean you let the ego run rampant. Church doctrine controls the ego. Jungian analysis encourages the freedom to discover the whole Psyche- even the broken off but called The Shadow. ‘Sin’ in the original Aramaic language that Jesus spoke, simply meant ‘to miss the mark’ The connotations of guilt were added by Judaism and Christianity.

So: 'Greater personality'; 'Darkness'; 'Scope and Insight'; 'Being above'; 'Real core'. These are the jungean definitions of individuation, but basically there is no definition, excluding Aniela Jaffé's - an interpretation. This so called process is rather undefined, and the 'core' of personality means pretty much whatever you feel like having for supper. Is there any real definition in this study, or in this matter, or are we merely applying astrology's methodology of allusion and intuitive thinking?
